Hi {!firstname_fix}

The guy who took that picture up there lives here in New Mexico. I asked him if he might be willing to take some photos of the DesMaisons dogs. I figured he would do a whole lot better than I since he is an expert on wildlife.

Hehheh, so of course the dogs were wild, incorrigible, rowdy and obnoxious. Then we had a huge dust storm and mighty winds. And you can well imagine that no professional photographer in his right mind would take out his good camera in the face of grit like that.

Today, the three bad dogs went out with me alone. The walked and pranced like the well trained dogs on the Dog Whisperer. They did not even think of fence fighting or crashing after the local peacocks. They just laughed and laughed as the mountain turned mauve.

I am holding off on starting any classes this week. I am recuperating from the dopamine class (it was awesome), enjoying serotonin and catching up on the regulars. Check the changes in the schedule to see how we are moving things around to accommodate recovery. (smile) Please take note that I will be gone the week of the 17th - I am going back up to MN for a week at White Earth. Things are rocking and they are having a lot of fun. The staff is doing the food, and the clients are adapting. I think they don't know quite what hit them in treatment. For those of you who have been watching the gloom and doom of national news and the methamphetamine epidemic, I have something to say. Never, ever underestimate the power of this program. I have no doubt whatsoever that shake, fish oil, protein, browns, veggies and the potato actually restructure the brain. We are not just playing around with some cute ideas here. This is about rewiring damaged brains. And I KNOW we are onto something. That dopamine class was just the beginning of the emerging data.

So, no fear. You are creating the antidote by living into your recovery.

Please click here to see the new schedule of classes.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. The classes are done online with one lesson each day. You do not have to be at your computer at any set time.

Please note that we have added the classes to the new schedule so you can see what is coming up. And go read the questions and answers before you write to me. The classes are done online with one lesson each day. You do not have to be at your computer at any set time. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Please feel free to pass this week's newsletter on to your friends and family. Don't forget to let me know what you like and would like to see me cover.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery® website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

** Testimonial for the Week**

As I thought when I first started the program, the idea of a life without sugar was inconceivable. And as everyone reported, I got to step 7 and it not only seemed possible, but absolutely what I wanted.

For my children, when they started, I also thought getting to step 6 would be impossible. But again I was wrong! They had been doing all the steps since January except 2 and 6 before I read LSA and began adding snacks and getting them to see the difference. I really think they see the importance now. I talk with my youngest about how she has not had any problems with her asthma in the last few months and that this is prime allery season.

They have been eating only fruits with meals and no sugar for the past 2 weeks. I have been dreading Easter coming up and was wondering how MY ideas would go over with them.

The most amazing thing has happened (and I think they will actually be able to follow through). Both of my girls have agreed that they can collect the eggs at school, but at the party have agreed to me talking with their teacher about them having fruit, water, and their regular peanut butter/ryvita snacks that they have after school. I think the biggest motivator (besides talking about how they would feel bad or the asthma might act up if they ate all that candy) was that I am going buy back their eggs. We agreed upon what they think is a large sum of money and they are so excited about the groovy girl clothes they can buy with this.

Anyway, wanted to share and thank you for your support. Happy Trails!

Karen

**Recipe of the Week**

I love broccoli! Here is a yummy recipe that is sure to win over your family to eating greens. I adapted this from a real simple magazine recipe.

BROCCOLI WITH GARLIC LEMON CRUMBS

  • 2 slices Ezekiel bread (or any whole grain bread of your choosing) or you can substitute with 3 slices of Ryvita
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 lemon
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 large bunch broccoli, cut into florets
Grate the zest from the lemon and then cut the lemon in half, squeezing the juice from half the lemon and putting it aside. Put the bread in a food processor or blender to make bread crumbs. Heat the oil in a small skillet. Add the bread crumbs and sauté over medium heat until toasted. Add the crushed garlic and the lemon juice into the pan. Add the salt and cook, stirring constantly, until dry. Place the florets on a microwave-safe plate and sprinkle with a few tablesp! oons of water. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave 3 to 5 minutes or until crisp-tender. Remove and sprinkle with the Garlic Lemon Crumbs.

**Your Last Diet: More Than What You Think**

For those of you who were not at last week?s YLD chat, I want you to read it. It was so moving, I want all of you who struggle with journaling to read it. I have asked Gretel to post it in a place that everyone can get to. Click here to read it.

This is what we do in YLD. We are talking in dialogue about what the program means. We can do all sorts of talking here about weight loss and all that stuff. But the heart of it is my personal attention to what folks need. If you want to be right out on the cutting edge, come on over.

I thought it was about weight loss when we started. And I was wrong. It is about writing a new story together.

If you are not a YLD member, come and join us. Click here if you are ready to change your life or just plain ole have fun. It is not too late to get into the classes if you come right now.

**David's Corner **

My Hoof Alive arrived in the mail today. It is very thick, smooth, and buttery. Kind of looks life lemon curd. I have used it several times today, and I have been very pleased with the texture and consistency when I rub it between my fingers and into my cuticles. It seems to absorb into my skin well while also leaving a thin, protective, but not greasy, coating on the skin's surface. Furthermore, the scent is very subtle and not offensive unlike some creams I have used. Leah
And here is an insider tip as well. Kathleen has been putting this stuff on the dogs’ nails. I said, *Whatever are you doing!* She said, *It keeps them from cracking.* I thought she was nuts, but you know what, I just went and looked at a paw and nails. Hmm...that is interesting. You gotta try this stuff. Put it on your toes for summer, LOL.
One other thing. Lots of people are calling me and telling me how much they love the cookbook. If you are planning for Easter or Passover and want guides for program-friendly meals, get the cookbook. I use it all the time. And I know Kathleen does as well. She was writing up guidelines for the workbook for Minnesota, and I saw her using the cookbook info to do that. It is a great resource.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

**Making Good Choices With Food **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

Today's article is for those of you who are just getting started with the program. You may not know quite where to go or what to do. This is a simple getting started guide.

Your new food plan will be shifting towards eating healthy foods including:
Proteins
Complex Carbohydrates (browns)
Veggies
The first task is to learn about proteins. You will be having proteins at every meal, so it really helps to know what you love and what is easy for you.

Eggs

Birds

Chicken, turkey, game hens, ostrich, pheasant, duck, goose

Fish

White fish, crab, lobster, clams, tuna, swordfish, cod, salmon, mackerel, trout and many others

Meats:

Beef, pork, veal, lamb, venison, buffalo, rabbit, goat

Dairy

Milk, cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese

Beans/Grains/Nuts/Seeds

Tofu, tempeh, lentils, kidney beans, all other beans; quinoa, amaranth, millet, other grains; peanut butter, almond butter, any other nut butters

How much protein should you have?

As you master getting some protein into every breakfast, you can begin to look at how much you actually need for your body. First, find out how much you weigh. Take that number and divide it in half. This is the number of grams of protein that you need each day.

Then, divide this number by 3 to see how many grams of protein to eat at each meal.

If you weigh 150 pounds, you need about 75 grams of protein in a day and 25 grams at breakfast.

If you weigh more than 250, just plan for 42 grams of protein for breakfast. You do not keep adding more if you weigh more than 250 because most of your body is fat rather than muscle.

Let’s work out how much protein you need for breakfast. If you are not good at math, don’t get scared. You can do this with the group.

My weight = ___________

Half my weight = ______________

This equals the grams of protein I need every day.

One third of the total grams for the day= __________This is what I need at each meal.

I need _________ grams of protein for breakfast.

Here is a chart that shows you how much of a food you would have to eat if you just eat one food. It is kinda scary. But you will see that some proteins give you more nourishment. One hamburger gives you as much as 5 hot dogs. So we call ground meat a dense protein. The numbers show you why something like bologna really can’t help your brain heal.
