Hi {!firstname_fix}

Well I think everything has settled down and we are all settled back in. I always love this time of year. Cooler nights and crisp mornings. I am waiting for the Sand Hill Cranes to start their migration sounds. We listen for the sounds of them passing overhead as they travel down along the river.

I went to the State Fair last weekend. I love the State Fair. I look at the cows and pigs and chickens and ducks and then I go in the building with the guys who have microphone headsets and are chopping things. Vitamixers and ring cleaners are everywhere. The young guy with the shoe cleaner caught me and scrubbed my New Balance shoes. I felt sorry for him sitting there cleaning shoes for 3 weeks, so you know I bought some. Ever more fun was finding program-friendly food at the fair! I did NOT go on that basket set on a bungee cord. I had to look away. Anyway, it sure was fun.

We will be starting these new classes this week beginning 10/4:

Brain Chemistry 101 is your basic information on brain neurotransmitters. If you want to make a little more sense of why you are the way your are, come take this class. I am going to make it a little easier and a little more exciting this round. So even if you have already taken it, you might consider coming back for a tune up.

Brain Chemistry: Beta Endorphin - Week 1 is our old stand by. We LOVE this class. It is the essence of sugar sensitivity. Come find out why you feel so inadequate even though you are smart, attractive and skilled. Come find out how you can heal this part of your story.

Using Community Resources is our free guided tour. Get on the bus and listen to the best tour guide around. Learn your away around the website. This class is a MUST for new people.

And we will begin these classes the week of 10/ll:

YLD Weightlossemotions is the class for those of you who are ready, are on step seven and want to clear out a little of the being fat baggage. You don’t need therapy, a two week class will give you wonderful, wonderful tools to get you on your way.

YLD Stubbornweightloss is a tutorial for the stuck. If you want to be in the class, we will have a personal interview and you will convince me that your weight just won’t come off. We can find a plan and solution for EVERYONE.

Resource Center Tour is the second of our free tours. Come see what is in the resource center.

Step 6: Going off Sugar is a class for those of you getting ready to detox or having detoxed and wondering why it is so hard after. We talk about *the flat*.

I have posted a new class schedule on line. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. The classes are done online with one lesson each day. You do not have to be at your computer at any set time.

And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Please feel free to pass this week's newsletter on to your friends and family. Don't forget to let me know what you like and would like to see me cover.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery® website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

You don't have to do years of therapy to get results. You can start changing what you eat and see the effects very quickly.

** Testimonial for the Week**

I love running in the rain, Pat. You're right -- it is refreshing.

As for BE raisers, some of my favorites are:
  • Reading a magazine
  • Interacting with my cat, Oscar (that is, when he's not in a mood to attack me -- that can be a BE spiker instead!)
  • Working crossword puzzles and cryptograms
  • Meeting up with friends to chat
  • Talking to or being with my mother
  • Planning anything (I love to plan, organize, make lists -- it's the action part I have trouble with sometimes)
  • Listening to music
  • Getting a massage
  • Playing my piano (something I don't do nearly enough)
  • Browsing in a store like Pier 1 or some other similar store
  • Browsing in a bookstore (just entering a bookstore is a BE raiser for me)
  • Being with my friend Stephanie's 5-year-old daughter Emily
  • Hearing about what my three nephews are doing (or being with them, but they live in MD and I live in FL)
  • Watching a TV show that really makes me laugh
  • Going to see a movie in the theater
  • Rainy days (I know, that's weird, but I've always loved rainy days more than sunny ones -- I definitely do not have SAD)
  • Seeing a rainbow (I saw one just the other day)
  • Stretching or yoga
  • Relaxing in my home when it's clean
  • Burning candles
Well, that's quite a few! Thanks for making me think about this. I just realized that I don't do many of these nearly enough, and most of them don't cost anything or cost very little.

Amy

**Recipe of the Week**

SPICY CHICKEN WRAPS

  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 2 tsp vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 1/2 pounds skinned, boned chicken breast, cut into 1/2-inch strips
  • 1/2 c sour cream (or if you keep kosher sour supreme-tofu pareve sour cream)*
  • 1/4 c mayonnaise
  • 2 T minced fresh parsley
  • 2 T fresh lime juice
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 4 (8-inch) whole wheat, corn or brown rice tortillas
  • 3 c chopped romaine lettuce
  • 1 1/3 c chopped seeded tomato
  • 2 jalapeno peppers, seeded and diced (optional)
Combine the first 4 ingredients in a heavy-duty zip-top plastic bag. Add chicken; seal and shake to coat. Remove chicken from bag. Combine the sour cream and next 5 ingredients (sour cream through garlic) in a small bowl, and stir well with a whisk.

Place a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Add chicken, and sauté 2 minutes or until chicken is done. Add the sour cream mixture; cover and cook 1 minute. Remove from heat.

Warm the tortillas according to the package directions. Spoon about 3/4 cup chicken mixture onto each tortilla, and top each serving with 3/4 cup chopped lettuce and 1/3 cup chopped tomatoes (and 1/2 of a jalapeno pepper, if desired). Roll up wrap.

*you can substitute plain yogurt for the sour cream

**David's Corner **

Here is some information that was recently sent out by CSPI (Center for Science in the Public Interest).

I think you may find it helpful and it will give you a sense of why I was so excited when we found a supplier for tuna fish that is certified to be so low in any heavy metal contaminants. This tuna is awesome. I eat it all the time. Mom eats it regularly for lunch. She eats outside in the garden, Josie puts her head on her knee and drools, Pepper does the *oh please, oh please look* and Ronan wags his tail waiting. They like the tuna too. So if any one asks you whose testimonial you loved most, you can always say Miss Josie said it was yummy.
This is also the reason we get our fish oil from one place. We trust them and we trust their products are heavy metal free. I am sending ProEpa and fish oil out on subscription all the time. I am happy to add your unique order to my data base. We have a new system up and running which allows us to offer you quick phone reorders. Just call me and say *Dave, can you send me some fish oil and some of that Joint Response I give my dog?* and I will be on it. We are making some really neat changes and I will let you know as they develop. Let me know if you like reading these kinds of reports.
Mercury is an environmental pollutant that bioaccumulates in large ocean-dwelling fish, such as swordfish, shark, some types of tuna, and king mackerel. Seafood is the leading cause of exposure to methylmercury, which can cause neurological damage to the developing fetus and young children. Women can easily avoid this risk by steering clear of fish containing high levels of mercury for 12 months before becoming pregnant and while pregnant or breastfeeding.

In 2004, FDA and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a joint advisory on mercury in fish, urging pregnant women, nursing mothers, young children, and those planning to become pregnant not to eat shark, swordfish, king mackerel, or tilefish. But the new survey shows that the advisory has not trickled down to the people who need it the most. In fact, 31 percent of pregnant women, women planning on becoming pregnant, and nursing mothers did not know that seafood with high mercury levels could be harmful.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

**Our Online Groups**

Hi, I'm Gretel, and I'm the volunteer liaison for the radiantrecovery group. I had been sober with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous for 8 years when I found Radiant Recovery 7 years ago. At that time I was suffering severe sugar hangovers that rivaled any I'd ever had from alcohol and was sliding into a depression. I commented one night at a meeting that I might as well go back to my drug of choice, alcohol, if I was going to feel that bad. A wise lady came up to me and suggested I might be interested in Kathleen's book, Potatoes Not Prozac. I read it in one day, felt Kathleen was speaking directly to me, and embraced the program because I intuitively knew it would add a whole new dimension to my recovery. The radiantrecovery list was set up as a support for people who have already given up alcohol and/or drugs or who would like to in connection with the Radiant Recovery program. We are a very warm, compassionate and caring group who have known the depths of despair that addiction brings. We are grateful for the understanding Kathleen has provided us, that our addiction is biochemically based, and for the nutritional solution she offers to help us in our recovery. We would love to have you join us.

**Following the Rules**
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

Hi folks, you know I sent out a letter asking for your input. One interesting thing came up. I got some inquiries from folks who said they have been doing everything *perfectly* and were disenchanted with the program because they hadn't lost weight. So I want to talk about this.

Sometimes I get a sense of people following the rules and doing it perfectly. Everything. But it doesn't include the listening to your body, the mucking around that makes the program become your own. You see there isn't a *perfectly* in this program. There is simply a committed, not a perfect way.

Committed means you show up when you are discouraged. You show up when you are still fat and you think you have tried everything. Your show up with a beginner's mind and you say, what does my body say here? What needs to change? What have I tried? Why did it work for a while? What changed?

Committed means you ask the people you trust to help you see things you can't because you are in the middle of it. This is a big one. SS people are not team players. We think we know better. We know how to beat the diets. We ask for *advice*. But not for counsel. And then we ignore it.

Or we fail to ask the ultimate authority - our own body. We say, *Still fat!!! You slug....* and go off and do Atkins. I can't tell you how many letters I have gotten about knowing that Atkins will work and then I will be back.

So what *is* this program anyway? It is accepting on faith something that is so radical, so different from anything we have ever done. Trusting the voices of those who have done it longer. Not done it perfectly, not finished, not all fixed, but those who have hung in there, who are open and willing and are connected. Those who give back. Those who have learned that the heart of the program comes in service. Sitting with one more frightened tired newbie in despair. Or sitting with an old timer who crashed and burned and wants to bail with every molecule of who she is. Or being patient with the one in the middle who is bored and disenchanted.

Rules don't work for that. Heart does. Honesty and tenacity does.

Now here is the bottom line. For some folks the losing weight part is easy. It comes, it works and life is changed. For others, it is a bear. You will go through everything I have written and found you are not losing weight. And then, you decide whether you pitch it because *it* doesn't work or you stay in there as we find out. We don't have all the answers by a long shot. We are living the solutions. And the edge of our story is pushed out by those of you who are stubborn losers way more than by the success stories.

I don't know if this is making sense. Maybe I am just moved by all those letters you wrote me. But what I CAN tell you - Kathleen is in for the long haul. There are some things I do not know, actually LOTS of things I have not a clue about. I don't know why some of you get stuck. It may be that you haven't done the package, it may be that this package is not the one for your body. It may be that your leptin is inadequate or your delta 5 desaturase in under active. But I do know, if you stick with it, you will be able to hang in there and keep plugging away and having fun along the way.

I am going to. So I hope you don't follow the rules, but you find the program.
