August 30, 2010

Hi {!firstname_fix}

I am home from Maine and had a fabulous time sitting and watching the tide come in and out of the cove. Two sea gulls had adopted my sister-in-law and told all the other birds that her deck was theirs. The most fascinating thing was when a little juvenile showed up on the grass. He was peeping a little baby cry, the mother went down and fed him from her beak and then asked Danielle to send some food for him. The she taught him how to eat regular food. I learned a lot about sea gulls. Ate lobster, went out on my cousin's boat for a picnic and just relaxed. It was lovely.

Now we are back, looking to autumn. It is just a really nice time here in New Mexico.

** Testimonial of the Week **

(Read from the bottom up.)

Ha! I think this all the time em, it is mind blowing. ALL those problems, just because of the food! No wonder people think I'm crazy about my food. If only they knew.

Maria

I am still blown over by the fact that browns, proteins, and veggies are all I really need to feel pretty balanced. Blown over. F*in food. I would have never thought it.

Em

Gretel, I just love it when you are able to take the time to share. You have a clear, powerful voice that has helped guide me for many years now.

Yesterday evening I had had a grueling day so far, and when I got home to an empty house -- DP is gone right now -- with 4 animals crying to be fed and me about to fall off the edge (blood sugar-wise) as well, I had a serious case of the "F--- its" for about five minutes. But you know what, this exact same phrase came to me in that moment: doing the food, doing recovery, IS the easier, softer way. Sitting down and doing nothing and not feeding myself is the harder way. Not going to meetings and not praying and trying to muscle through it by myself is the harder way. No matter what it seemed like at that moment.

And like you, I know that I need to be connected to people who can remind me of that simple truth when I am too tired, too distracted, too discouraged to remember on my own.

Thank you, Gretel.

Love,
Elaine in CO

I depend on you to remind me it is not worth it, doing the food is the easier, softer way.

Gretel

** Radiant Ambassadors **

Hmmmm. Magazine and newspaper publicity. How to get it. That is the question!

Kat recently attended a phone seminar on this very topic and helpfully gave us a precis of the information on the ambassadors list. It went something like this...

  • start talking to editors and journalists - yep, we're already doing that through looking out for reporter requests on HelpAReporterOut.com

  • email magazines with a comment about your product/service - yep, doing that too!

  • it helps to have real expertise, a unique point of view and a good name for your product or service - LOL - I think Kathleen's already got that one covered!

  • link to articles about Radiant Recovery through twitter or facebook - check, already doing that.

  • word of mouth and networking sites - absolutely doing this (see above. Besides, I'd be more likely to believe a friend who's read Potatoes not Prozac rather than some flashy advertising campaign)

It's funny. We've already figured this all out/stumbled upon it on our own LOL! And discovered plenty more avenues too heh heh :)

Feel free to come on over to the ambassadors list - we'd love to have you join us!

Selena

Come join us if you are excited about spreading the news.

** How I Found Radiant Recovery **

I read an article about sugar addiction in my little sister's teen magazine. It mentioned Kathleen and her books, so I got PNP from the library and recognized myself in almost every word!

** Radiant Kitchen **

Beef Stroganoff
  • 1 1/2 - 2 pounds beef tenderloin or sirloin sliced into strips, about a 1/2" thick and maybe 3" long
  • salt (optional)
  • pepper
  • 1 onion, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup beef broth (I use low sodium, but regular is fine)
  • 1 tsp. good mustard (I can't find a program friendly dijon, so I use a garlic mustard aioli from Trader Joe's)
  • cornstarch to thicken or 2 tbsp. butter mixed with 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 tbsp. butter or oil, or non-stick spray
  • sour cream, about a quarter cup, room temp
Okay, this may sound a little odd.

Get a brown paper bag that you get your groceries in and open it up like when we made book covers. Place the beef, salt, pepper, and onions on it. Toss so that the meat is coated and mixed. Then take and wrap up the bag like a package and leave it at room temp for about 2 hours. Stick it on a plate, because it usually leaks.

In a skillet, either make the roux and add the broth or heat the broth and add cornstarch to thicken. Add mustard and mix, then remove from heat.

In another skillet, brown meat and onions in fat of your choice over moderate high heat, about 10 minutes. Add the browned beef, but not the onions, to the reserved sauce. Set over a moderate heat, cover, and simmer about 15 minutes, stirring as needed.

Remove from heat and stir in sour cream.

***I will tell you, this does not really make a "sauce" if you like a lot of it. I end up making a lot more and adjust measurements accordingly, because my family wants sauce for their noodles. This is more like a coating, if that makes sense.

Enjoy,
PE

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

Our mugs and water bottles have the Radiant Recovery Logo on them. The pictures don't show that yet.

I got a water bottle, and I LOVE it!

My smaller Sigg bottle has never sealed properly, and it also drips when I pour. Not so for the RR bottle -- it seals perfectly and does not drip when pouring.

I also like that there's a small hole in the loop of the cap to thread a small carabiner or something through it.

I bring it to work and smile when I see it on my desk. Helps me to remember Ranch.

Cinzia

I am also using the water bottle and love it! This one has a smaller opening, which is an option that I like.

The mug is so cute that I put it on my kitchen desk, where it is holding pens :) I should have gotten two.

Jeannie

We still have great mugs and bottles and back to school is a terrific time to use them.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

** Our Online Groups **

The Radiant Step 2 list is a source of helpful information and support with journaling. On this list we talk about how to get started with the journal, how to start listening to our body and why giving it a voice is so important. We also discuss how to use the journal for detective work in our program and, of course, how to make journaling fun! Right now the list is rockin' with people supporting each other and making big discoveries with their journal. So whether you are just starting out or are looking for a recharge in your journaling, come on over and join in the fun!

We get set doing all four parts of Breakfast and then comes 'The Journal'.

Many people have kept journals of food intake before to track points or calories. Others have written great long accounts of their feelings, poetry, their making sense of life, the universe. This journal is very different. Here we record what and when we eat, and how the body feels. We are able to discover what our body likes, doesn't like. What makes 'our' body function and feel best. We get to know the dear body who has faithfully carried and served us our life long. And we get to make the best food choices to nurture our body and allow the body to heal.

The journal is a tricky step for a lot of people! (smile) Learning the language that the body uses can be harder than learning Russian without a phrasebook. But if we persevere, the rewards are wonderful. Getting to know 'you,' getting to know 'all' about you is the best, and most lasting love affair you will ever have. On the step 2 list, we talk about how to have the journal work for you and your body. How to manage carrying a journal, being kind to yourself when it seems too hard, and how to understand what it tells you. Come on over and join us to learn to hear your body speak.

**Problem Solving for Sugar-Sensitive Dilemmas **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

People often ask me how they can sort something out. You say, “Kathleen, I just can’t figure out what to do.” Often you are desperate and feel that you have to know NOW.

Well, first of all, the haziness, that sort of fog and cloudy sense of not knowing is often induced by what you are eating, or by when you are eating. Skip a meal and get dumb. Have sugar and whites and get foggy and not be able to make sense of anything. These are the times when you push forward trying to find answers and you feel as if you are pushing into cotton. Nothing comes, even if you wrestle for hours.

The first way out, of course, is doing the steps. I know you thought that doing the food would just deal with cravings and your weight, and maybe mood. But there is a huge payoff...you get clarity as well. The fog lifts. Things make sense. Answers come unbidden without thrashing.

But let’s say you have a problem now. You can’t wait for step 7. You need some practical skills today. So let’s do some of those.

Usually, sugar sensitive people munch – this means you say, "Is it this? Is it that? Is it this? Is it that?" You never find anything, you just fret for hours. The task is to go under what appears to be the question and seek a deep answer. Go under the surface, see what it conceals.

When you start you will often think you are too busy to sit with it. Or if you sit, you just munch so why bother. This is different. You take one issue, and you decide to focus on it. You call a sense of clarity. You basically decide to leave the munch and ask the real question. Let me give you an example.

I recently had a discussion with a friend who is trying to figure out some major life choices. Should she go to graduate school, what if she gets the new job she was interviewed for, should she stay with the old job, what if she has to move, how will she have enough money? Sound familiar? So I suggested this technique of going under the munching. I asked her what she wanted in her life in 5 years. I asked her to sit with that in stillness for maybe 30 minutes and let all the “stuff” quiet. This is going under the surface. Not the munching, but the real question.

She did. And she discovered that she really, really wants to be an art therapist. You might imagine that all the munching faded away. Once she was clear, the choices were clear. She didn’t have to wait for step 7. And she realized that she had been munching for weeks and had never stopped to ask what was underneath.

Once she was clear, she focused her energy and in 3 days, all those issues were settled. Concentrated focus is a mighty tool but we rarely use it. We dissipate it with sugar or munching. This is a learned skill. We will talk more about it as we go. Practice the first piece.

Warmly, Kathleen
