September 13, 2010

Hi {!firstname_fix}

I have used an update from Mosaic as our article this week. I think you will love it. I also wanted to update you on a change we made with our step 7 list. As we have thought about step 7 over this last year, we have realized that step 7 is really about *getting a life* or being in the world with your recovery. We learned that having a step 7 list meant it was seen as a destination rather than an access point for the getting a life process. It just did not have the vibrancy and vitality we anticipated. So we are trying an experiment. We have taken that list down for a bit and asked people to find their place in the community, to hook into the other lists and bring their experience, strength and hope back. Now, the voices are streaming in. It is pretty exciting. We will continue to work with this over the next few months and see what is best.

These classes will begin Wednesday, September 15, 2010. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Brain Chemistry - Beta Endorphin (2 weeks) is one of our most popular classes. It will teach you the core of the science behind the program. This is the outline for a critical part of sugar sensitivity, why you act the way you do and what you can do to change it. I love this class and so do all the people who have taken it. Somehow BE rocks!

Radiant Step 2 Introduction (2 weeks) will teach you the basics of journaling. The class will give you step by step instructions in how to record your food and feelings in a way that gets you excited.

Getting to Radiant Ranch (4 weeks) is is an ongoing 8-week class to provide skills, motivation and support in getting to Radiant Ranch. This class is geared to people who may be on limited funds and who feel that there is no way they can make it to Ranch. This class will empower you and give you concrete skills. The money spent on this class will be applied to your Ranch tuition.

These classes will begin Wednesday, September 22, 2010. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Radiant Step 1 (2 weeks) is our foundation class to get you started. Learn all four parts of step 1 in a structured way. Learn how to progress through them with enjoyment. Let us support getting your program off to a fabulous start.

Radiant Step 3 (2 weeks) is one of our core classes. This is a skill-based class. If you want to learn the baby steps of a successful step 3, come join us. This class is ALWAYS fun.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

Please wait to sign up for classes until a week or two before, and do not sign up for classes that are not yet scheduled.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

The more you journal, the more intrigued you will become to hear the story your body wants to share. Listen deeply for the miracle.

** Testimonial of the Week **

I just read the chat. Sooo awesome! I really am inspired. It got me thinking. Yesterday, I was munching a bit. Later in the evening. Have those 'poor me' thoughts. But when I was with people, I didn't allow myself to go there. I stayed focused on my task and in the present moment. I think that is sort of like meditation. Which might be why I felt soo much better. I was engaged. My brain was focused and present. Well those are just some thoughts that came up for me after reading chat.

Food is going really well. Had a huge breakfast to help get me through a busy morning and lunch, dinner and snacks ready to go too. It's going to be a amygdala joy-filled day.

Love,
Sandra

P.S. That was so cute, Joy, when all the joy's you got made little beeps on your computer :)

** Radiant Ambassadors **

Do you remember how you first heard about Radiant Recovery? I discovered Potatoes Not Prozac in a bookshop when it first came out, eleven years ago now. I already had a shelf load of self-help and diet books which only ever worked for a short period of time, if at all. I was always on the lookout for any others to add to my collection and I kept hearing Kathleen's name mentioned for some reason.

Little did I know that this little book contained the precise answers I was looking for! I read Potatoes Not Prozac from cover to cover, could not believe that Kathleen knew *my* story, got spooked and then put it on my bookshelf for 5 years! I took the scenic route, you might say!

So, what’s your story? Did someone tell you about it? Did you google ‘sugar addiction’? Did Potatoes Not Prozac fall off the bookshelf as you walked past? Or did you come across a video on YouTube and then figure you had to check it out for yourself?

I’m fascinated by the many different ways in which people have come to find out about Radiant Recovery. And not just to figure out what works and what doesn‘t!

I’d love to hear your story.

** How I Found Radiant Recovery **

We shared some of our stories the first night of Ranch and it is so neat to hear how people find the program. I don't think much is by chance and certainly not in my finding the program.

In July 2001 I was at a convention in Des Moines, Iowa and a group of people and their spouses had gotten together for dinner as we were in another online group together. Afterwards we went to the pool, hot tub and steam room and only one other gal and I were left at the end of the evening. She told me that she needed to leave soon as she had to go and order a baked a potato and I wondered about it and asked why a potato in particular?

When she told me about the program it really hit home. I had been searching for answers for years as my dad was an alcoholic and my mom was ss and I knew I had a problem with sugar but had never figured out what to do about it. I had even gone through an eating disorders program in 1992 but it didn't stick as no one knew about white flour etc.

When I went back to my room I asked my DH to look up RR on the internet and joined the bigones list and have been doing the program ever since.

I went to my first ranch in 2002 and each time it has helped me to take my program to the next level. I found about the program when I was at the end of my rope and at a time when I was completely open to it.

** Radiant Kitchen **

Roast Sticky Chicken
  • 4 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. paprika
  • 1 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp. onion powder
  • 1 tsp. thyme
  • 1 tsp. white pepper
  • ½ tsp. garlic powder
  • ½ tsp. black pepper
  • 1 large roasting chicken
  • 1 cup chopped onion
In a small bowl, thoroughly combine all the spices. Remove giblets from chicken, clean the cavity well and pat dry with paper towels. Rub the spice mixture into the chicken, both inside and out, making sure it is evenly distributed and down deep into the skin. Place in a re-sealable plastic bag, seal and refrigerate overnight.

When ready to cook chicken put it in the Crockpot with the onion and do not add any liquid. As the cooking process goes on it will produce its own juices. Cook on low 8 to 10 hours and it will be falling off the bone tender.

** Radiant Conversations **

Well, now if we thought those first chats on the amygdala was exciting, the follow-ups were even more so. And what fun to see the difference in the USA and Euro conversations! I don't think I have ever conducted a chat that was more complex than the Wed. USA one. You all got so excited, I could barely keep up. But I think this conversation about the role of brain healing is affecting us all. I love that we are able to take the science and really explore how it manifests in your daily lives. What FUN!

Chats are held as part of the Your Last Diet online program. You are most welcome to join and come to chat.

If you are not a YLD member, come and join us. Click here if you are ready to change your life or just have some plain ol' fun!

** Our Online Groups **

The Radiant Movement list is for people who want to start moving again and to baby step into a regular exercise program. If you can remember how much fun it was to move when you were a child and you've lost that, the Movement list is the perfect place for you. And, if you don't remember, we'll help you rediscover it. There are some wonderful people on the list who will share their stories and help you explore different options to form a movement plan that works for you.. We are enthusiastic about our own exercise, but we also understand first hand how hard it was to start and to baby step into regular movement. It's a great list; come join us.

Or come to the group page to find the one that will best support your program: http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm

**Mosaic Starts Moving **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

Just trying to arrange my thoughts on this process.

I completed my posts and have been spending some time thinking about what this experience brought me. I don't think I was prepared for the powerfulness of posting LOL. Though I know posting regularly has helped me more than I can say, this focused intention 90/90 has really been a bit life-changing I think.

It started off on a purely physical aim - to get me moving. I have to admit - if it comes to a choice between reading my book and moving - book wins. So that was the really simple thing - 90/90 to get me tuned in to the idea. I had to decide to do it.

Then it grew a bit . I started off walking 10 minutes from my house and 10 minutes back. This morphed into a 15/15. On the way, I discovered how to get into a new dialogue with my body. A two-way conversation. I am pretty sure I used to see my body as a digestive system that caused me problems. Then I learned to listen. Now I am aware of my skeletal structure and muscles and how it all works together. I don't see mind/body/spirit as separate any more, but overlapping. It started off as a simple walk, but was marvellous thinking and listening time and so got to be a really holistic experience.

One of the nicest things is I have learnt where my core muscles are and how to use them more effectively.. they kind of sing to me now of where I am and I have become much more coordinated. I've learnt how to treat my feet, good footwear, good care, and how if I get my feet right, its so helpful for my skeleton all the way up ( shades of foundation building there!)

We talk of 'Intention' and 'Connection' here and I think this has been going on in several different dimensions for me. Stating my intention very clearly and openly, then connecting with it. The actual physical "doing" of it, the planning, actions and movement has had effects on my muscles and limbs but also on my brain. As I walk the pathways near home I'm also creating new pathways in my brain.

I have a new respect for my body.

My knee pain has decreased so much I don't avoid going upstairs anymore.

I found out how to do massages and exercises for achy feet This is a self- care good thing!

I have got interested in getting more knowledgeable about walking ( yep! walking and interested in the same sentence!)

Discovered some ace foot exercises that will stand ( pardon pun) me in good stead for years to come.

Some rather snug favourite tops have got wearable and loose again, new wardrobe for nothing!

Found how to prioritise when I need to ( tape the TV and come back later ).

Found how to be adaptable ( raining? walk on the spot to the aforementioned TV show).

Found a new subtlety in a two-way conversation about what my body and I want.

Thanks for jollying me along!
