November 15, 2010

Hi {!firstname_fix}

What a week it has been. I celebrated my birthday today. A number of friends came out or over for the event and we really had fun partying. This is so much of what I love about radiance and recovery...being able to just be present to the moment, to enjoy good friends and to have fun. How apropos for the play class (smile).

The trees have mostly lost their leaves so it is starting to look more like November. I usually start playing the Messiah 'round about now...I could not get my stereo to work and was really upset about this. I finally went on line, got the manual and went through all the problem solving. I discovered that the cord to the power box was unplugged. This, of course, made me laugh. Now the music is streaming through the house.

There will be no classes beginning

Wednesday, November 17 or Wednesday, November 24.

This class will begin December 1, 2010.

Radiant Play (2 weeks) - the material that came out of our discussions about the amygdala in chat. I learned that play has a huge impact on our ability to handle emotional change, and to make sense of the world. It was mind boggling to me. We will be talking about the neurochemistry of play. Why it is especially important for ss people and why even more so for those of us who have committed to recovery.

This class is not about the psychology of play. It is about the the neurochemistry of it and why it is so crucial for us. So come take it for you, or if you are a parent or grandparent, for your children. You know I get excited when I design a new class.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

Please wait to sign up for classes until a week or two before, and do not sign up for classes that are not yet scheduled.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

Ok, so I lay down and had a think about it and tried to figure out why I like plants and this is what I got...

The world that I live in is so fake. People around me are only interested in how a person looks. They buy clothes that they know are made in horrific conditions and they say, 'But I NEED another skirt/top/dress.' We are so far removed from reality by tv, ads and the constant need to fill some imagined void in our lives with THINGS, that I find plants, trees in particular, to be a remedy for me. Trees don't lie to you, or pretend to be something they're not (well this is not true actually because the cabbage gum tree pretends to be a silver birch tree, lol). When they do, it's more amusing and interesting than galling. Trees don't starve themselves to look good or harm themselves so that other trees will know they are in pain. Plants taste poison and die, try to avoid it, build defenses over time..they don't search out that which is killing them.

Plants and trees don't expect me to be anything, I'm sure they would prefer if I killed less of them, or if I stopped knocking them over when they are young, but they don't shout at me. I can't resent a plant, but I can watch it grow. Plants give me food that has a taste and teach me things like sometimes it's worth waiting and asking somebody instead of cutting off the tops of beans, or that you can put a seed in the wrong soil, forget to water it and eventually put it in the ground late, then weed it by mistake and try and put it back in...and it will still grow.

Plants just ARE, they aren't faffing about or worrying if their tomatoes are as big as the other guy's tomatoes...they just take what they are given and make what they can and try not to die in the process.

I also like trees just because, for no other reason than they are. I like sitting in them, I DO hug them. When I feel really bad, trees even listen to me. Hundreds of years old and just watching the human race make countless mistakes, trees just grow away as long as they can.

How do you discuss your food needs when you go out?

Well, I had a great chance to practice the other day! Now that my kids are getting older I don't see many of the mums at school very often so a couple of weeks ago one of them suggested we go out for a meal to catch up. I thought it was a great idea until I realised she was talking about going to an Italian restaurant. Italian generally isn't a great choice for me. Normally I would have declined the invite (smile) but I really wanted to go - so I had to get over myself and try a different approach LOL!

I told the girl who was organising it that I would love to come but would like to check out the menu first. She totally understood. I checked out the menu and the first thing I spotted was chicken with mushrooms, veggies and roasted new potatoes. Perfect!!

We went out on Thursday evening and had a blast! It was really nice to be able to be myself and enjoy it and to state my needs too. I even told them about being sugar sensitive and a little about Radiant Recovery. The one person I hadn't spoken to about this was not in the least bit shocked or surprised but actually interested. Who would have thought, eh?

I'm laughing because this is kinda big for me - I can do all the talking about Radiant Recovery and sugar sensitivity on Twitter and online (where nobody knows me!), but when it comes down to renegotiating existing relationships I have been putting it off. But funnily enough it didn't hurt one little bit :)
What do you say when you want to tell someone about doing the food?

** How I Found Radiant Recovery **

Hi, I am Barbara and I am living in France right now. I read Potatoes not Prozac a long time ago and realized that I was not ready at that time. I am reading The Sugar Addict's Total Recovery Program right now. I found the website and decided to join and find out as much as I can so I can be successful. I also very much would like a support group. Two minds are better than one I believe. Look forward to the class.

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

A number of you have asked what the differences are between our shakes and who should use what, when. I thought it might help to do a little review for you.

George’s® Original is a mixed protein powder. It has our recommended vitamins and a complex carb right in it. So it is basically a mix and go product. The primary protein is soy, so it is ideal for women over 45, men and people in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. It is not advised for teens or children. And it is not good for cooking. But is has great holding power and really, really makes you feel good. Add some fish oil to your shake and it will taste CREAMY!

George’s® Restore is a whey protein isolate with a little milk protein isolate and egg white added in for taste. It is creamy and very light flavored. You can mix it with almost anything including milks, pancakes, peanut butter, etc. Many people use it to supplement Original if they need more protein but not more vitamins. Everyone who has tried it tells us that they think it is the best tasting whey protein product they have had.

Then you can add flavors as you like. And I can send shake just about anywhere. And many of you are now getting it on subscription. That means, I just send it out without your having to keep filling out that order form. And we can work out a schedule that works for you.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

** Radiant Conversations **

Chats were so much fun last week. We were being very diligent and talking about stillness and paying attention and then somehow got on the topic of our winter tradition of a stocking exchange. Now, this is a very incredible part of what we do each year. We have a data base and if you would like to receive a stocking, you put your name in and then you pick a person to send a stocking to. I started this one year when all my family was going to be gone on Christmas and I was feeling alone. Something magical happened. First I learned that many of us feel this same way.And it did matter if people celebrated Christmas. The idea of gifting just seemed like a wonderful thing to do in midwinter when the darkness is long.

As we talked in chat, all the feelings of doing this process came tumbling out. It is not about money, and often people pick people they don't know well..then it starts with the hunting for tiny treasures..turn a sugar sensitive person loose on this task and a miracle happens..office supply stores, toy stores, thrift shops, senior craft shops become part of the quest. Many people shared that they had been thinking about this all year and had been gathering little things for their person, whoever that might be.

There was something about the energy that seems like the essence of what we are about..bringing healing into the darkness. Taking a huge task, and simply doing one thing...and that one thing changes the quality of the whole season. I think Radiant stockings is my most favorite thing of the whole year. I think especially since YLD was born out of the desperation of weight loss, and being fat and trying to solve the pain of that, for all of us...something shifted. We started filling rather than fixing.

And unexpectedly, the weight loss shifted too. I will be sharing with you some of our *results typical* weight loss stories, so you can see that we are still doing that original purpose with joy and astounding success.

If you are not a YLD member, come and join us. Click here if you want to be a part of the latest and greatest or just have some plain ol' fun!

** Our Online Groups **

The Radiant Step One list is a great place to learn the nuances of breakfast, build a strong foundation for the rest of the steps, and find how helpful it is to share our journey with others. It is great for new people and those who have been on the program a long time. Sharing helps everyone.

The awesome thing is we all, Step 1 or Step 7, eat breakfast every single day. How cool is that?

We have had a lot of people join us this week. Do plan on coming over to the Step One list to talk with others about what you are learning. Since we are doing the breakfast class this week, it is a nice combination.

Or come to the group page to find the one that will best support your program: http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm

**What's For Breakfast? **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

"When you wake up in the morning, Pooh," said Piglet at last, "what's the first thing you say to yourself?"

"What's for breakfast?" said Pooh. "What do you say, Piglet?"

"I say, I wonder what's going to happen exciting today?" said Piglet.

Pooh nodded thoughtfully. "It's the same thing," he said.
