October 24, 2011

Hi {!firstname_fix}

I stopped in at Starbucks this morning. I looked up at the sky. It was bright, bright blue and there were three yellow hot air balloons drifting over. It was breathtaking. The air in NM at this time of year is like an elixir. Soft, clear and shimmering with energy. Add yellow pumpkins and red chili and things are just super!

I am including more about Halloween in this issue. Mostly as I work through feelings about missing my Josie..she was the Halloween girl and I remember her dressing up in her unicorn costume and laughing and laughing.

This year, I will do something different and that will help.

These classes will begin Wednesday, October 26, 2011. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Radiant Step 1 (2 weeks) is our foundation class to get you started. Learn all four parts of step 1 in a structured way. Learn how to progress through them with enjoyment. Let us support getting your program off to a fabulous start.

Radiant Step 3 (2 weeks) is one of our core classes. This is a skill-based class. If you want to learn the baby steps of a successful step 3, come join us. This class is ALWAYS fun.

Handling the Holidays: Thanksgiving (2 weeks) - will help you focus on gratitude rather than pie. Learn how to make this day a time of reflection and grace even if Uncle Sandy gets drunk and your sister asks about your weight.

These classes will begin Wednesday,November 3, 2011. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Radiant Play (2 weeks) - Play has a huge impact on our ability to handle emotional change, and to make sense of the world. We will be talking about the neurochemistry of play. Why it is especially important for ss people and why even more so for those of us who have committed to recovery.

This class is not about the psychology of play. It is about the the neurochemistry of it and why it is so crucial for us. And because we have been talking about play in chats, we will incorporate these ideas as well - what kind of play works for *you*...how can you nurture it?

Understanding the Dance of Abuse (2 weeks) - This is a unique class that I offer every two years. It will help you understand abuse and bullying in relationship. We will be looking at both the abuser and the victim parts of the dance. It is the start of a 2-part class series. The first is to make sense of it, the second is designed to help you step out of the dance.

Please note that we will be offering the Getting to Ranch Class again in January. This is a 6-week class designed to help people with a limited income find alternative ways to get to Ranch. Last year it was very successful. Everyone who wanted to come to Ranch was able to come because of the hot tips s/he learned in the class. The class is $49 and the class fee can be applied to your ranch fee if you decide to come.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

Once you have experienced a week of radiance, you will always return to it. Your molecules will remember and want it.

** Testimonial of the Week **

I am happy to report that despite some obstacles, I have been able to make it through 7 days of breakfast on time! I am feeling quite good about it and realize just how much I need my breakfast as a foundation.

Another observation I have made is that a steady step 3 (or steadier!) has caused me to be much more resilient. Unlike earlier in my program, when a slip up would cause me to wallow and become immobile, I am finding that I am MUCH more likely to pick myself up, talk myself through and get back on track! It is wonderful to know that I have the skills to do what I need to do, no matter what life throws at me!

Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Kate

** Radiant Ambassadors **

There's a great site called Yahoo Answers that I stop by every so often. You can ask any question and hopefully someone will see it and come along and answer it for you.

I found the following question 'has anyone done the Radiant Recovery plan' and thought it might be fun to share it here to see if anyone wanted to answer the question:

** How I Found Radiant Recovery **

Hi everyone! My name is Karen, I am on Step One, and I live in Florida. I am looking forward to this class and hope to learn about pages on Radiant Recovery's site that I haven't come across yet. I ordered Potatoes Not Prozac about a month ago from Amazon after seeing a copy on the shelf at a health food store and I learned about Radiant Recovery from reading the book. I belong to the StepOne group and signed up for the StepOne class and plan to become a member of the Radiant Recovery Weight Loss Program as soon as I can.

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

Pro Omega Co Q10 This week I would like to remind you that we carry a wonderful fish oil that includes CoQ10. This supplement has gotten lots of good press as a healthy heart support. Check in at Wiki to read more about the things it is being used for. They include heart health, migraine, cancer, blood pressure, periodontal disease and radiation injury. Pretty interesting read.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

Mexican Lettuce Wraps

This week I came home to a wonderful dinner that my husband made – Mexican Lettuce Wraps made with grilled fish. Thought I’d share it here.

On the table were bowls of:
  • Brown rice
  • Cherry Tomatoes, diced
  • Black beans
  • Sour cream
  • Guacamole
  • Hot peppers
  • Salsa
  • Washed Lettuce leaves
  • Grated Purple cabbage
  • Lime wedges
He used cod fish but you could use any fish you like. He sprinkled it with chipotle chili powder and drizzled lime juice over it. Then grilled it 3-4 minutes per side. Once it was cooked he cut the fish into small chunks.

Everyone got to make their own wraps, to their liking. It was a delicious. I can’t wait for a repeat of this meal!

** Our Online Groups **

Introduction to Radiant Cooking is a group for people in all stages of the program who want to explore new ways of cooking. We have people who have cooked little in the past, but want to begin preparing their own meals so that they can be sure of having delicious, program friendly food. There are also people who have always been good cooks, but are now fixing different kinds of foods.

We gather around a virtual kitchen table, with a nice cup of tea and our questions and ideas. People bring experiments, successes, and suggestions. It's a great place to ask what to do with a food you haven't tried before! Or, to tell us what you found to do with it. We love to hear everyone's ideas and success stories!

Or come to the group page to find the one that will best support your program: http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm

**Converting Scary Stuff to Fun **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

Angela wrote this for the parents' list. I thought it showed the essence of recovery....taking a painful past and converting it into something really fun. This makes me love the idea of Halloween. And..I think it is a perfect model for any holiday. See what you think.

I was thinking recently about how fun Halloween has become for our family. Talk about a holiday transformed :-) I thought I'd list some of my favorite things.
  • Making orange and black paper chains with my kids and stringing them around the house (this has become a Halloween tradition for us).

  • Decorating the house with Halloween crafts like bats, spiders and webs, pictures of pumpkins, whatever we make together.

  • Looking for silly, yummy and spooky snacks that I can make for our Halloween party and also just for my kids as Halloween treats.

  • Planning Halloween costumes, this year we decided to make them homemade!

  • Having friends over for a Halloween party and playing LOTS of games together.

  • Watching all the kids gobble up all the healthy whole-grain sugar-free Halloween snacks :-)

  • Finding fun things to give to kids as treats instead of candy, like glow sticks or temporary tattoos that turn your hand into an animal face.

  • A nourishing, warm dinner for my family, that has been simmering all day in the slowcooker, eaten right before we head out trick or treating.

  • My kids looking forward to going trick or treating and it's not because of the candy.

  • Being goofy and fun about our money-for-candy exchange after trick or treating.

  • My excited and giggly kids as we head out on our evening shopping trip, right after the exchange, still in our costumes.

  • Tucking in my tired but level-headed, stable and content kids after an exciting Halloween day.

  • The satisfaction of not having Halloween candy in the house after Halloween, causing days or weeks of meltdowns (on my part too!)

  • The fact that I don't buy Halloween candy early anymore then eat it all, and need to buy more before Halloween.

  • The fact that I don't sneak candy from my kids trick or treating hoard anymore.

  • That I don't see Halloween as the beginning of a dangerous slide into feeling totally out of control with all the sugar of the upcoming holidays.

  • That I have learned how to have fun with my family during Halloween, because I can focus on something other than the sugar.

  • Teaching my kids that the essence of radiance is this joy we have together when playing and living into a life of recovery.
