April 2, 2012

Hi {!firstname_fix}

Well no question that it is spring here. All the flowering trees are out, daffodils are everywhere, tulips are getting started and the water is flowing in the irrigation ditches.

We are doing all the last preparations for Ranch. Elaine was down a few weeks ago to pick up her puppy so I took her over to the room we will be using. It looks out to the mountains and has a balcony wrapping that entire East Side. On the south end of the room is a display of pottery from the Native American Pueblos that go up and down the Rio Grande River here in New Mexico. It is a lovely space and I think it will seriously enhance the experience.

We have people coming from the UK and Ireland, Canada and from Australia as well as all over the US. People from step 0 to long-time Step 7. It will be a nice mix. I am going to write more about the history of ranch in the article I do today.

We do have a scholarship program for ranch so if any of you can't make it, but would like to help in someone else attending who couldn't otherwise come, please consider making a donation to the fund.

This class will begin Wednesday, April 4, 2012. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Addiction Ameba (2 weeks) - I have revised and updated this class. It will give you a chance to learn a process of looking at and working with the other addiction stuff that may be operating even after you have worked on the food. So you have gotten the food steady and are ready to take a look at the other stuff - gambling, debt, shopping, work, money, sex, you name it, this is a good class. We will be totally non judgmental and provide you with unique tools to start the next level of your healing.

This class will begin Wednesday, April 11, 2012. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Step 2

Step 2: Introduction (2 weeks) - will teach you the basics of journaling. The class will give you step-by-step instructions in how to record your food and feelings in a way that gets you excited.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

Rather than responding to problems or roadblocks with tears, you will start anticipating and solving problems.

** Testimonial of the Week **

That's funny (in the strange way, not the haha way) I felt RR would make me less free when I first started. That was a big part of my resistance. But guess what? I *gained* freedom instead.

No more fighting the urge to binge or giving in and feeling awful. No more hating myself for being fat or crabby. No more hiding half a sheet cake in my closet and *having* to pick at it all day or buying something at the store and scarfing it down in the back of the parking lot - praying no one would drive by and see me.

No more ordering two sodas at McDonalds and throwing one away so the person waiting on me wouldn't know it was all for me. No more going out with friends or to a gathering and concentrating on the sweets instead of enjoying the fun. No more depression. No more mood swings.

No more feeling as if something is missing - and never finding out what it is. No more hating myself.

Breakfast is the first step to that freedom. And we can move slowly so we don't have to be afraid of what lies ahead.

Carrie

** How I Found Radiant Recovery **

I had seen the book once in a book club catalog, but I didn't order it. Much later, I was listening to the New Dimensions radio show, and I heard an interview with Candace Pert. She was talking about one of her books, and it sounded interesting. So, I went to the library to look for the book. They didn't have her book, but the catalog showed that she had written the introduction for this book called Potatoes Not Prozac. "Hmm, maybe I'll check it out." The rest is history ;) - Jim

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

My Hoof Alive arrived in the mail today. It is very thick, smooth, and buttery. Kind of looks life lemon curd. I have used it several times today, and I have been very pleased with the texture and consistency when I rub it between my fingers and into my cuticles. It seems to absorb into my skin well while also leaving a thin, protective, but not greasy, coating on the skin's surface. Furthermore, the scent is very subtle and not offensive unlike some creams I have used.

Leah

And here is an insider tip as well. Kathleen has been putting this stuff on the dogs’ nails. I said, *Whatever are you doing!* She said, *It keeps them from cracking.* I thought she was nuts, but you know what, I just went and looked at a paw and nails. Hmm...that is interesting. You gotta try this stuff. Put it on your toes for summer, LOL.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

** Radiant Kitchen **

I love broccoli! Here is a yummy recipe that is sure to win over your family to eating greens. I adapted this from a real simple magazine recipe.

BROCCOLI WITH GARLIC LEMON CRUMBS

  • 2 slices Ezekiel bread (or any whole grain bread of your choosing) or you can substitute with 3 slices of Ryvita
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 lemon
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 large bunch broccoli, cut into florets
Grate the zest from the lemon and then cut the lemon in half, squeezing the juice from half the lemon and putting it aside. Put the bread in a food processor or blender to make bread crumbs. Heat the oil in a small skillet. Add the bread crumbs and sauté over medium heat until toasted. Add the crushed garlic and the lemon juice into the pan. Add the salt and cook, stirring constantly, until dry. Place the florets on a microwave-safe plate and sprinkle with a few tablespoons of water. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave 3 to 5 minutes or until crisp-tender. Remove and sprinkle with the Garlic Lemon Crumbs.

And all sorts of other aspects of this step. We try to make it fun, because... well why not make it fun?? It's a great place of support... come and join us! **Radiant Ranch 2012 **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I started doing Radiant Ranch in 1999, so that was 13 years ago. Our first Ranches were held up in Georgia O'Keefe country in Abiquiu. The landscape was breathtaking, but it is quite a trip up there. We decided that it would be more accessible to hold it down here in Albuquerque. We have worked hard to get the right venue that offers accessibility, comfort and great food to balance the content that I work hard to prepare for you.

This year we are moving over to the Indian Cultural Center that I think is a perfect find. They are delighted to be working with us and have even adapted their magnificent blue corn pancake recipe to be GF for our breakfasts.

I am excited that this year our content will of course include an introduction to sugar sensitivity and why the seven steps are so effective in creating healing and balance. These two presentations allow new people to get an incredible overview of the theory of *doing the food* as a healing tool.

The other part of our content includes the newest cutting edge material that I have been researching and working on with you during the year. Of course the two contenders include first, the functioning of the amygdala in the brain and why it is so important for sugar-sensitive people. Some of you have been in that class and know how exciting these concepts are. In fact, they were so compelling that I knew we had to have this information on the agenda.

The second of course is our friend the JOY DOT. I have been writing about joy dots here in the newsletter and many of you are sharing your own joy on the lists. What I want to do is show you how the joy dot practice links to healing the amygdala in the brain and why this is so crucial.

I have started the process of building these presentations for you. I think sometimes we get so excited about the food and sights of New Mexico, we forget to talk about the learning that goes on at Ranch. What I have seen over the years is an amazing process. I discover new information by listening to you, then we play with it, explore it, it deepens with your input. Then we take it to Ranch and you comment and buff it, and then it folds back into the shared community knowledge base.

I am just finishing up my latest book which is on life after detox - really step seven...and the material in the book is material you have built and heard at Ranch. So if you are at all interested in being right out there on the cutting edge of our learning, please come on over.

And if you can't, consider the possibility of contributing to our scholarship fund that makes it possible for us to support those community members who are highly motivated, have worked hard and simply do not have the funds to come.

I am really excited about Ranch this year.
