July 23, 2012

Hi {!firstname_fix}

It has been a week of *cleaning up* stuff...I decided that part of my healing involves getting more organized in my office. I actually love this part of my life. The color coding worked so well on my calendar, I am now doing that in my files. Purple for Dog Rescue stuff, yellow for creative things, green for classes, blue for clients. The dogs hear me say *clean up* and they thought they would help. Pepper has a nose for food-type things. I had a bag of the assorted whey protein powders we were testing. Pepper thought she would help with that. I was greeted at the door by a dog with white whiskers. Evidence does not lie! Thankfully I have a good vacuum cleaner and a little green machine to clean the carpet.

We are all getting excited about the Movement class. We *taste tested* some of the concepts in chat and discovered that a surprising number of us had *gym experiences.* We are going to talk about this, LOL. I think it comes with being sugar sensitive or something. Maybe we will add to our repertoire of ss traits, like stationery stores and hardware stores. But make sure to sign up. You know the *first class* thing...they are always wonderful...although I must admit that the play class only gets better each time we do it.

This class will begin Wednesday, July 25, 2012. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Creating Radiant Movement (2 weeks) - A class to learn about movement and exercise in an entirely new way. Learn to *reset* your thinking about the role of exercise in your life

This class will begin Wednesday, August 1, 2012. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Using Radiant Resources (1 week) - is a free orientation for those of you who are brand new and would like to find your way around town. Come sit on the top of our double-decker bus for a guided tour. And even if you are not brand new, this is a really fun class to reconnect with all the treats of the community.

Step 2

Step 2: Introduction (2 weeks) - will teach you the basics of journaling. The class will give you step-by-step instructions in how to record your food and feelings in a way that gets you excited. Learn the nano steps of step 2, share with others who are wanting to create fun journals, and discover why you might be resistant. This will be a really fun hands-on class.
Diabetes (2 weeks) (CEU Available) - An exploration of how to manage your diabetes while working the seven steps. We will look at the 7 steps for diabetics and talk about how to adapt your program. But even more important, we are going to look at what to do with fear, avoidance, denial, resentment and all those other *feeling* things that come along with a diagnosis. And if you are not diabetic, but have someone in your life who is, come join us. Or if you are a professional and want to learn more about how to include this in your skill set, you will learn a lot.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,

** Testimonial of the Week **

I went through the flat like most people. I felt like I didn't have the same intensity to life. I didn't like it. But I also felt like there was a light inside starting to stay on, or internal music that didn't get silent. So I accepted that maybe things might be more dull, but at least I wasn't going down into the black hole anymore.

Now my life is full and exciting. The flat went away after a while. I love my life. I have hard times, but I'm there for them. I have exhilarating times. Radiance feels like I go through life as who I truly am, without drugs or blocking out or super stimulants.

Radiance is staying awake, which can be hard. But it also gives me a stronger connection to what I call God. I think it took at least 6 months to change, and it kept changing long after that. I've been off sugar for over 6 years now and feel such ease and stability with food.

I'm enjoying all your posts, cheering you on, Cheryl.

JoEllen

** Radiant Ambassadors **

Have you ever wondered what ambassadoring is all about?

How you can get involved?

Well, Deanne joined us this week and shared what she had been doing:

"Hello RR Ambassadors,

I have been wondering what group to join. I realize after reading the newsletter that this is the group i want to be part of. Last week I traveled to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and had a wonderful chat with a seat mate. In the end I gave a Radiant Recovery card to him and felt very happy to have shared my story and journey with sugar addiction. I also buy extra books and give them away. In addition, I would love to have a group at my church. However, I have not yet figured that one out. While in Edmonton I met with another RR person for lunch. We were so pleased to talk in person and give each other support as well as tell our stories".

Go Deanne!!!

So it sounds as though sharing our stories is key. Who have you shared your story with lately?

Do let us know!

Come join us if you are excited about spreading the news.

** How I Found Radiant Recovery **

Hi, everyone, My name is Shirley.

I'm a grandmother who volunteers at a bookstore that sells donated books to raise funds for a scholarship to a nearby college. One donated book was Your Last Diet. I haven't had as serious a problem as some with weight, but I do need to shed some pounds and stop sugar. 3 or 4 cookies for lunch dessert every day is not necessary. Of course, there was much more if you look at the whole day. So I bought the book and have been working on the steps. I need to keep at it. I have been sleeping better, which is good, but haven't lost any weight. Forgot to tell you I live in Rochester, NY (actually the Town of Irondequoit). We learn to take advantage of every sunny day that we get. I have 6 children (who are all married), 16 grandchildren and 6 great grand children, Good to hear from all of you.

Shirley

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

We are doing something very unusual this month. We are going to offer a special on the USA RANCH for 2013. If you sign up now during the special, the tuition will only be $199. This special will only run until the end of this month and will not be repeated.

Ranch is way more than a *seminar* - Here is what Claire said about it -

"I know that most of you are really curious about our ranch experience. All I can tell you is that what is superficially a conference about food, is actually a life changing and spiritual experience and I am very, very glad that I went."
And for those of you who are addicted to *Breaking Bad*...we now have a formal tour in the Albuquerque Trolley. I don't know how it compares to the tour Kathleen gave last spring, but the paper said it was fabulous. We are still laughing that some people may be more excited about the TV show sets than sugar sensitivity, but figure you can have both.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

** Radiant Kitchen **

Frittatas! Ohh, YUM. :)

I make one where I use thinly sliced skin-on potatoes on the bottom - I put a little oil and butter in the skillet on top of the stove, put the potatoes in overlapping to make a thin layer and cook it (without moving the potatoes around) until they start turning translucent.

Next I scatter some leftover veggies and shredded cheese over the potatoes (whatever I have on hand for both).

Then I pour my beaten eggs over all and stick it in the oven to finish cooking.

The potatoes form a crispy bottom, and it is sooo good. I haven't tried rice in the bottom before - but will now! :)

** Radiant YLD **

We are recrafting your laughing diet these days. Why is it that when we started laughing, we started losing? Not sure yet, but I know there is a connection. I recently was reading some article thingies over on Real Age about *Say Goodbye to Belly Flab in 9 Steps.* It said, *get the rockin' body you've dreamed of by using these tricks to swap your jelly belly for some lean, mean stomach muscles.* Here is the list:
  • Start by setting your goals
  • Use a pedometer [walk 10,000 steps a day]
  • Stick to good carbs
  • Clean out your fridge [take out the pizza, cookie dough and full-fat cheeses]
  • Lift your own weight [crunches, situps, etc.]
  • Take time to relax
  • Eat Well [watch portion sizes, choose healthy foods, be aware of how many times you visit the snack cupboard, but don't make things too difficult]
  • Track your progress [measure your waistline weekly]
  • Reward yourself [brag on facebook, get new workout gear or a session with a trainer]
It was actually a perfect summary of the messages we are all awash with. Just do this stuff and you will have lean, mean stomach.

Sounds pretty simple, yes? And then when we are not able to just *do it,* it is our fault. *Why can't you just?* is the next question that gets thrown at us. But it is intriguing to me, all the pictures online with this Say Goodbye to Belly Flab are of 30 year old white women who wear a size 8. And I don't think the copy writers even notice the implications of using a term like *flab* to talk about belly size. Or *jelly belly* or why we might want to be lean and mean. We are surrounded with these messages ALL the time.

When i was setting up the movement class, I went over to istock photo to find an image of an older, bigger person doing something, anything fun. There are no pictures of someone like us. Eleven hundred images and not one was a bigger person. So I put in *plus* and all the images were of fat, miserable people. This was really, really stunning to me. We cannot be invisible any more.

I am going to redesign the YLD pages so you can see us laughing, dancing, swimming, biking, hiking....and maybe the workout gear as a reward isn't so bad....says she who just got some new SHOES with turquoise soles.

** Our Online Groups **

In the RadiantDiabetes group we talk about the different aspects of managing our diabetes while following the guidelines of the RR program. As you might imagine, it is a little more difficult to keep our BS levels in a good range than it is for people who don't have diabetes. We do this with humor and lots of sharing. If you have diabetes, pre-diabetes, or someone you love has them and you would like to get more information, as well as support and encouragement, please come join us.

Or come to the group page to find the one that will best support your program: http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm

**Climbing a Mountain **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

We started at the lake. The water was perfectly still and clear, an incredible color blue. I could see the stones shimmering on the bottom of the lake. The gold trees on the other side were reflected in the water. Stillness, total stillness. An image I will use when I am meditating and wanting to quiet my mind. That stillness is what I seek.

We went back to the car and then drove, up and up, around and around the switchbacks, catching glimpses of the tops of the peaks. It took a long time and we finally arrived at the Visitor Center that was closed for the season. Behind the Center is a boardwalk. Made of many planks, weathered to silver, it is wide and sturdy, safe and easy to walk on.

Bill asked me if I wanted to climb some. The boardwalk seemed safe and easy enough. I hadn't counted on the fact that it was going UP!. After the first few 100 feet, I thought I would die. I was gasping for breath, my latent asthma was commenting. I used my inhaler, and figured we could just go slow, a baby step at a time. I was laughing at THAT idea. Where had I ever heard such a concept!

So we climbed. Bill would say, "You just need to go up that far." Ironically it turned out that *that far* happened seven times. I just kept climbing. Some folks were down below at the Center with one of those long horns they use in the alps. The music was rolling up the mountain. It actually looks like the alps up there. Bill said, "If you get to the top, you will be able to see the hidden lake. And there are some goats up there. Perhaps we will see them." I liked the idea of the lake and the goats.

We kept climbing. It was about 2 miles UP, very up. We did get to the top. We did see goats, a big male who sat there very still and looked me in the eye and then later, his wife and two babies. We stood at the top, looking at the blue lake below, very far below. I have never, ever seen anything like this. All my life, I have gone into REI for my *stuff* and fantasized about climbing a mountain. I imagined my movements, and the view, but it was my imagination. Here it was, now real.

Going down, I had to pee so I went off into a little stand of pines. After, I turned to my left and there was a big, flat mauve rock. I sat down on it and breathed the scent of pine and thought, "You are almost 59 years old, you climbed that mountain." And my molecules said they want to do this more. They said they want me to have a body that suits me better. Inside I am so fluid, so supple, so joyous. My body has suffered from menopause and a little more *gist* that it wanted. Some extra pounds discovered themselves on my middle.

I want to be like that mountain goat, to climb, to be at ease there. I want to swim in the lake with a body that is me. The mountain moved me. Deeply. My body knows it did and my body will follow so that the mountain moving day becomes who I am.
