August 6, 2012

Hi {!firstname_fix}

What a week. The rains have come to NM, so we go from being dry, dry to WET in a moment. The trees sing with joy. The grass drinks and drinks and the rescue dogs plop into the mud. The house dogs want to plop in the mud but for some reason their mom says no, no, no.

It is still hot but cool in the evening. And Jupiter and Venus are low in the sky at 5 AM looking like the star that the wise men followed. I am getting ready for my annual trip to Maine and water. This will be nice!

This class will begin Wednesday, August 8, 2012. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Step 1

** Testimonial of the Week **

Hi everyone,

Well little did I know when I was stumbling around with this breakfast Step One throughout June that it would all come together for me and I would be able to actually do it as it was meant to be done for weeks at a time.

So what helped me the most? I think it was definitely posting on this list day after day. So, if there is anyone out there lurking, reading the breakfast list posts, and trying to pull it all together without success--- come join us, speak up, and let the wonderful people on this list help you as they did me! We would love to meet you, where you are.

Today I had PP shake with greek yogurt, oatmeal, blueberries, banana, my fibers, and almond milk, within the hour.

Have a wonderful day, breakfast friends--

Paula

** How I Found Radiant Recovery **

Hi, I'm Donna and I'm from Sydney, Australia. I discovered Radiant Recovery a couple of months ago through a web search looking for information on sugar intolerance.

I've been up and down with my weight and fitness all my life and was diagnosed with major depression a couple of years ago. I've fluctuated back and forth up to 100 pounds with my weight and have varied from doing irregular exercise to running marathons. It has been an endless source of frustration to me that I can be so disciplined and feel I've achieved things I can be proud of only to have it all slip away and then face the daunting prospect of doing it all over again. That even when doing so much that is deemed to be healthy I'd still be moody, depressed and be fighting the fear that everything would inevitably fall apart for me again.

Reading Kathleen's book Potatoes Not Prozac has been the first time I felt like I'd found an explanation that made sense. I'm on step 2 and what I'm hoping to get out of the class is finding out how to access the resources on the website, especially how to join discussion groups and give and receive support.

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

This week, it makes sense to remind you of two incredible products that can support your program. We carry these incredible digestive enzymes. If you have any kind of digestive stuff going on (constipation, bloating, feeling hungry all the time, or allergies), you might be amazed at how much better you feel by taking the enzymes. The all round one is called Quadrazyme.

The second one we carry is Gammazyme, a specialized enzyme product for people who have ulcers or IBS . Digestive enzymes are great for sugar sensitive people, but one of them, protease can be a problem if your gut is inflamed and open. Gammazyme has no protease so it is safe for you and helps digest your food better. Means YOU get more nutrition.

I know that Kathleen spent a long time looking at different enzyme products before she chose these. And she uses them herself.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

** Radiant Kitchen **

Strawberry Soup

  • 1 lb. (about 4 cups) sliced strawberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 c. apple juice
  • 1 1/2 tsp. lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 tsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
  • 1/8 tsp. ground cardamom
  • Yogurt or sour cream for garnish
  • Sprinkle of cinnamon for garnish
Combine first 8 ingredients in a blender (strawberries through cardamom). Process until smooth; you may need to work in batches. Chill at least 3 hours. Garnish with a dollop of yogurt or sour cream and dust with ground cinnamon. Serve cold. Makes 3 servings.

Notes: If you use frozen strawberries, be sure to purchase unsweetened brands. You may wish to slightly thaw berries to make processing easier. This soup can be served as a refreshing appetizer or as a light dessert. The addition of black pepper may seem odd to you, but it is an old culinary trick which greatly enhances the fruitiness of the strawberries. Do give it a try!

** Our Online Groups **

On the Radiant Fitness list we talk about how doing the food can support our fitness program and vice versa. Some favorite topics are what to eat when doing intensive exercise when all that's out there commercially are sugar filled products. We also talk about what to eat before and after morning workouts, and what to do for those folks whose training program requires a twice a day workout. We just had a great thread on the necessity of sports drinks and how doing the food is better.

We have runners, walkers, bikers, dancers, aerobicizers, yogis, and many more types of exercise enthusiasts on the list. One of the neat things I see on the list is people who are recovering from exercise addiction who are learning how to work exercise back in their life in a healthy way. If any of this fits you, well, come on over and join in

Or come to the group page to find the one that will best support your program: http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm

**Other Drugs **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I have had a couple of intriguing discussions with people about supplements and drugs in the last week or so. One was on melatonin, one on B vitamins and the third was about a blood pressure medication. The common theme in all of them was the person having pretty major physical symptoms directly related to what the people were taking. And no one ever asked about those things in doing a diagnostic work up. Let me give you some examples:

Melatonin is a powerful hormone which can suppress ovulation and cause abdominal pain. It is used as a birth control hormone in horses. Many people are not aware of this and think it is a simply an over-the-counter remedy for sleep problems. I have a friend who spent 6 months in diagnostic hell and whose next step was ovarian exploratory surgery. I finally sat down with her and did some exploratory *other cause* discussion and discovered that her ovarian pain started one month after she started taking melatonin.

I went and did a fair amount of research....and it sure convinced me that for women it is NOT a good thing to take.

Someone else was having some major mood issues....anxiety, depression, agitation and was really concerned that she was having a severe depression episode. For some reason she stopped taking her B vitamins and felt way better. She mentioned this to me after the fact. I asked her to tell me what was in the mix. One of the B's was 100 mg. of thiamin. And I knew straight away that this level of thiamin could cause those symptoms.

Another person started taking a blood pressure medication and about 4 weeks later had a severe depression. His doc was going to put him on an antidepressant for serotonin. I knew that the particular medication was something that blocks beta endorphin and that the antidepressant wouldn't help. I suggested he read up on the med. He did and they switched to a different one.

The point in all of this is to pay attention. Ask questions. Read. Doing the food is really, really helpful...but there are other things to look at as well.

Thanks for reading! If you know someone who could benefit from this, feel free to forward it to them.
