July 15, 2013

Hi {!firstname_fix}

Yesterday morning there was a huge vertical rainbow dropping down right into the building I was headed for. That would be a *joy dot*. We have been having rain here...but it is funny rain. It will throw a downpour in one small section and drop nothing 3 blocks over. The sky over the mountain will be black and then a brilliant rainbow will explode against the darkness.

We are doing some of our summer planning about directions for the community. It energizes us to be thinking about your needs and joys. It also reminds us why we are here - to help one another heal unbalanced sugar sensitivity and to use our balance in service to others. I love that we are able to do this and it does make a difference. As we get the changes more crystallized, I will write more about them for you.

These classes will begin Wednesday, July 17, 2013. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Step 2

Step 2: Introduction (2 weeks) - will teach you the basics of journaling. The class will give you step by step instructions in how to record your food and feelings in a way that gets you excited.
Clearing All That Stuff (2 weeks) - Level I. This class is designed for people who want to start the process of learning how to *declutter*. You will learn a specific and thoughtful approach to your stuff being out of control. Note: If you signed up for this earlier, you will be automatically enrolled. If have not yet signed up, now you have a chance.

These classes will begin Wednesday, July 24, 2013. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Step 1

Step 1 (2 weeks) - is our foundation class to get you started. Learn all four parts of step 1 in a structured way. Learn how to progress through them with enjoyment. Let us support getting your program off to a fabulous start.
Brain Chemistry Serotonin (2 weeks) - is the other of our most popular classes. It helps you make sense of why the potato works, why you have a problem in the winter and how Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can play into this. If you munch in your mind, if you are depressed or edgy or feel sad, this is the class for you.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

**Quote From Kathleen **

This is a process. You do not have a 'sobriety date' to mark that sugars are gone forever. You simply move more and more into a healthy relationship with your body.

**Testimonial of the Week **

You are in the right place! I have suffered from depression in the past, the kind where you can hardly move, can't sleep, can't stay awake, can't live, and feeling like nobody loves me and nothing's worth doing. I've had anxiety that kept me housebound.

Now I am so mentally healthy I almost don't recognize myself. I wake up cheerful for no special reason. I feel like doing the things I used to enjoy My mind is clearer. I feel more confident, even at my current weight. I don't fear social events. I don't feel as if the world has me under a microscope I feel good about the future.

When you're depressed you don't feel like anything is going to help. Just start with Step 1, eating breakfast, every morning, within an hour of getting up, with enough protein for your body, and see if you don't notice a difference the next day. Notice that the first five steps are actually adding things to your life, not taking anything away. When you're depressed you have no energy to do much of anything, so find the easy ways to do the program. People swear by George's Shake for breakfast. Make some hard-boiled eggs to keep in the fridge. Whatever works is what you do. Don't go to the next step until you love the one you're on. This is a gentle, peaceful process that will amaze you, one step at a time! And unlike most diets, this one gets easier as you go along instead of harder. Each step supports the next.

We're here for you!

Lora

**How I Found Radiant Recovery **

My Name is Patt. I am in Naples, Florida...very new to this program. I have read the one book, Potatoes not Prozac, and would like to learn more. I'm finding it difficult to break some very set patterns of mine...namely, trying to eat breakfast. It is already 12:20 EST and I have just had coffee all morning long and really crave carbs at this point! Again, I make small attempts at change for a few days and fall off and begin again with old habits. I want to change, because I know I will feel better.

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

I think you will love the Safe Place CD. It has a special introduction, and is licensed to use the Kolbialka Bolero we all love so much. It is timed for 20 minutes so is ideal for your mediation time.

This CD is the the first in a series of meditation tapes. It is the ground for all the work of stilling the mind and opening your heart to healing.

Kathleen has been using this meditation with her clients for more than 25 years. She uses it as the center of her own spiritual practice. Like her food program, it is deceptively simple. Kathleen takes her listeners to a place of safety.

Use this CD over and over to train a response that is immediate and fully relaxed. Teach your deepest self to be quiet and still. Open your heart to the light and your life will change.

Diane's New England Style Baked Beans

I am a bit of a throw it together kinda cook and go by eye more often than I measure, so this is a collaboration for an actual recipe. :)

  • 2 cans of pinto beans, with the juice.
  • A few slices of bacon, cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 cup apple butter
  • 1 TBS grainy brown mustard or to taste
  • 1/2 of an onion
And from Kathleen:

Here is what I did.
  • I put 2 cans of pinto beans in the crock pot.
  • I sauteed the bacon and one half of a vadalia onion in some olive oil.
  • I mixed the apple butter into the beans and added the mustard.
  • I added the bacon and onion to the beans when they were not quite crisp. I cooked it for about 4 hours in the crock pot.
And it was incredibly good.

**Radiant YLD **

There was a phrase which popped up in YLD chat with Kathleen that really stood out for me. 'Surrender to trying it differently.'

'Trying it differently' turned things around for me. I abandoned all of the *information* that was swirling around in my head about what I should or shouldn't eat and just allowed myself the luxury of doing the steps. Wow, that's really when the fun started! :)

**Our Online Groups **

The Radiantdepression group is all about support for the person who is depressed and trying to work the 7-step program of recovery from sugar addiction. Many of us have struggled with severe depression for years without any hope of finding an end to it. But through doing the food we have found that hope returning and have found light where before there was only darkness.

Some of us are taking anti-depressants while doing the food, so we talk about how the two are compatible and we also share about getting through the tough spots together, with support from each other. If you are feeling depressed please come join us. There is hope.

**Change Leaping Ahead **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I know that many of you have made some very powerful changes in the last few months. I have some thoughts that might offer some helpful insight for you.

I think it is as if suddenly one part of you, either your emotional self or you thinking self, or even your physical self makes some kind of leap forward. Like BAM! That part goes leaping ahead. And the rest remains behind in the dust. The leap in one creates disequilibrium in the whole. And you end up feeling really, really tired.

It is confusing because you may feel like things are good; it makes no sense that you would all of a sudden feel such fatigue. But it isn’t really tiredness, it is actually a pull to be quiet, to concentrate, to remain still to let yourself catch up and create harmony in a new balance. And sometimes, you don’t realize this, you don’t heed it.

Many of you have heard me say, “I think your enthusiasm is running ahead of your brain’s ability to catch up.” This is the same kind of thing. Your growth is running ahead of your assimilation. You need to catch up, you need to rest to assimilate and the parts need to get balanced.

And perhaps, most significantly, you may have to adjust your food.

I think many of us discovered this in the last few months when we changed how we were exercising. What we had been eating was no longer enough. And needing to eat more to be balanced was very disconcerting. It touched all those old feelings of wanting to “restrict” lest we GAIN WEIGHT. We were shocked at how embedded those feelings were.

But we talked about it, and on some level, we totally got the issue of creating harmony. And that changing, increasing our food would reestablish a state of equilibrium that had been broken; it impelled us to a new level of inner awareness. Those who had scoffed at or forgotten the value of the journal found themselves in need of that tool. Going back to it with this new awareness was profound.

The journal became the way to discover what we needed, how much, when. We were looking not only at “best browns” but “best proteins,” “best fats.” We started to learn to determine for each body at this time, exactly, given our personal equation, the level of activity, the level of brain stress, the need to recuperate, just what was needed now at this point in time.

And this knowing emerged about what we thought was fatigue was instead something of a spiritual crisis, for want of a better description. Now I see that it is a reorganization need, a call to use our skills to know positively and precisely what is out of order, why it got disturbed, and what we need to do to put it back together into harmony.

Who would have ever though that “doing the food” could mean such a process!
