Hi {!firstname_fix}

Friday night we had a storm that was unlike anything I have ever seen since I have lived in New Mexico. The rain was torrential and was sheeting sideways. There was so much lightning, it was as if we were in a quadrant of electrical energy. Even the dogs were alarmed. The trees and plants and wildlife, however, are just thrilled that we had big water. Everything is clean and green and sparkling. And of course little weeds have woken up everywhere. I am not resentful of them at all, but bless each tiny one for its resilience in waiting for the rain.

Friday morning I went to an early meeting, No one was on the road. I drove past an open field and there was a tiny coyote floating across the wet grass. She was so graceful and lithe. Gosh she was beautiful.

I found the owners of the old girl we thought was dying. I got her fixed up, took her to the groomer and by Sat morning she was HUNGRY and wanted to eat. The owners were in tears to get her back. And they took my grandmother lecture to heart.. It was a nice ending to the story.

I love this time of year. It feels like new beginnings...maybe the start of school and all those office supplies awakening my heart, maybe some great astrological configuration, maybe the divine breathing in my ear...whatever the cause, the beginning of August always marks a deep breath and renewal.

**Testimonial of the Week **

Some others have given you some good advice, and I have a little add-on. Rushing through the program, crashing and burning and then going back to step one sounds very familiar. Except, with me, I had read the book and heard others talking about doing that so I even tried to trick myself and say that I wasn't rushing through the program, I was just efficient. Truth be told, I did rush to step five, crashed, and finally came back to step one, humbled.

So one thing I told myself that really helped was that I could keep trying to rush through and having to come back to step one, or I could take my time, do it right, and then only have to go through the steps once. Trust me, and I'm sure many others can vouch, going slow is much faster in the long run. And the more you do the steps the less antsy you are about going through them. You learn to appreciate them and know what it feels like to be ready to move to the next step. I'm sorry, I know how rough things are now but I am on Step Six and I can tell you from experience things get so much better, it feels like a miracle. Hope this helped, I'm sending hugs your way!

Katy

**Changes in the Community **

We have changed the classes schedule for August so please check here for the new schedule.

We have taken down the pregnancy and nursing list and added a totally revised resource page. What we learned is that people came over to ask questions and get skills. It seemed far more efficient to collect all the info and put it in one place. Come see what we have done here.

**How I Found Radiant Recovery **

Hello - I'm Anne-Marie. I found Potatoes not Prozac by accident, but it seems to ring a lot of bells with me. I've officially been doing breakfast with the right amount of protein for eleven days now. I'm not trying to skip steps but I have been taking the suggested vitamins (22 days in) and doing the food journal - although figuring out the feelings and emotions is a bit scatty yet. But I'm not worrying about that seeing as technically I shouldn't be doing it as I'm only on step 1 anyway. I just might as well get used to the idea of it! Last year I realised I was getting plump and took steps to rein myself in, mainly by stopping drinking. But when I stopped drinking I was craving sweet stuff. I'm not a chocaholic, but like things like winegums and boiled sweets, sugar in tea, coffee and on cereal. I definitely like sugar, and if I had a bad day that's what I'd run for! Anyway I'm not doing this for weight loss but I have a lot of issues I'd like to deal with in my life and I want to try and treat my body better. Eating salads and veggies is going to be a big challenge for me as the steps progress!

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

For People

For People

For Dogs

Kathleen was first introduced to our Joint Response a number of years ago at the national Golden Retriever Dog show. One of the vendors had Joint Response and was showing a video about it that knocked her socks off. You can see it here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9Dt3LzbbiY&feature=youtu.be

At that point in time, I had recently moved to Albuquerque. My 8-year-old rottie, PJ, had severe arthritis. We gave him Joint Response and in 3 weeks he was acting like a puppy. So we started carry the dog stuff in the store.

We kept getting great reports. I asked the company if they were going to carry a human product. They said yes. So now we carry that. And they recently added a cream. Click on the products above to get more information on each.

As most of you know, Kathleen likes to learn about the things we carry. She started doing a fair amount of research about cetyl. Here is a pretty balanced discussion.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

**Radiant Kitchen **

This is insect repellent but I loved the idea so much, I thought I would share it. DO NOT EAT IT, LOL.

Roughly chop 4 cups of peppermint, 1 cup of orange peel and 1/2 cup lemon peel. Put in a pot just big enough to hold them, and press them down. Add water - just enough to cover. Bring to a boil, immediately take off the heat and cover. Let sit overnight. Strain/reserve the liquid and discard the mint and citrus.

Mix the liquid with equal parts rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle.

I think it works quite well, noting that I do reapply a bit more often than is typical with commercial chemical insect repellant.

I also crush fresh peppermint in my hands and rub it on the dogs, avoiding eyes and nose. It definitely helps repel mosquitoes for them too.

**Our Online Groups **

On the Radiant Step 5 list we talk about the importance of browns, about the different grains available - how to choose, how to cook, how to serve. We explore why for some of us wheat may not be the best alternative or not a good one. Step 5 can be exciting and you can learn how to introduce new things to resistant family members. We also call it the 'coming out' step since it's at this step that when we 'eat out' we may seem different to those not familiar with our program.

Or come to the group page to find the one that will best support your program: http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm

**The Essence of Step Three **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I have been reading a lot of talk about snacks and such and thought it might be helpful to give you some context.

The purpose of step 3 is to create a *steady state* in your brain.

This means having 3 meals at regular intervals with about the same amount of protein and carbs at each meal.

It means introducing you to regular times, not having ice cream at 9 PM and not grazing your way through the morning.

It also means learning to start, STOP and WAIT. (smile)

Step three also gets you to focus on moving your sugar to your meals so it takes the *charge* off of your sugar hit.

That is the core of it.

Now if all this energy is going into snacks, snacks, my questions are…

Are you getting enough to eat at your meals?

Are you eating on time?

Usually the answer is no to both. (smile) Take care of that first.

Now are there times you *need* snacks?

Yes...if you are pregnant or nursing, you NEED them.

If you are exercising intensely, it is good to have a snack after.

If you are a kid, you need something after school.

Otherwise, you probably don't. (smile)

Use this filter to see what is going on for you.
