Hi {!firstname_fix}

Well, I had a marathon week of getting the 6 rescue dogs placed. You can see them all at www.grrnm.com. Now I am packing and writing notes for David who will watch home dogs while I am on vacation. Packing means planning for cold, foggy or warm, sunny. Don't know which. Might be both. One year it rained for a week, Another year the sun shone every day. I will see family and read books, do my TRX and paint the rocks and ocean. It will be nice.

This class will begin Wednesday, August 21, 2013. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Resting when you are tired may seem like an outrageous idea, but learning to take care of your body is the focus of your path to recovery.

**Testimonial of the Week **

I had my meals on time yesterday and ate my 1/4 c whipped sweet potato at 9:30, then brushed my teeth and went to bed. Yay!

It's a bit hard to eat anything at that time of night because I'm not hungry, and I can't imagine how it would ever be possible to eat a whole potato! I also have to drink some water afterwards, and then I definitely have to use the washroom at night... things to observe and tweak as I learn more about this step.

No dreams last night, and for the last three nights I've been sleeping for 5-7 hours without waking up, rather than waking at around 1 and then again at 5.

I'm writing it all in my journal. I get a sense that from here on, in the program there are guidelines, but it gets to be more of a personal adventure with some detective work to see what works best for my body.

**Radiant Life **

  • Lovely 9 day vacation
  • Cooler weather for 9 days
  • Biking and taking a couple of swims
  • Picking wildflowers
  • Taking photos of everything
  • No problems with the family cabin where we stayed. It has been vacant for 2 years.
  • Visited a cute town where my kids found an oil and vinegar tasting shop. Loads of fun smelling and tasting the various wares. Selected a lemon-flavored olive oil and an assortment of fruit-flavored vinegars. Spent next few days having fun with different salads and dressings.
  • Went to small farmer's market and bought wonderful all natural wheat bread and blueberry bread. The seller grinds her own wheat berries. The bread was great.
Hi All,

Had a lovely drama-free vacation. What a difference RR has made in my life! While we didn't vacation with my in-laws, we did vacation with both my daughters' boyfriends, who we had only met in passing. Additionally it was a 14-hour car ride each way. So it was a vacation with a few challenges.

We vacationed at my in-law's rustic cabin. My Dh hadn't been there in 2 years and I hadn't been there in 5. I stopped going as I always had a terrible time.

This trip was so different. My Dh husband would do things that I could recall would drive me crazy in the past. This time I was so calm and understanding. I also remembered that we used to eat dinner each night at 9 PM and eat all kinds of sweet breads for breakfast. No wonder I was miserable.

I used to hate the long drive. I would gorge on junk. then be so sleepy and end the trip with an upset tummy. This time I ate breakfast before the drive and then ate all my meals on time. I did make lunch and dinner a little lighter so I could add in 2 extra snacks. So I didn't have any of the drowsiness or the upset tummy. Yippee..

This time I planned all the meals and most nights we ate at 5:30. I had plenty of food and browns. Only one meal was late and only one meal at a restaurant without a brown.

Generally I got up earlier than everyone and went to bed earlier. We pulled an all-night drive to get there that really messed with my schedule. Predictably I got a day four from that. I found that keeping to my normal schedule made me feel so much better.

Most mornings I made oatmeal for everyone. All were happy to wake to a pre-made breakfast. One morning I made eggs and sauteed potatoes. Then, even though the weather didn't cooperate, we modified our plans and headed out to a cute little town for sightseeing. The next morning I drove to the bakery and bought sweet bread for everyone else. Everyone was cranky and unmotivated all morning. Laughs. I didn't do that again.

Sugar wasn't a huge problem, but it was a little difficult as I was surrounded by it. At my home, sugar is either not there or at least out of my line of sight. So I ate extra fruit or fresh whole wheat bread. Both were treats for me. I did go back to eating wheat. I got the gassy bloated tummy in just 12 hours. Also got a runny nose and scratchy throat. Not sure if it was the cabin or the wheat. So will slowly remove the wheat over the next few weeks.

I kept my journal the entire time. It was a great help as I was out of my routine and it kept me grounded with what I needed to be doing.

Also I just stepped on the scale and I didn't gain a single pound. That is unheard of for me. Vacations have always, always equaled weight gain in the past. And the wonderful thing is that I never, ever felt deprived.

**Radiant Ambassadors **

Selena head shot

Wendy spent a little time in hospital recently (she's on the mend now though, thankfully!)

This is what she posted to the ambassadors list on her return:

"He (my doctor) gave me my instructions for meds and self care at home and then asked if there was anything else. I handed him SARP and before I could say anything he said, "Boy do I need this!" Turns out HE is a sugar addict. I gave him an RR card along with the book and briefly told him how the program changed my life. He shared a little bit, too, which doctors usually don't do. He seemed very interested and grateful for the book!

Also, in all fairness, I wanted to post that although the hospital's liquid menu was poor, the other menus had many excellent, healthy choices and the food I ordered from them was prepared well and delicious. I am investigating how I might be a part of the solution by finding and suggesting different choices on their liquid menu. Many thanks to this list for helping me come prepared for such interactions".

Wowsers! How cool is that!

If you want some ideas on how to talk about Radiant Recovery then come on over to the Ambassadors list!

**How I Found Radiant Recovery **

My name is Ilea and I am new to the whole program. You will find me on the breakfast forum and today is Day 2 for me. I grew up being told that we were all hypoglycemic and was diagnosed with fibromyalgia at 16, so I am very tuned in to how my body is feeling. It is like magic to see Dr. Kathleen's information about my biochemistry come alive in reality in just one day.

I am looking forward to learning more about the resources that are available to me and getting to know everyone!

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

CM Response CM Response Cream Joint Response 360

OK, next I want to share some about our Joint Response products. Kathleen was first introduced to these a number of years ago at the national Golden Retriever Dog show when it was held in Albuquerque.

At that point in time, I had recently moved to Albuquerque. My 8-year-old rottie, Pippin, had severe arthritis. We gave him Joint Response and in 3 weeks he was acting like a puppy. So we started carrying the dog stuff in the store.

We kept getting great reports. I asked the company if they were going to carry a human product. They said yes. So now we carry that. And they recently added a cream. Here are the links for the products

http://www.radiantrecoverystore.com/stpets.html

http://www.radiantrecoverystore.com/stsupps.html

As most of you know, Kathleen likes to learn about the things we carry. She started doing a fair amount of research about cetyl. Here is a pretty balanced discussion.

http://www.glucosamine-arthritis.org/arthritis/cetyl-myristoleate-arthritis.html

The article is pretty interesting...here is a clip:

The first double blind study followed two years later. Dr. H. Siemandi conducted a double blind study under the auspices of the Joint European Hospital Studies Program. There were 431 patients in the study, 106 who received cetyl myristoleate, 99 who received cetyl myristoleate, and glucosamine, sea cucumber, and hydrolyzed cartilage and 226 who received a placebo. Clinical assessment included radiological test and other studies. Results were 63% improvement for the cetyl myristoleate group, 87% for the cetyl myristoleate plus glucosamine group and 15% for the placebo group.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

**Radiant Kitchen **

Sweet Potato Waffles (or Pancakes)

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 pound sweet potatoes, peeled, cooked and mashed (about 3/4 cup)
  • 1 1/2 tsp. oil
  • 1 large egg white, lightly beaten
  • 3/4 cup milk (cow, soy, oat)
  • 1/2 cup brown rice flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt (optional)

Directions:

Preheat waffle iron.

Combine the cooked sweet potato, oil, egg white and milk in a large bowl and beat until well blended. Add flour, baking powder and salt and beat until smooth.

Spray hot waffle iron with non-stick cooking spray. Cook waffles according to manufacturer's instructions using 3/4 c mix per waffle.

Serve with yogurt, fresh fruit, fruit compote or unsweetened applesauce.

If making pancakes, heat griddle until a sprinkle of water dances on griddle. Drop 1/4 cup batter on griddle. Cook until bubbles form on surface (about 3 minutes). Flip and cook on other side until golden brown.

Both waffles and pancakes can be frozen and reheated later.

**Our Online Groups **

On the Radiant Step 5 list we talk about the importance of browns, about the different grains available - how to choose, how to cook, how to serve. We explore why for some of us wheat may not be the best alternative or not a good one. Step 5 can be exciting and you can learn how to introduce new things to resistant family members. We also call it the 'coming out' step since it's at this step that when we 'eat out' we may seem different to those not familiar with our program.

**OMG I Am GAINING Weight!!! **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I know that you know I do get letters from people who are very upset when they start the program and gain some weight. Usually, these are folks who have been doing low carb or no carb. Or they are folks who were skipping breakfast as a way to try to compensate for the rest of the day. They are used to a *diet* that promises pounds lost in 30 days and so coming here is a huge shock.

And then, even worse, we won't let you talk weight loss talk early on. We say, *bring it to YLD.* And even there we say, *do the steps first*....we just refuse to talk weight loss talk. And, of course, this is very frustrating and very scary if you define yourself in terms of how much you weigh. And it is disorienting to say the least.

So every once in a while, I like to address this issue.

There are 411 MILLION sites that talk about weight loss. Anyone who wants to explore weight loss has LOTS of options. And then there is Radiant Recovery® hanging in there saying, let's go underneath. Let's give you something that no one else can. Let's balance your brain and your body, heal the reason you put on weight in the first place, get you fit, heal the feelings, help you step outside the cultural swirl of defining yourself in terms of pounds, and then let's get you to the weight that is right for you.

The difference is, the weight loss comes at the end. We do the healing first. Now, the hard part is that you have to trust in order to do it. And you might have to tolerate some weight gain in the beginning. But actually there is more to the story. Because you actually don't have to gain weight if you are willing to really pay attention and learn the skills. Or maybe you gain a little, and then it slides off on step 6.

This week an email came through announcing that someone had quit the step 3 list. Yes, I do get emails of all the flow, LOL. And this was someone I knew had been working diligently so it surprised me. I wrote her and said, *what is happening?* She wrote back and shared that she was on step 5 and had gained 6 pounds in 6 months and felt out of control and just couldn't risk gaining more.

I totally got that the fear was real, but something in me said to gather more information. I asked her to share 4 days of her journal. She did and she was open, genuinely open to having my feedback. I will share what I wrote back to her. But I wanted to share with you something else I learned that I think is really, really important.

Sometimes, there are little quirky variables lurking under the surface that shape feelings, or more importantly distort them. A glass of wine every night could be just enough sugar to alter your filter about *working* or weight. A tiny thing and it would make total sense to just chuck it since it is not working.

So, moral of this story, ask for help and listen...the level of expertise in this community is unmatched. And all of it is there in your service.

Here is my reply. It is one of the famous, or perhaps infamous, *direct* replies. (smile). It wasn't the carbs. What a gift for all of us.

Radiant Recovery® includes weight loss, but focuses on learning on stability skills first. I am going to offer you some perspective and see if it helps.

Your brain is telling you that you are on step 5, you have done all this work, you have a good sense of knowing how to calculate protein, you are paying attention, you eat veggies, you exercise and it makes no sense that you are gaining weight. And you are terrified about that.

When I looked at your journal I saw a slightly different picture. Your protein amounts range from 30 grams to 48 grams per meal, you have cake instead of a potato, you have wine most nights, you don't really have veggies and you are very light on good carbs.

Your brain will say, OMG I have gained a pound a month, this is NOT the right program for me, they won't let me talk about weight loss...I am doing all this work...I am spending money and I am gaining weight!!! Somehow, your brain is not connecting to the actual data.

You need about 23 grams of protein per meal, if you have 30 - 48, you will gain weight.
If you don't eat enough, you will not lose weight.
If you do not eat more veggies, you will not lose weight.
You are having wine {which is liquid sugar every day].

The pound a month is the wine and the protein basically.

With all the work you have done, if you take out the wine, cut your protein, eat more veggies and get some solid browns, you will lose weight. And you will feel terrific. My suggestion is that you go back to step three and learn what step three can be at its best.

Now those recommendations are generally what comes in YLD after you are steady. Most people are not ready to do what it takes sooner. I feel your frustration. My hunch is that the wine is a big factor...it creates the *edge* that means all that work seems for naught.

Hope this helps.
