Hi {!firstname_fix}

Here is the town in Maine. It looks just like it did in 1953 when we would go for the summer. Island life continues at the speed of granite. The island is made of granite. Here is the view off the deck. The tide and the fog come in and go out. There are two seagulls who come visit every year. They wait for my SIL to arrive and then show up for the duration. This is life on the other side of New Mexico. We eat lobster that is pulled from the sea that day. And I wear socks that are made with wool from the sheep that the landlords own. And in the evening, everything is so still you can hear the buoys clanging way out in the bay.

These classes will begin Wednesday, August 28, 2013. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Using Radiant Resources (1 week) - is a free orientation for those of you who are brand new and would like to find your way around town. Come sit on the top of our double-decker bus for a guided tour. And even if you are not brand new, this is a really fun class to reconnect with all the treats of the community.

Step 3

Step 3 (2 weeks) - is one of our core classes. This is a skill-based class. If you want to learn the baby steps of a successful step 3, come join us. This class is ALWAYS fun.

These classes will begin Wednesday, September 4, 2013. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Brain Chemistry Serotonin (2 weeks) - is the other of our most popular classes. It helps you make sense of why the potato works, why you have a problem in the winter and how Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can play into this. If you munch in your mind, if you are depressed or edgy or feel sad, this is the class for you.
Radiant Deep Healing (2 weeks) - is a new class designed to give you understanding of the special emotional world of the sugar-sensitive person. You will look at how childhood experiences combine with your special brains to create a unique way of coping. This will help you understand why doing the food has such an impact on healing emotions You will learn to feel emotionally safe and how to work with feelings as they come up. This is NEW class design and includes material I have not presented before. You MUST have been on a solid step 3 for at least 3 months in order to take this class.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

**Testimonial of the Week **

Hi- Journaling still seems to be a joy I never thought I would look forward to. I am learning something new every day. It makes me laugh at how afraid I used to be of it, and when I had done this program in the past I always tried to skip over it. Explains why I could never be truly successful with my steps.

I am overjoyed that I am experiencing some sort of healing daily. I feel very present in my body without hating how I look, thoughts I have or other people. I am feeling the shift towards step 3 and am finding that I automatically pick better foods (good proteins and browns) at lunch and dinner as well.

I am allowing my body and brain to nudge me when it is time to leave this group. Not yet.....but soon, I think.

Laura

I think I just wanted to share because it is so different to how I used to be in the world. Planning rather than winging it. Presenting rather than hiding. Taking the lead rather than going with what everyone else thinks. Taking the time for a nap rather than just dozing off.

I just adore this program!!!

Selena,

I've been pondering on your post.

This morning I was stopped in my tracks by thoughts of how much I take care of myself now. Can you pass the tissues, because this whole subject makes me a little emotional.

Adore this programme? My goodness, where do I start!?! When I look into my children's eyes, I can feel my heart swell, because I couldn't 'do it' (stop eating sugar) for 'them' which used to eat me up inside and take me deeper into addiction.

Oooooosh!!! It's awesomely awesome!

I loved reading your post too, Selena, and your response, Steph. Selena that is exactly it, and linking in with my posts on children what you said is key: taking the lead rather than what everyone thinks. I used to have that when I was much younger (once I left home and went to Uni) and I love that I, too, am getting it back now. I 'forgot' all that for so long, so thank you for reminding me of changes that can and are being made!!

**How I Found Radiant Recovery **

Hello, I'm on step one, though slowly incorporating some other steps. Ever since I can remember I have thought myself 'mad'. Why, why, why couldn't I keep to a diet, stop my anger outbursts, kept crying a lot? It all came to a head recently. I was trying out the 5:2 diet but after about the third reduced-calorie day, I started eating loads of sugar. Of course now I know that low blood sugar coupled with depriving myself of my emotional crutch, made me crash. I was diagnosed with depression and reluctant to start Prozac, I started googling when I came across, PNP. It was me, totally, even the stationery thing! So that's why I have never been able to keep a box of chocolates in the house. Or the times I did lose weight in my life, I turned to drink etc. I'm committed to recovering from my addiction to sugar, glad to meet you all.

I'm from Battle, in the south of England, by the way, am 46, have a 23 yr old and a 18 month old. I am doing the parenting thing alone (not by choice) and am determined to rise out of the ashes a better more complete me.

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

I think you will love the new, revised Safe Place CD. It has a special introduction, and is licensed to use the Kolbialka Bolero we all love so much. It is timed for 20 minutes so is ideal for your mediation time.

This CD is the the first in a series of meditation tapes. It is the ground for all the work of stilling the mind and opening your heart to healing.

Kathleen has been using this meditation with her clients for more than 25 years. She uses it as the center of her own spiritual practice. Like her food program, it is deceptively simple. Kathleen takes her listeners to a place of safety.

Use this CD over and over to train a response that is immediate and fully relaxed. Teach your deepest self to be quiet and still. Open your heart to the light and your life will change.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

**Radiant Kitchen **

I made this with tiny Maine blueberries and thought you would love it.

Fruit Cobbler

There’s a fruit cobbler recipe I have made for years that I made sugar-free tonight for the first time. It’s great! I used apples and strawberries, but you can use anything, really. If you’re using something like canned peaches (in natural fruit juice of course), you can use it as is. Tonight I sautéed apple slices in a bit of butter and cinnamon and nutmeg until they were a bit soft. Then added a handful of strawberries, sliced.

Put fruit in the bottom of a glass pie dish.

In a bowl, cream 1/2 cup butter and about 2/3 cup apple butter. Add 1 egg, 1 cup flour (can use whole wheat or whole-wheat pastry), 1 tsp. baking powder and mix well. Glop this on top of the fruit in several places and spread to cover.

Bake at 350 degrees fahrenheit for about a half an hour. Delicious with whipped cream.

This recipe was contributed by Sue Ann from the Radiant Recovery Community Forum.

We have a new portal for the Conversations program. Come check it out here.

I hope you peeked at the transcripts to see what they talked about while I was gone LOL. The really, really fun part is that mostly we talk about the article from the newsletter. Sometimes not, mostly yes. But the most astounding thing is that whatever the conversation starts as, it shifts into what people most need to hear. It is like having cozy tea together, or like sitting by the sea chatting about things that fill us up. We don't talk about the food, we talk about hopes and dreams.

**Our Online Groups **

Have you been sitting on the couch a lot, suffering from being inside too much, and thinking about a wee bit of movement? We would love to have you join us in exploring new ways of moving on the Movement List. Even if you can only walk to the end of the driveway, you are welcome. We have a new team to support you and we are planning LOTS of fun.

The Movement list is for people who want to start moving again and to baby step into a regular exercise program. If you can remember how much fun it was to move when you were a child and you've lost that, the Movement list is the perfect place for you. And, if you don't remember, we'll help you rediscover it. There are some wonderful people on the list who will share their stories and help you explore different options to form a movement plan that works for you.. We are enthusiastic about our own exercise, but we also understand first hand how hard it was to start and to baby step into regular movement. It's a great list; come join us.

Or come to the group page to find the one that will best support your program: http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm

**The Mystery of Joy Dots **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I know that many of you have heard the term *joy dots* being talked about in the community. You may have seen people posting their *joys* and thought it was a pleasant exercise, but you really had no context. I thought it would be fun if we talked some about the idea. THis will let you share in the excitement they bring us.

So here is the back story. Our depression list was the very first list we ever started in the community. For many years, it was a pretty grim place. People came in and shared about being depressed. It kinda went round and round and round. As people did the food, they usually left the list and joined the community in other places.

A few years ago I was having a conversation with one of the women on the list about her being stuck. She was upset by the fact that she had been doing step 3 for years and could not get past it. She was pretty negative and grim. One day I challenged her to just write three things that she noticed during the day that gave her joy. I think this idea came out of the class I was teaching about the amygdala - the center of the brain that processes primal emotions like fear, anger and joy.

At any rate, she agreed to do it. Later she admitted to me that she thought it was a really stupid idea and she only agreed to prove me wrong. She just started tacking three sentences on the bottom of her posts. *I noticed the flowers blooming in the garden* *I liked how the light was shining on the trees.* *There were dew drops on the spider web.* *My shake was yummy this morning.* They were simple declaratives and caught a joy moment. We called them *joy dots.* They were interesting, pleasant and no one really noticed them.

Some time passed and one day I said, *Can you move those joy dots up to the top of your posts?* She did. And something very strange happened. Her tone changed. She was no longer grim. And she started looking at things in a different way.

And then something even stranger happened. Other people on the list started doing the same thing. Joy dots first. And the list woke up. The energy shifted. Grim faded. The list started laughing. The members started connecting to each other. Now we call the depression list, the joy list.

If you think it is silly, just try it. See what happens.
