October 21, 2013

Hi {!firstname_fix}

It has been a week of settling in. My body is just getting back in synch with time. I am waking at 5 AM rather than 3 AM, so that is helpful. I think we have all spent a week just kinda reflecting on all that happened. Salisbury was good, Ranch was great and the connections are a joy. We do have dates for both ranches set, so if you want to mark your calendar, US Ranch will be the first weekend in May, 2014 and Euro Ranch will be the first weekend in October, 2014

I am laughing at Steph's comments in the YLD section that *we colored while Kathleen was talking* (smile)...I think a little context will help here. I presented the written material for the context of Ranch in a coloring book format. I had tried this last May here at Ranch and was floored at how it enhanced learning. People could remember and reflect on the material in a whole different way. I am intrigued by this process. And am planning some new classes that will have a workbook attached for the material. I know you will be excited too.

These classes will begin Wednesday, October 23, 2013. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Using Radiant Resources (1 week) - is a free orientation for those of you who are brand new and would like to find your way around town. Come sit on the top of our double-decker bus for a guided tour. And even if you are not brand new, this is a really fun class to reconnect with all the treats of the community.

Step 3

Step 3 (2 weeks) - is one of our core classes. This is a skill-based class. If you want to learn the baby steps of a successful step 3, come join us. This class is ALWAYS fun.

I am revising the schedule for the rest of the fall and will post it on the classes page by Wednesday and then get it into next week's newsletter. I want to update my offerings to fit where I hear many of you going.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

Doing the food creates a steady bowl to hold your life experience. As it fills, the connection deepens inside and outside.

**Testimonial of the Week **

Mosaic is responding to someone who asked if she should join the step one list or take the step one class. I loved her answer.

Could consider both. Call by step one list and look forwards to class.

I had problems with the word slow LOL... but in actual fact my slower turned out faster in the end... I probably would have floundered about far more.

I found that 'slow' for me meant not so much timewise ( although it's true I did take a far more scenic path) but attentive.... taking the time and noticing, getting the focus there, looking.

Oh and journaling is my biggest time saver ever, funny how that turned out. Really frees me up.

Do let us know how you are liking breakfast.

**Radiant Ambassadors **

Selena head shot

Do you remember when I wrote to the Prime Minister about sugar sensitivity? And then my letter was passed between various governmental departments for a while?

Well... it ended up on the desk of the Commissioning and Service Development Manager for Obesity and Physical Activity in our local area (which covers approximately 250,000).

And he took me up on my suggestion of a meeting to discuss my story, but also the impact of unhealed sugar sensitivity on communities at large. We talked for a full hour about the initiatives the government are taking to combat obesity, and I told him all about what happened to me and that a wonky biochemistry is more detrimental than obesity per se.

Anyhow, the upshot is that I have been invited to attend an upcoming 'Healthy Weight Consultation Event' which includes local delegates from all health fields. Guess who will be wearing their Radiant Recovery top that day??

I will let you know how it goes!

**How I Found Radiant Recovery **

My name is Natalie and I'm from California. I found Potatoes Not Prozac in the library while looking for another book. I immediately ordered the Kindle book from Amazon, as well as the hardcopy version of The Sugar Addicts Total Recovery Program. I've been trying to do Step 1 since mid-March but have only just begun doing it correctly and regularly over the last week or so.

I'm not counting days "on plan" because I feel like that puts me in a "make or break" situation where making a mistake means failure. Instead of looking at this program as an endpoint, I'm focusing on the journey so that the stakes don't freak me out so much.

As for this class, I hope to be less overwhelmed by all the information on the website and be more confident of where I need to be looking for resources based on my progress.

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

I think you will love the Safe Place CD. It has a special introduction, and is licensed to use the Kolbialka Bolero we all love so much. It is timed for 20 minutes so is ideal for your mediation time.

This CD is the the first in a series of meditation tapes. It is the ground for all the work of stilling the mind and opening your heart to healing.

Kathleen has been using this meditation with her clients for more than 25 years. She uses it as the center of her own spiritual practice. Like her food program, it is deceptively simple. Kathleen takes her listeners to a place of safety.

Use this CD over and over to train a response that is immediate and fully relaxed. Teach your deepest self to be quiet and still. Open your heart to the light and your life will change.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

**Radiant Kitchen **

A number of us have been talking about the joys of green smoothies. I recently read a book by Victoria Boutenko called Green Smoothie Revolution: The Radical Leap Towards Natural Health . It really got my attention. I know that getting enough (or even some veggies) has been a real problem for many of us. Victoria talks about some very interesting ideas of the power of “drinking” your greens. She speaks of how nasty the smoothies were until she started adding fruit to them. Then they were delicious. I was not sure how this would work with our commitment to cut way back on fruits so I started exploring. I found that the smoothies were delicious with way less than she was suggesting, so many of us started to play with making different smoothies.

I think we were all kinda taken aback by how good these drinks made us feel.

At Euroranch we started sharing and discovered that we were all having the same experience. I am always cautious about “new” things that will get us all excited and divert us from the more boring process of just doing the food. Ironically the smoothies seem to add to the ease of “doing the food”. Rather than piling on the veggies, which can be a bit daunting, having a cup of green brew before lunch and dinner seems very doable.

We are trading green recipes on Facebook but here is what I am using:

  • 2 leaves dinosaur kale
  • a handful of dandelion greens
  • a handful of radicchio
  • 2 collard greens leaves
  • 5 frozen cherries
  • 1/2 an apple
  • 1/2 a frozen banana
  • 20 ounces of cold water
I blend it with my Vitamix . I change out the green based on whatever my little store has or what they have at the farmers market.

The fruit does not make me crave, nor want more. This is just what Victoria says will happen. You know I read a lot...lots of books, lots of articles...these two books simply blew me away. See what you think.

**Radiant YLD **

I'm an introvert and I am still processing everything that happened at Euroranch. It was an amazing experience. Here are a few thoughts, memories and joys.......

  • We coloured in while Kathleen was talking as that helps us to remember
  • Learning to do the steps is like learning to play an instrument, you can't just pick one up and play straight away
  • Let go and let the program do the work
  • I laughed so much my cheeks hurt
  • Feeling of belonging
  • Heartfelt sharing
  • Knowing I can ask for help
  • My name badge with stickers on :)
  • Veggie smoothies
  • Making the process joyful
  • Understanding the pain
  • Reclaiming our bodies
Wow, so much learning, I'm looking forward to seeing it unfold!

**Our Online Groups **

Have you been sitting on the couch a lot, suffering from being inside too much, and thinking about a wee bit of movement? We would love to have you join us in exploring new ways of moving on the Movement List. Even if you can only walk to the end of the driveway, you are welcome. We have a new team to support you and we are planning LOTS of fun.

The Movement list is for people who want to start moving again and to baby step into a regular exercise program. If you can remember how much fun it was to move when you were a child and you've lost that, the Movement list is the perfect place for you. And, if you don't remember, we'll help you rediscover it. There are some wonderful people on the list who will share their stories and help you explore different options to form a movement plan that works for you.. We are enthusiastic about our own exercise, but we also understand first hand how hard it was to start and to baby step into regular movement. It's a great list; come join us.

Or come to the group page to find the one that will best support your program: http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm

**Change Leaping Ahead **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I am repeating this article because I think it is VERY relevant for those of us who were at ranch (smile)... we certainly got a dose of *disequilibrium*... I think it will be helpful.

I know that many of you have made some very powerful changes in the last few months. I have some thoughts that might offer some helpful insight for you.

I think it is as if suddenly one part of you, either your emotional self or you thinking self, or even your physical self makes some kind of leap forward. Like BAM! That part goes leaping ahead. And the rest remains behind in the dust. The leap in one creates disequilibrium in the whole. And you end up feeling really, really tired.

It is confusing because you may feel like things are good; it makes no sense that you would all of a sudden feel such fatigue. But it isn’t really tiredness, it is actually a pull to be quiet, to concentrate, to remain still to let yourself catch up and create harmony in a new balance. And sometimes, you don’t realize this, you don’t heed it.

Many of you have heard me say, “I think your enthusiasm is running ahead of your brain’s ability to catch up.” This is the same kind of thing. Your growth is running ahead of your assimilation. You need to catch up, you need to rest to assimilate and the parts need to get balanced.

And perhaps, most significantly, you may have to adjust your food.

I think many of us discovered this in the last few months when we changed how we were exercising. What we had been eating was no longer enough. And needing to eat more to be balanced was very disconcerting. It touched all those old feelings of wanting to “restrict” lest we GAIN WEIGHT. We were shocked at how embedded those feelings were.

But we talked about it, and on some level, we totally got the issue of creating harmony. And that changing, increasing our food would reestablish a state of equilibrium that had been broken; it impelled us to a new level of inner awareness. Those who had scoffed at or forgotten the value of the journal found themselves in need of that tool. Going back to it with this new awareness was profound.

The journal became the way to discover what we needed, how much, when. We were looking not only at “best browns” but “best proteins,” “best fats.” We started to learn to determine for each body at this time, exactly, given our personal equation, the level of activity, the level of brain stress, the need to recuperate, just what was needed now at this point in time.

And this knowing emerged about what we thought was fatigue was instead something of a spiritual crisis, for want of a better description. Now I see that it is a reorganization need, a call to use our skills to know positively and precisely what is out of order, why it got disturbed, and what we need to do to put it back together into harmony.

Who would have ever though that “doing the food” could mean such a process!
