December 2, 2013

Hi {!firstname_fix}

bosque I spent an afternoon down at the Bosque Del Apache. It is a little hard to describe. I will say more in the article because the experience was so moving, life changing in fact. We do this every year 'round my birthday. It is about New Mexico and the sky and the sound of the birds.

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays...a time of gratitude for the things I love in my life. David and I made a chicken and mashed potatoes and squash and such. We watched a football game and just enjoyed the fact that we live in the same town and we like being with one another. It was pleasant and fun. And the dogs got to lick the plates, LOL.

I love that Chanukah is here now as well. LIghts, you know how I feel about the message of hope that comes with the light still burning.

We will continue with our core classes...and I will do the dopamine class for all you little drama puppies who want to create spark without drama over the holiday LOL.

These classes will begin Wednesday, December 4, 2013. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Step 1

Step 1 (2 weeks) - is our foundation class to get you started. Learn all four parts of step 1 in a structured way. Learn how to progress through them with enjoyment. Let us support getting your program off to a fabulous start.
Dopamine (2 weeks) - a look at sugar sensitivity and dopamine. Learn about the fourth leg of the story and see if this is your missing piece. It's a great class to take at this time of year too. (smile)

This class will begin Wednesday, December 11, 2013. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Step 2

Step 2: Introduction (2 weeks) - will teach you the basics of journaling. The class will give you step by step instructions in how to record your food and feelings in a way that gets you excited.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

**Testimonial of the Week **

I now have my father asking me permission before he will offer my daughters anything. Tonite Kayla had a band concert. My parents came along. My father wanted to feed Lindsey lifesavers - first he asked me, "Can I offer her a lifesaver?" And before I could answer my Mom said, "No." I reminded him Lindsey doesn't do peppermint so it wasn't an issue. After the concert I could feel the let's go for ice cream vibe - but the words were not spoken. Isn't it weird how I heard them though. Sure enough my father called later to say, "You know I would have taken everyone for ice cream but I know you don't want your children eating that!" I had to reassure him that his attending the concert was a big treat - we didn't need ice cream also!

**Radiant Life **

Bon Jour from the festival city of Edinburgh Lads.

Wife #1 and I went visiting friends of 25 years for dinner at their house last night.

We've been doing this 2 or 3 times a year all throughout our friendship. Turn and turn about. This was a first at their place after a bit of a hiatus due to bereavement, travel and some general busyness.

The last time we hosted. The sugar and whites were in my control. No coming out to yet another fad diet required.

We've shared kids of similar ages and the tribulations and joys that brings. Also major life events like losing our parents to age and mutual close friends to cancer, a redundancy, retraining for a new career, health issues and life's ups and downs haves all been dissected at these grown-up dinners.

The point of this post is that I shared my RR food requirements by email with them at the beginning of the week. They know I don't drink and have taken this in their hosting stride without a blink over the decades.

last night my no whites, no sugar request was met with wonderful kitchen, table, shopping, garden and menu prep grace and skill on their part.

He checked with me if maple syrup in the gravy was ok by text during the week. I said no. Result; very tasty gravy with a side jug of maple syrup for those who wanted to add it.

Menu was;

Seafood cocktail of crab, lobster and shrimp with vinaigrette greens and samphire

Shoulder of spiced pulled pork

Mixed roast veg including beetroot, carrot, potato, and beans, purple sprouting broc (all self allotment grown) & gravy

Banana, berry, peach, fresh grated coconut & lime compote set as a jelly with whipped cream. (Quite naturally sweet but no added sugar and a small serving in a nice dish worked out just fine for me)

There was wine for those who did and mineral water and a cold herbal tea cocktaily number for me with a decaf to finish.

They also had the most brilliant playlist - The Kinks, The Clash, Iggy, Scottish & Irish folk, just enough Jazz, Allison Kraus, emmy lou, Van the man, Beatles, Stones, etc -stuff us over 50 year olds appreciate and at just the right volume.

They had flowers from their allotment that really added to the ambience (I mention these cos Pre RR I just didn't notice small details like this. At all. Black and white tv view of life didn't allow me to. I do so appreciate the "colour" my radiant awareness now adds.

We were hosted with finesse, well fed, I had my food needs met, had a truly great fun night. I felt a part of and not apart from and it was all no big deal on anyone's part really. It was easy. Comfortable. Warm. Friendly.

Have I enthused and praised being steady on the food and growing slowly through the steps enough here? There is no other reason than this that I had the kind of night I did than arriving at RR and reluctantly following the program as written.

This works. In ways I wasn't expecting it to, like last night, more and more often just lately.

There are big obvious changes since I first got here. I'm not depressed, I'm not obsessed with food, not ferociously night-time grazing and am not very very over weight any more. Long may that continue. I like all these changes. A lot.

The benefits of being SS in RR are well worth the effort I'm finding.

Hope your Sunday mornings are going well for you all.

Richie

**How I Found Radiant Recovery **

Isn't it funny that we used to think we had to be hungry to be losing weight and be healthy? That is definitely definitely definitely not the way to long term sustained recovery and weight loss. Plus I hate to feel hungry. :)

I found the books because I had quit smoking and transferred my addictions to sugar. I was quite aware of my addictive behaviour when I was a smoker so I could see what I was doing with sugar (well sugar and fat together usually) and then googled sugar addiction and came across Potatoes not Prozac that way. That must have been in 2005/2006, and I knew that book was written for me. And sure enough, every word about recovery came true, and 7 years later I'm still sugar free and a totally different person….well, more like all the best bits of the before me without all the crazy other bits. ;)

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

I just wanted to talk about our Prime membership service. I am glad you are liking it. If you glossed over it, come see what you are missing.

PRIME status means that you will receive a preferred price on many of the items we carry in our store. The store will offer many items at two prices, a regular price and a PRIME price (right below, in red). The PRIME price is close to 10% off a large number of the items we carry. Not all items have a PRIME price. If you have an "ACTIVE" subscription (not on hold or canceled), you will qualify for the PRIME prices at any time you make a purchase. You will also notice that we have lowered some subscription prices as well. If you select the PRIME price and are not an ACTIVE subscriber, you will be charged the regular price at the time your order is processed. The PRIME member will not need to remember a discount code or password to get the benefits of being a subscriber/PRIME member.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

**Radiant Kitchen **

Chanukah is here! So, here are two delicious latke recipes from our very own Gail.

Traditional Latkes

  • 4 medium potatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 T flour ( any kind, I use Kathleen's baking mix)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Dash of pepper
  • 1 tsp baking powder ( omit with Kathleen's baking mix)
  • Oil for frying
  1. Grate potatoes, skin and all. I usually use a lighter skin potato like red bliss and I sometimes throw them in the food processor.
  2. Grate the onion.
  3. Squeeze the extra moisture out of the potato and onion.
  4. Combine all other ingredients, mix well.
  5. Heat oil in medium frying pan, drop by tablespoons, and fry until bottom is golden brown. Flip and brown other side. Drain on paper towels.
  6. Serve with applesauce or sour cream.

Sweet Potato Latkes

This recipe I have played with some. They don't usually come out as crispy.
  • 2 sweet potatoes
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 T flour (any kind)
  • Cinnamon to taste
  • Dash of salt
  1. Peel and shred the potatoes. I guess you could leave the skin on, but we don't. Squeeze the extra liquid out.
  2. Combine all other ingredients, mix well.
  3. Heat oil in medium frying pan, drop by tablespoons, and fry until bottom is golden brown. Flip and brown other side. Drain on paper towels.

**Our Online Groups **

The Radiant Step One list is a great place to learn the nuances of breakfast, build a strong foundation for the rest of the steps, and find how helpful it is to share our journey with others. It is great for new people and those who have been on the program a long time. Sharing helps everyone.

The awesome thing is we all, Step 1 or Step 7, eat breakfast every single day. How cool is that?

**So What About Cravings **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I have been reading a lot of posts on the issue of what to do with cravings and I thought It might help to say a little more....

Cravings come from beta endorphin withdrawal. If you had something sweet, when it wears off, you will crave. If you have a big event that spikes beta endorphin (a fight, a joy, a lot of sex, dancing all night, getting a job, not getting a job), when it wears off you will have cravings.

Sometimes the *wearing off* effect takes 4 days, so you do not make a connection between let down and craving.

So the key question, is what to do when you have them ....

First of all, entertain the idea that it is possible to have a craving and not *do* anything.

Now, when you are just starting out, this is hard. Not doing anything is called impulse control. If you have low serotonin, you may not have much impulse control, so you get a craving and you do something right away. One strategy is to simply work the steps and allow your biochemistry to heal and improve your impulse control. Another strategy is to start right away and learn to recognize this phenomenon and simply practice waiting. Cravings by nature are simply your brain calling. If you start to get antsy and scared, they call more. If you do something else, you can override the call.

So, bottom line, sort out ways to reduce the BE priming - this means having your sweets with meals or always with protein. This cuts down the *hit* effect.

Use your journal to mark when to expect the whispers or yelling to come...Mark 4 days down the road when you have a BE spike. Being prepared for the edginess helps.

Do the food. When you get to step 7, cravings go a way.

Kathleen
Ok this is great Kathleen. I got it till I got to the last sentence:

"Do the food. When you get to step 7, cravings go away"

Could you or someone else elaborate on this a little. I thought you said cravings are caused not only by food, but by life also. Actually you wrote that cravings are due to BE-withdrawal, so are you saying that once we're on step 7 we learn to avoid BE spikes, hence no cravings? Or we manage the withdrawal better? What I'm noticing is I'm trying to avoid spiking because I'm noticing the effects it has on my body, but sometimes it's impossible to avoid spikes. I see them too late and that's when I get cravings. I'm sorry I'm a bit puzzled with what comes after step 7. It sounds like the step 7 is somehow magical and all the bad things go away and I feel disappointed because it's not the case in my life. What I do see is that I start to manage things better, I have a better control over things, I have choices, but the things I've struggled with, I still have them in my life. I just manage them better.

Anyway, I just got a little confused by the last sentence.

Thank you for this clarification .

Sure :-) As your brain heals, the beta endorphin receptors don't scream so much.

If *life* creates a spike, you have skills to not react in the same way. So it is a blip not a flood.

The more you heal, the more you up the normal level of beta endorphin. Let me see if I can describe this...

When you start, you have low level BE. Imagine it at a 2 out of 10. Something happens that spikes it to an 8. So when it drops, you have a 6 point gap with big screaming and big fallout craving.

Over time, you heal. Now your normal BE runs at 7. Something spikes it to an 8. It drops back to a 7. The BE receptors say, Um, did you notice that, and you laugh with them.

Make sense?

Kathleen
