October 1, 2017

Hi, {!firstname_fix},
We have had a LOT of rain this past week. This means all the trees and plants are singing with joy. My front yard is mostly dirt and it is former riverbed dirt which means it is actually more like fine clay dirt. When it gets wet, it becomes *slip* which is what is used in pottery making. Dogs seem to love the feeling of sliding around in slip and pacing around in the mud to make holes and squish their feet in the water in the holes. I decided to reframe my normal feelings to this (your basic horror) and simply think of them as loving spa treatments. I made them stay outside most days.  When it dries into clay they are like clay figures walking around like ghosts.  However, if brushed, it does come off.

It is a spiritual practice for me to not be alarmed by the grit that comes in with them, and simply vacuum it up. There could be worse ways to enlightenment, LOL.

We have started a major task of cleaning house in the community. No one signed up for the Clutter Class so I decided to use the time to declutter here. I am taking down groups that are no longer being used so we can focus on what is interesting you the most.  I have compiled all the testimonials from all 726 newsletters and will put them together for you as a resource. Reading them together made me realize that we have in fact created a culture of empowerment. This is a place for healing and that what I dreamed of when I started is now a living, working reality. It is pretty wonderful to experience.

By the way, we have 2 slots left for Euroranch. This year's program will be a unique combination of looking at brain chemistry and empowerment and life changes for empowerment. It is not for newcomers :) but if you have been to Ranch before and want an incredible follow up, this is the option for you.

 Support for Your Program
Signature Consultation with Kathleen

I am introducing a new support option for you. I had a new person ask me about coming to EuroRanch. She is just starting the program and wanted to know the best way to immerse herself. Should she spend the money to come to ranch or were there other options. I told her that I could put together a little package that would give her way more specific program guidance for her as a newcomer. She was really excited, and I thought, hmm, maybe this is something that the rest of you might like.

It includes:
  • A one hour individual assessment with me including a phone session, a written review and a journal assessment.
  • A membership in the YLD program
  • A ninety day (12 week) intensive individual coaching in the apprentice program.

Radiant Coaching

Coaching is individualized support directly from Kathleen. We have an apprentice coaching group to work on Steps 1-3. Everyone gets individualized attention suited to where she or he is in the process. The commitment is for 2 week intervals.

Skilled coaching is for those who are steady on at least step three and really want to take their program deeper. We work with Journaling and life changes. This is a process for those who are highly motivated about their programs. The people who are in the skilled coaching LOVE what we are doing together.

The fee for individual coaching from Kathleen is $20 a week billed in 2 week intervals.

Classes

This class will start, Wednesday, October 4th

Learning the Skills of Step One

This is a free class. It is conducted right in the Step One Group.  If you are ready to learn all the ins and outs of getting started, now is the time to get yourself over there.
This class will start, Wednesday, October 11th

Using The Resources of the Community

This is also a free introductory class to show you around resources offered.
We will explain how the newsletter works, give you a look at the Community Forum, explain how the groups work, talk about the classes and the Weight Loss Program called Your Last Diet and anything else you might be wondering about.

As you keep your journal, you can discover that there is a direct correlation between what you are eating and how you are feeling.

Testimonial of the Week
I've been detoxed now for a little over a month, and I noticed something extraordinary this past week. In working with my clients, I am always VERY focused but never relaxed (due to a general anxiety I feel around people). This week I experienced being focused AND RELAXED, which actually allowed me to be present to them in a whole new way. It was a totally new experience for me and I've spent the week just savouring it and being amazed. It seems like such a GIFT and I don't know where it could have come from unless it's related to doing the food. Anyway, I thought I would share it here to let people know what happened. Maybe someone else has had a similar experience?

Love,
Kathy (in London)

Science Tidbits

I started putting these back in last week. Didn't hear from anyone about whether you like the Science. Can you let me know?  Did this one make sense?

 2015 Nov 5;9:399. doi: 10.3389/fnins.2015.00399. eCollection 2015.

"The persistence of associative memories linked to the rewarding properties of drugs of abuse is a core underlying feature of the addiction process. Opiate class drugs in particular, possess potent euphorigenic effects which, when linked to environmental cues, can produce drug-related "trigger" memories that may persist for lengthy periods of time, even during abstinence, in both humans, and other animals. ...
The mammalian prefrontal cortex (PFC) and basolateral nucleus of the amygdala (BLA) share important functional and anatomical connections that are involved importantly in the processing of associative memories linked to drug reward."

This article is saying that there is a cellular memory of drug use that sits in the amygdala. It lasts even after we stop using.  Remember that the amygdala is connected to everything in your brain so if something primes your amygdala, your whole brain will light up.  The article references *opiate addiction*...but remember SUGAR acts on the same pathways.

This is why HEALING your brain stops the cravings. It is also why talk therapy does not heal addiction. The amygdala isn't interested in talking, it does feeling.  :)

Radiant YLD
YLD started as the *weight loss* place, it turned into the heart of the community. I think it is because we chat every week. We chat and then we talk after on the list, so the topics deepen and evolve.

I am doing the article on YLD this week.

Come to chat, join the private list for members.

If you would like to join us in YLD, come find us here.

Radiant Living
Some of the old timers wanted to have a place to share about *refinements* and *life enhancements*. We have support for depression and cooking and fitness, but nowhere to look at *life* stuff. The logical option is Radiant Living. It is kinda the *after the food* place. If you are steady with your food, think about becoming a Living member to share in our weekly chats on life topics.

If you would like to join us in Radiant Living, come find us here.

Your Last Diet

Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I thought it might be helpful to give you a more in-depth sense of what our Your Last Diet Program is really about.  And it is intentional that  we do NOT do weight loss on the step lists. If you start it too soon, it will derail your process and take you right back to diet head.

The reason the program is so powerful is the dialogue that happens on the list, and that happens in our weekly chats. Over time, these things accumulate. You learn them, you understand them and you use them.  It is not a 30 day process. And anyone who tells you that you can fix your overweight stuff in 30 days does not know what they are talking about.

YLD wants to heal the addiction first. You get steady, you create biochemical stability, you heal your emotional angst about your weight and you learn about your body, your life style and your history first.

You shift out of chaos and into recovery before you take on the challenge of permanent weight loss.  It does not mean that you don't start your last diet until *after* you are steady. It means that your last diet starts with breakfast. The Steps are your foundation.

It is very different from all the other diets. And very simple. But it does require a huge shift in thinking.  Here is what you get first:
  • Biochemical stability, something which has rarely been felt in the past
  • You heal the angst associated with your weight, your body and your self image (yes, this is true, believe it or not)
  • And you gain enormous skill in your relationship to food
After that part you do weight loss preparation that includes:
  •  Debunking myths about obesity
  •   Emotional Healing. A lot of this is around healing fat terror.
  •   Making metabolic changes to support weight loss
  •   Fitness specific to sugar sensitive bodies
Then you go on to learning to make metabolic changes:
  1. Getting enough omega 3 fatty acids
  2.  Learning how to balance sodium/potassium in your diet to maximize weight loss
  3. Learning how to eat more for weight loss (yes it is true, LOL)
  4. Learning how to heal insulin resistance

Each one of these variables really, really helps your process. Rather than simply doing a *diet* willy nilly, it is WAY better to understand your sugar sensitive body and why it is often hard for us to lose weight or to maintain it when we do. And why continued dieting messes up our metabolism.

Then you do actual weight loss. There are 4 parts of this:
  1. Creating a sense of joy in your life which has specific neurochemical effects on your body. This is done through what we call a *Joy dot practice*. Those of you who have been around the community for a while have heard us speak of this often. It is very simple, you learn to identify small things which bring you joy each day. This is not the same as *affirmations* which are thoughts...which means they come from the cognitive part of your  brain. Joy dots are recognizing feelings...and a joy dot practice puts you into a state of emotional healing.
  2. You begin building your vegetable intake so that more of your carbohydrate intake comes from vegetable sources.
  3. You shift into a fitness program designed for weight loss. This means continuing a plan that enhances muscle development, and then adding in some specific aerobic activity that enhances the demand for metabolic burn.
  4. You define your *best browns* and work at how much and when to have them.
  5. You define your sense of your *best body* based on what size clothes you want to wear, what kinds of activities you want to do. You weigh yourself as a base line, and you estimate approximately what amount of weight you will need to lose to get there. Each size of clothing is approximately 10 pounds.  And then you try some stuff out in #2- #4 and see what happens.
  6. You weigh yourself once a month and see what happens.

This is simple, easy and functional change. It is NOT a *diet*, it is an adaptation of your lifestyle. You get to decide how fast, how much and how deep.

Now, I know some of you will want to bypass all those steps and just go to the end. This is what addicts do LOL. You can if you want. Many have. Of course it puts you back into drama puppy mode and crash and burn mentality. But, LOL, you are in charge of your body and your life.  If you want to talk more about this, stop by the community forum.
