Sheelia,
cold turkey caffeine detox is very painful. I would not advise it - you will get a horrible, horrible headache.

When I was ready to quit caffeine, I very gradually mixed decaf into my coffee over a period of a month, until I was drinking decaf. But I waited until my food was really steady. If I had been using sugar in my coffee, I would have treated it as a sugar and moved it to meals on step 3 before eventually eliminating it. Doing it gradually was painless.

Quitting sugar cold turkey makes things harder, too. Almost everyone who tries it crashes and burns. That's why Kathleen doesn't have us do that - if it was the best way to do it, then you can be sure that it would be what she was advising us to do.
