Carol, after you put in your alternate email address, you have to click Finished. The next screen may come up and ask you to verify, and the email address will show blank. Click Edit and it should go back to the screen before. Your alternate address will probably be there. Then click on the link to verify it and it should show up with the new address.

I just went through this and it was sort of convoluted. I would say that the key to making it work was to put in my alternate address and click Finished before then trying to verify it.

If this doesn't work after you play around with it, I don't know what to tell you other than to click on Help and ask Yahoo.
