I didn't know the answer so I asked a few people and here is the answer from Jo:

BuddyMapping has a history of going up and down. This seems to be a common response when it's down. It will come back eventually, if history repeats itself. I have no idea why it happens. There might be something on their site that will explain it if it ever comes back .
