I've used plant based protein powders and they have worked fine. It's better to avoid soy unless you are menopausal, but there are other types available. Right now I'm combining brown rice protein powder with Restore, which is whey protein isolate. Some of the plant based protein powders have a taste or are a little gritty but if you can deal with that, you should be fine.
