Re: Coping with Chinese takeaway!

Chinese is not the best option for me. The white rice is not an issue, but I have issues if the sauces are sweet. I stay away from anything that is spicy (because it probably has sugar added) or that mentions being sweet and sour. But I don't react well to MSG, and although I won't relapse if the sauce is sweeter than I would have liked, it makes me feel fuzzy-headed and I get hungry again too soon. Like Mosaic, I find that Indian works better for me. Of course, on step 3 Chinese food is perfectly ok. If you are eating at your friends' house, you could bring your own brown rice if that helps, and the restaurant should have dishes with tofu for protein. Some places are flexible, and perhaps you could get tofu and veggie stir fry with soy sauce, garlic and ginger for the sauce.

I enjoy making my own stir fry at home. I do chicken, shrimp or pork, with a variety of vegetables, and for the sauce I use tamari and ginger, with a splash of sesame oil. If I feel like having it spicy, I add red pepper flakes. That might be an option for the future - bring or make your own stir fry, so you can be eating Chinese with your friends, but eating something that works for you. The important thing is that you are visiting your friends and enjoying their company. If you emphasize that the social aspect is the important part for you, and that you are perfectly content to eat your own food, then other people will relax about it, or at least that has been my experience.
