Hi Fiona,
Coming in a little late here-I've been away.
Chinese food is pretty easy now. The restaurant I go to has brown rice; many offer it. My favorite thing there is Green Jade (green beans, broccoli and snap peas), which I ask for with no sugar. Then I get Kung Pao tofu without sugar. I order two dishes for myself and take the leftovers home. My husband is gluten free and they make him dishes with gluten free soy sauce. In my experience Chinese restaurants are happy to accommodate. You can probably ask for any dish with tofu (fried is best, not so blubbery, ha ha) instead of meat. I've also gotten tofu with eggplant and ginger, no sugar, so yummy.
Like others said, it's nice to enjoy dinner with friends. I hope you do.
