Staying with people can be a real challenge. I remember staying with a friend once early on. I actually brought my own food and cooked for myself, which turned out to be a very good thing, because my friend and her husband ate randomly. I told her I was following a special diet and didn't want to inconvenience her so I would cook for myself.
I wonder if your friend would have been all right with you cooking your own whole grain pasta?
This will get easier as you get more comfortable, but some people make it easier than others. Good for you for speaking up about needing protein.

: Hi everyone
: We are staying with friends who are
: not sugar sensitive. They ear
: white bread, pasta etc and there
: are chocolates and cakes
: everywhere. Dinner last night was
: white pasta, tomato sauce, grated
: cheese and chocolate. I’ve bought
: oatcakes and nut butter with me.
: Dinner tonight was going to be
: mushroom curry (chicken for the
: meat eaters)but I said I need some
: protein so we are having chickpea
: curry. I explained that I was
: following RR and my lovely friend
: said, ‘you obviously have too much
: time to be thinking about all
: thst’. I’m ignoring that comment.
: I’ve read Kathleen’s books before
: and after work as I know that I
: need this information. I think
: recently Allison said that the
: most challenging times are
: travelling, eating out and
: socialising. I’m finding this
: challenging but being gently
: assertive to get my needs meet,
: new behaviour indeed for me.
