Morning has broken
Welcome to Radiant Recovery®

April 23, 2018

Hi {!firstname_fix},

Here is another edition arriving on Monday instead of Sunday night.  The advantage is getting my creative mind first thing in the morning :). You will get some original thoughts today.

The new community part of the website is pretty close to being done. It is up, we will test it today and tomorrow and then when we are ready, I will send out a *special edition* newsletter to tell you all about it in depth.  I am very excited about it, love how it works and think you will be really pleased. And...of course getting it set to go has been way more multileveled and complex than what we thought when we started.  But isn't that just how life is.

For those of you who have planned to come for Ranch, please make sure your accommodations are all set as well.

In the meantime, please be patient as Yahoo hobbles along. Keep copies of your posts and send them from the Yahoo site if need be. Or, if you have a yahoo email, you might want to use a different one.  Or post on the forum. Maintain your humor and stay connected. Come to chat if you can. We are making the best of it and staying focused on the solution.

I said last week that I would be opening up a new coaching option for men. I had a number of guys wanted to start the program and ask me to work with them. In further discussion with some other people, they raised the fact that they would like a *tell me how to do it* style coaching. It occurred to me to rethink that maybe the issue was not about gender so much as learning style. My approach has always been one of self discovery with guidance but I realized that my approach has of course been shaped by what works for me. And what I am hearing is that some people do way better with more structure. Knowing the rules, not having to make so many choices and following a routine creates safety for them. And safety creates being able to do it. I need another week or so to think about this. We will talk about it in chats, I will run it by the mentors and you can hear more soon.

Remember if you have ideas or input for us on what you would like to have available, share them on the Community Forum. We do listen and are very interested in your ideas.

CLASSES

I will be offering one 2 week class per month. Registration will be limited to 20 per class. If more sign up, I will open a second section. Classes are done by email, so there are no specific time constraints to be present. If you are new to the community I strongly recommend you take the brain chemistry classes.

Beta Endorphin

Learn how this chemical affects your self-esteem and why your capacity to cope may be directly related to your beta endorphin levels. A fascinating look at the part of the story that is most crucial to sugar sensitivity. We have just started so if you want to sneak over right now, I will put you in.

WORKING WITH KATHLEEN

I feel very strongly about offering you a way to work with me directly. I have set up a whole range of options for you to do that - going from private coaching to being involved in small groups. This link will show you all the choices. Please note that Coaching Apprentice is open to people starting or restarting. Directed Coaching is a specialized format geared to people who would like concrete, specific direction, Coaching Skilled is for people who are settled with their steps and want to look at other issues more in-depth. Signature Coaching is for those who want to work individually with Kathleen in a 90-day process.

Another option is setting up a one hour assessment and then making a decision based on that conversation.

And you can always call 505-345-3737 and ask me about how each one works.

Testimonial of the Week

Well it is a cool, rainy morning here in Denver, but the weekend was warm and beautiful. I cleaned my house, paid my bills, went to the gym, and rode my motorcycle both Saturday and Sunday. All of those things make me feel so good, happy, and alive. I made sure to spend some quality time with my animals. Tonight I'll be spending quality time with my plants. :-)

I am mostly relying on my existing food supplies this week, so cooking was minimal. I did roast a chicken in the crockpot overnight, and I made some barley, but all the rest of the food either came from the freezer, a can, or is kind of ready-made (bread, fresh & frozen veggies, etc.).

Yesterday marked 3 months on Step 6 for me. [I had one sugar slip during that time, but came right back to Step 6 at my next meal.] I have seen so many, many positive changes. I am letting my body take the lead, and she is going fabulous places! I'm really loving my veggies like never before. This weekend, instead of just walking like I have been, I/my body wanted (!) to get on the stationary cycle for a bit, and I did, and it was fine, not the struggle that I remember it being before I began listening to her. I am feeling very healthy physically.

So that's my testimony to doing the food. I came from alcoholism, depression, rage, anxiety, bingeing, and fibromyalgia to where I am today, and it is nothing short of a miracle. And all because of changing what and when I eat.

My weight is good for me. Is there any point in joining?
Absolutely. The chats alone are worth the price of joining. We have many people who use YLD to work on body image, restriction, or simply joyful relationship to food.

I am just starting the steps. Does it make sense to join now?

Yes, it does.  We have found that the people who come to chats do the best with the steps. There is something about the in-person, real-time connection that makes your program thrive.

If you are not a YLD member, come and join us. If you are a current member and want to join us in the new chat room, come to the
landing page.  I will post the page chat words on the YLD list.

What the Program Brings You
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I have been working on the newest update of Potatoes Not Prozac which will expand the meaning of Step 7. Of course when I wrote the first edition, I really had no idea of what Step 7 might be. Even with the second edition, the stories were just starting to emerge over time. These are the stories of how we live in recovery. It is about learning the life skills we lost when we turned to addiction to help us cope with pain that was too big or too scary to face.

I think the process of Step 7 is developmental and progresses this way:

  • Stopping the addiction and healing the biochemistry
  • Getting steady and settled
  • Learning what real feelings are (as opposed to sugar feelings)
  • Learning to feel safe
  • Exploring old wounding and learning to heal it
  • Living the gift of recovery and living in joy
  • Finding spiritual awakening and empowerment

It is not necessarily a linear process. Not everyone goes in this sequence. Some people start with a spiritual awakening and they move towards being settled. Some people start by living in joy. Some with feeling safe. In my experience, it is pretty much impossible to progress without stopping the addiction and healing the biochemistry. The process I have designed starts with that. The rest of the progress is simply my own discernment about what seems to work best.

I have been listening for more than 40 years to a lot of people in a lot of different ways. One of the most important things I have learned is that while it might seem like *hard work* to do all this, it actually isn't. You may have bought into the concept of *no pain, no gain* or that change is hard. But it actually isn't. The truth is that it doesn't have to be hard. You simply have to want it.

That said, there are 2 things that get in the way:
  • Being stuck in learned helplessness
  • Being stuck in addiction
Ok, now this might seem as if I am contradicting myself. Because if you are sitting in the middle of those two things, it will seem hard beyond belief. And you will give up before you even start. Here is the thing....the steps, and step one in particular is deigned to unstick you. It is literally a way out, with tiny little things you can do, master and build together to calm down and make progress without angst.  So literally, the only thing you have to start with is willingness and then let step one start its magic.

You don't have to be nice, you don't have to believe anything, you don't have to pay anything, and even if you think it is absurd, the only thing you have to do is have breakfast.  I am making myself laugh. You see, who would ever believe this. It is way too wacky.

But here we are. Thirty years later and people are still getting well, and still finding empowerment and joy.

Here is the Annie Lane column that brought so many of you here.

Dear Annie: I read with interest the letter from "Weird, Stupid or Selfish?" – whose husband eats all the decorative candy she puts out. His inability to resist sugar resonated with me, as I have sugar sensitivity and have engaged in exactly the same behaviors. I simply could not resist sugar.

After years of struggling and dieting and sitting in work meetings obsessing about the doughnuts instead of the topic at hand, I discovered the book "Potatoes Not Prozac," by Kathleen DesMaisons. Her theory is that people who are sugar sensitive have brains that respond differently to sugar, alcohol and refined carbs and that what they eat and when they eat it have a huge effect on them. She shows how to rebalance blood sugar levels, serotonin and beta-endorphins through small lifestyle changes and offers the latest research, free online support and seven steps to change your life. It is not about willpower; it’s about biochemistry, which her program can slowly improve, just one tiny step at a time, with amazing results.

I have been sugar-free for six years now, lost 25 pounds and never gained any of it back. I can go to dinner with family and don’t even think twice when someone orders dessert. I don’t have cravings, and sugar is no longer on my radar. I am more focused and more tolerant, and the daily mood swings are gone. The woman who wrote to you could suggest to her husband that he check out http:// radiantrecovery.com to see whether he does have sugar sensitivity. At the very least, she would be better informed about this condition. – Happy Without Sugar

Dear Happy Without Sugar: I hadn’t considered that health issues might explain

her husband’s behavior. In fact, I hadn’t even heard of sugar sensitivity.

Thanks for opening my eyes to the condition! I’d like to encourage all readers to talk to their doctors if they find themselves compulsively eating sugary snacks.
