Roberts Harbor in Maine
Welcome to Radiant Recovery®
July 1, 2018,

Hi {!firstname_fix},

Lots has been happening this week. Let me go through our update with you.

I am not going to Maine this summer. The picture above is the view from the deck there. You can imagine that I am sitting there having lobster and corn on the cob from the farmer's market. We would save the shells for the seagulls.

We will no longer be running the Using the Resources of the Community orientation class. We will put the information up under the *START* tab. You will be able to access it at your leisure. Expect to see this in the next week or so.

Almost 50 people responded to the survey about screen addiction. I will be offering an in-depth course on the subject starting in August. I want to work with you to understand the neurochemistry of screen addiction. We will also cover subtypes of Internet addiction including Internet pornography, chat rooms, Internet gaming, and Internet gambling. The focus will be on removing the shame generally associated with this and helping you to be functional and proactive (or helping someone else. We will also look at how *doing the food* helps healing screen addiction. I anticipate having completed a certificate in Screen Addiction prior to starting this class. This class will last for 4 weeks and be $99. Email me if you would like to attend.
Kathleen DesMaisons, PhD

If you would like to take the survey, I will leave it up until Monday.

Let me know if you have thoughts or ideas. My apologies for the errors and duplications in the last newsletters. I was on the phone with our distribution for 45 last week before I sent the newsletter. I will continue working with them to get the coding resolved. Thank you for your patience.

Remember if you have ideas or input for us on what you would like to have available, share them on the Community Forum. We do listen and are very interested in your ideas.

WORKING WITH KATHLEEN

I feel very strongly about offering you a way to work with me directly. I have set up a whole range of options for you to do that - going from private coaching to being involved in small groups. This link will show you all the choices. Please note that

Coaching Apprentice is open to people starting or restarting. Apprentice coaching is more structured and skills oriented.
Coaching Skilled is for people who are settled with their steps and want to look at other issues more in-depth.
Signature Coaching is for those who want to work individually with Kathleen in a 90-day process. Signature is the top of the line. All who have done it talk about their lives being changed. The trick is to have someone who truly knows what you need for your brain. If you want to heal unbalanced sugar sensitivity, call me at 505-345-3737 and ask me about how each one works.

Testimonial of the Week

The books were right. You were right. I messed up. Even though the main premise of the plan is mastering one step before moving on to the next, I was so sure that I could do it all at once because I was REALLY, REALLY ready and motivated.

So, for almost two weeks now, I've:

  1. Eaten breakfast with protein every morning (but not quite within 1 hour of getting up)
  2. Written in my journal - (OK, not so much!)
  3. Eaten three meals with protein (did that)
  4. Taken vitamins and eaten bedtime potato (did that too)
  5. Shifted from white to brown (ditto)
  6. Eliminated sugars (even did that and am VERY proud of myself)

But, here I am at Day 12, and I'm tired, frustrated, and most of all sick of counting protein. I'm putting up a fierce resistance to an earlier breakfast and I don't know why. Worst of all I'm developing an attitude - one that I've struggled with on every diet I've ever been on - where I'm just ticked off that I'm even having to do this, where I know it's not going to work long term, and where I'm close to giving up. Seems I've bitten off too much at one time. (Just as I was warned!) And to top it off, it's PMS time!?

So....I know you're all going to say go back to Step 1 with a beginner's mind. Oh how tired I am of that phrase! But that's my intent. I'm going to focus on breakfast and have ordered a supply of George's Shake so that I can have it on the go within an hour of waking up.

Recipes to Remember

Here is a note that Verla wrote to LIzanne about the Cookbook. I think it should be in everyone's kitchen.

Hi Lizanne, glad you posted!

Yes, I have the cookbook and it is tattered and dogeared from so much use. There are many great recipes in it that have become part of my standards (Kathleen's lasagna has never been matched, in my opinion), and it is also a very good little reference book. There are also spaces where I have written a few of my own in.

The recipe for Kathleen's baking mix is in the book, and I use that too, it is quick and easy.

I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Radiant Living
Radiant Living is geared to looking at Step 7 issues. These would include things like jobs, relationships, hopes, dreams and joys. It is open to people who are on Step 7 or people who have been on Step 7, got lost and want to come back to what they know is best for them. As many of you may know, we shifted the YLD chats to have a designated topic each week. Radiant Living remains *on demand* so we can respond to issues that are coming up for the chatters. It sure is fun!

Charlotte is continuing the introductory class on the YLD list. What is the program? How is it different from *dieting*? Why would it be a *last*? What a great discussion is happening. What a GREAT time to join!

I am just starting the steps. Does it make sense to join now?

Yes, it does. We have found that the people who come to chats do the best with the steps. The connection in chat is awesome. You get a chance to talk with the old timers, you can ask questions and I am right there to guide you, It really is an incredible opportunity.

I had someone ask me this week if I could send her testimonials of people who have lost a hundred pounds or more. It made me smile. I said I didn't keep statistics. If any of you have lost a lot of weight, could you write me and tell me. It just so is not the point of what we are doing. How do we explain this?

If you are not a member yet, come and join us. If you are a current member and want to join us in the new chat room, come to the landing page. We will send you the pass words after you join.

I get what you're saying. I read your post and it makes a lot of sense. I guess this kinda comes back to take your time and enjoy the ride. If all we are concerned with is getting to point *a* we miss the whole journey of getting there. I am quite guilty of that, I do that quite a lot with things in my life, and I believe to an extent that is why time seems to fly by for me, it is going way too fast. When I was building my business, I kept my eyes on the day of looking to when it would be built, and looking back I missed the whole building part which could've been fun. I am doing this same thing with the program, I keep looking at the day when I'm going to be really healed, and I am missing a lot of the journey. I'm glad you brought this up, it makes me aware of this, I need to flow more as you put it. I can see the need for a balance between the two.

Tom wrote this to one of the lists. I asked him if I could quote him because it really touched me. I think he is onto a key issue - spending time in the *process* of recovery rather than thinking about rushing to some end.

This means, enjoying the art of step one when you are on step one. Really learning about breakfast, making things you really love, planning breakfast, finding a shake you really look forward to having, making a meal that suits you, having it on time and having it anywhere you might travel too.

Then, as you progress, you enjoy, truly enjoy the step you are on. This means thinking about journaling rather than about sugar. Or thinking about lunch rather than bingeing. Or about breakfast rather than being out of control.

This is actually the crux of the program - getting you latched on to the solution rather than swirling in the problem. Doesn't this make sense?

Here is the Annie Lane column that brought so many of you here.

Dear Annie: I read with interest the letter from "Weird, Stupid or Selfish?" – whose husband eats all the decorative candy she puts out. His inability to resist sugar resonated with me, as I have sugar sensitivity and have engaged in exactly the same behaviors. I simply could not resist sugar.

After years of struggling and dieting and sitting in work meetings obsessing about the doughnuts instead of the topic at hand, I discovered the book "Potatoes Not Prozac," by Kathleen DesMaisons. Her theory is that people who are sugar sensitive have brains that respond differently to sugar, alcohol and refined carbs and that what they eat and when they eat it have a huge effect on them. She shows how to rebalance blood sugar levels, serotonin and beta-endorphins through small lifestyle changes and offers the latest research, free online support and seven steps to change your life. It is not about willpower; it’s about biochemistry, which her program can slowly improve, just one tiny step at a time, with amazing results.

I have been sugar-free for six years now, lost 25 pounds and never gained any of it back. I can go to dinner with family and don’t even think twice when someone orders dessert. I don’t have cravings, and sugar is no longer on my radar. I am more focused and more tolerant, and the daily mood swings are gone. The woman who wrote to you could suggest to her husband that he check out http:// radiantrecovery.com to see whether he does have sugar sensitivity. At the very least, she would be better informed about this condition. – Happy Without Sugar

Dear Happy Without Sugar: I hadn’t considered that health issues might explain

her husband’s behavior. In fact, I hadn’t even heard of sugar sensitivity.

Thanks for opening my eyes to the condition! I’d like to encourage all readers to talk to their doctors if they find themselves compulsively eating sugary snacks.
