Picture of Your Body Speaks Journal
Welcome to Radiant Recovery®
October 8, 2018,

Hi {!firstname_fix},

This will be the journal issue. I had some questions from the Step Two list and I wrote them a post that really motivated me to work with my own journal so I decided to share it with all of you. I wanted you to have the feeling I had when I wrote - that somehow our journals are a sacred record of our learning to communicate with our bodies. So often we just hop out and leave them. Inviting them to teach us to listen and learn what they have to say.

At chat tonight we talked about having Kath in Perth, Australia share on Facebook about her chickens. It made us realize how many of us share the feelings about how we reconcile out relationship to animals and what we eat. We don't have answers yet - we only know the risk of relating to the chickens as Individuals means we might feel differently about eating them.

I am sorry the newsletter is late.I have no excuse except last week did me in. On Sunday night I could do nothing more than sit. I have no words of wisdom, healing or reconciliation yet. It is still too big and too difficult. But I know enough to make good meals, to stay away from Dairy Queen and think about vegetables and chickens rather than ice cream. I learned a lot about just staying in the moment today and tonight I can write about journals.

I am going to Ohio tomorrow. On Wednesday I will be in Tiffin. I will be speaking at The St. Francis Ministries Wellness Extravaganza. You are welcome to stop by if you are nearby. My grandsons wanted to know what I was doing. I said I would be dressed up and not in my jeans and sweatshirt and would be talking about sugar addiction and sugar sensitivity. They were impressed. They will be here with David, taking care of the rescues and the house. We are all in this together.

I am moving ahead with the idea of making a video about the steps. We are starting with getting a graphic of a Kathleen character. it is happening.

I put up a new link to the Resource Center on the home page of www.radiantrecovery.com and added a page on alcoholism and drug addiction. I will continue to build this over time. See what you think.

Remember if you have ideas or input for us on what you would like to have available, share them on the Community Forum. We do listen and are very interested in your ideas.

WORKING WITH KATHLEEN

I feel very strongly about offering you a way to work with me directly. I have set up a whole range of options for you to do that - going from private coaching to being involved in small groups. This link will show you all the choices.

Coaching Apprentice is open to people on steps 1-3 who are starting their program. We have some new people starting so it is a great time to join Apprentice coaching.
Coaching Skilled is for people who are on step 7 and want to look at other issues more in-depth.
Signature Coaching is for those who want to work individually with Kathleen in a 90-day process. Signature is the top of the line. All who have done it talk about their lives being changed.

Another option is setting up a one hour assessment and then making a decision based on that conversation. And you can always call 505-345-3737 and ask me about how each one works.

Testimonial of the Week

My name is Joan. I'm in Madison, WI. I read Potatoes Not Prozac. The chapter Brain Chemistry 101 was a huge epiphany for me and the answer to the mystery: How can one tiny Hershey’s Kiss destroy 6 weeks of sugar abstinence and set the whole thing in motion again?

Then, I stumbled upon The Sugar Addicts Total Recovery Program. Since Jan. Ive done all the unproductive things (all the steps at once, just the potato, thinking three breakfasts meant Id conquered step one, weeks spent shopping for the perfect journal, numerous false starts journal-ing, giving up, starting over and giving up again, and again, and). I say unproductive but for me, maybe this has all been part of the process. Anyway, Ive come to the disheartening belief that I simply cannot do this alone. Also, that this program is the solution to the gigantic crazy angst that is my life.

So, Im hoping to find out the best way to get the support I need to do the program. That will involve figuring out what form of support will actually help. The website has so many options; I thought Id start with an orientation.

Looking forward to meeting the rest of you

The Layers of Step Two

Kathleen DesMaisons, PhD

So here are the layers of Step Two:

Layer 1 is recording time and food.

Layer 2 is getting accurate amounts.

Layer 3 is recording physical feelings.

Layer 4 is recording emotional feelings.

Layer 5 is learning to review.

Layer 6 is seeing patterns.

Layer 7 is discovering nuance.

Layer 8 is joyful dialogue.

When you start journaling, all you do is write down what and when you ate.

Then you learn to notice how much and to discern the difference between 3 oz (or 100 grams) of chicken and 4 oz (or 150 grams). and you write that down.

And then you probably start working on step 3. :)

And as you go, you notice and write down if you have a headache or are tired and you write that down. Then you start noticing if you are happy, sad or mad. Mostly you start doing this on step 3 because it is fun to notice how things change.

The *seeing patterns* doesn't really happen for quite a while And nuance and dialogue generally come on step 7.

Step 2 weaves through your entire program. It is developmental and grows over time.

The early questions it answers are *Am I eating enough?*. and *Am I eating on time?*

I hope this helps to clarify.

Kathleen

Here is the Annie Lane column that brought so many of you here.

Dear Annie: I read with interest the letter from "Weird, Stupid or Selfish?" – whose husband eats all the decorative candy she puts out. His inability to resist sugar resonated with me, as I have sugar sensitivity and have engaged in exactly the same behaviors. I simply could not resist sugar.

After years of struggling and dieting and sitting in work meetings obsessing about the doughnuts instead of the topic at hand, I discovered the book "Potatoes Not Prozac," by Kathleen DesMaisons. Her theory is that people who are sugar sensitive have brains that respond differently to sugar, alcohol and refined carbs and that what they eat and when they eat it have a huge effect on them. She shows how to rebalance blood sugar levels, serotonin and beta-endorphins through small lifestyle changes and offers the latest research, free online support and seven steps to change your life. It is not about willpower; it’s about biochemistry, which her program can slowly improve, just one tiny step at a time, with amazing results.

I have been sugar-free for six years now, lost 25 pounds and never gained any of it back. I can go to dinner with family and don’t even think twice when someone orders dessert. I don’t have cravings, and sugar is no longer on my radar. I am more focused and more tolerant, and the daily mood swings are gone. The woman who wrote to you could suggest to her husband that he check out http:// radiantrecovery.com to see whether he does have sugar sensitivity. At the very least, she would be better informed about this condition. – Happy Without Sugar

Dear Happy Without Sugar: I hadn’t considered that health issues might explain

her husband’s behavior. In fact, I hadn’t even heard of sugar sensitivity.

Thanks for opening my eyes to the condition! I’d like to encourage all readers to talk to their doctors if they find themselves compulsively eating sugary snacks.
