Welcome to Radiant Recovery®
October 14, 2018,

Hi {!firstname_fix},

I made my journey to the Wellness event in Tiffin, Oh. I really enjoyed it. The St. Francis Ministries hosted a morning of a large number of people who provide services to older people. I met a young woman who is the Director of the local RSVP (retired senior volunteer program). It is her first job and she is 28. I told her that when I was 28 I had been the director of an RSVP program in New Hampshire. She told me that that would have been just 2 years after the national program started. It was very sweet and brought back fond memories for me.

I scouted out a place to have breakfast in the morning and ended up having a very nice meal at Rosie's Cafe. They had ceramic pumpkins on a shelf. They also had spiders made from black sequins. It was Ohio country decor and made me smile. Even though I told you last week I would be getting dressed up, I actually decided to wear my black tee-shirt with the pumpkin and a Golden Retriever on it. I thought it would give people a better way to *know* me.

The biggest issue, of course, was how can you have a meal without dessert? LOL. I invited them to come over and talk with all of you since you can answer that question very well. I am glad I went even though it was an arduous trip home.

I hope you had a chance to check out the new link to the Resource Center on the home page of www.radiantrecovery.com. I added a page on alcoholism and drug addiction. I will continue to build this over time. Let me know your thoughts about it.

Remember if you have ideas or input for us on what you would like to have available, share them on the Community Forum. We do listen and are very interested in your ideas.

WORKING WITH KATHLEEN

I feel very strongly about offering you a way to work with me directly. I have set up a whole range of options for you to do that - going from private coaching to being involved in small groups. This link will show you all the choices.

Coaching Apprentice is open to people on steps 1-3 who are starting their program.  We have some new people starting so it is a great time to join Apprentice coaching.
Coaching Skilled is for people who are on step 7 and want to look at other issues more in-depth.
Signature Coaching is for those who want to work individually with Kathleen in a 90-day process. Signature is the top of the line. All who have done it talk about their lives being changed.

Another option is setting up a one hour assessment and then making a decision based on that conversation. And you can always call 505-345-3737 and ask me about how each one works.

Testimonial of the Week

I am including this testimonial now so you might have a chance to think of some of these ideas ahead of time.

I wanted to write a little about my holiday because it was an interesting year for us.

First of all, we made a budget for presents and we have never done that before. And we didn't use any credit. I felt really good about that. The girls and I made a lot of gifts and so did Jon. He made this awesome gift for his mom and aunt--he took old 8 mm reel film footage (1950's) of the family and put it on a DVD along with songs that his grandparents had recorded singing on 78 records. We watched it Christmas Eve and there wasn't a dry eye in the room. That was wonderful.

The most exciting part of the whole holiday was what had changed from last year. First, the food was less dessert centered. I made a few "goodies" that my kids love and they ended up getting eaten as much as the fudge! I love that! Secondly, everyone in the family ended up making presents as well as buying. I can't tell you how it shifted things for us all. Last year was so depressing...tons of gifts strewn everywhere and we were all kind of overwhelmed and sad afterwards. This year my brother in law made us a bird feeder out of wood and also made all the adults these beautiful pens out of wood. Mine is made of Tulipwood and is cream colored with rose colored grain throughout. There was less stuff, but much more heart.

Thirdly, I did not get stressed out. My inlaws, bless them, take on a lot, and when I go there I get caught up in it. I feel like I "need" to help them. This time I thought, "You know, I'm going to do whatever I can to help, but not get caught up in the stress of it." And I did. It made things much more enjoyable for me.

Erin, my 7.5 yo, stayed with my inlaws for the rest of this week. It's the first time she's been away from home for more than a night. I was really uncomfortable with her doing that at first, but then as it got closer I just let it go. I worry that she will melt down and not be able to figure out what she needs (she's very ss), but I also see there a huge amount of growth that can come with this. My inlaws are just wonderful about the food now. My fil doesn't get it at all, but he complies. I'm also afraid she won't want to come home, lol, because my inlaws are spoiling her rotten.

So now there is a new year coming. My mom is coming to visit for a couple of weeks. I'm going to put her to work, too. I am going to make some curtains for a couple of rooms and see if I can't get my bedroom finished (needs painting).

Well, thanks for reading. I'm off to start the day! Heather D.

Hurricanes, Devastation and Such

Kathleen DesMaisons, PhD
I am putting up this picture of pine trees in the rain even though I used it not too long ago. I took this picture when I went to visit a friend who lives in the panhandle of Florida. I flew out of the Panama City airport and it was raining. When Hurricane Michael hit, we didn't know if she and her family were safe for a long time. It made the reality of the storm hit home.

Somehow the feelings of having no control while what we know and cherish is being ravaged are so old and so deep that it is really, really hard to bear. I know that I have been feeling that way, and that the storms of the last year are interwoven with storms of the heart. I have been meditating and reflecting on how it is we can be still and make any difference at all. I found this article that I had written 14 years ago after the tsunami in Japan. I am sharing it again. It comforts me.

I have waited to write to you about the Tsunami because I, like most of you I am sure, have had to collect my thoughts first. It was too big, too devastating to even know where to start in making sense of it. But today, something clicked for me.

As some of you know, I have had an ongoing interest in the scientist from Japan who has been photographing frozen water crystals and seeing the impact of different messages on the structure of the water. He published a series of amazing photographs. The crystals from water that many people had said *I love you to* were exquisite and beautifully formed. The crystals from the water that people had said *you fool* or *I hate you* were malformed, broken and distorted.

Even more interesting were photographs from a lake that was severely polluted. The crystals from the lake water were dark, jagged and looked like the water exposed to heavy metal rock music. It was pretty unsettling. Then they did an intriguing experiment. They took a group of people out to this lake and prayed for it. After the prayer, they collected some water, froze it and photographed it. Its structure had changed totally. It was now formed into the same sort of perfect crystal structure we see in snowflakes.

The scientist is now talking about praying for the ground water left after the tsunami. He is convening people to offer their prayers. So I went over to his website to check out what he was saying. His message seems a little strange to me these days. He no longer posts the photographs on his web site for free, you have to pay for them. He gets paid a lot of money for lectures and the like. So I am thinking he has kinda forgotten the simplicity of his own original message.

But the invitation retains its power. I like the idea of offering our prayers not only for the people but for the water and the land. There are a lot of us. And there are a lot of us in recovery which means we have cleared out a lot of our own fear and distortion and *pollution* from the water within our own bodies. So I think we have clear hearts to ask for healing for the areas that were devastated. I am going to suggest that we do this collectively. Perhaps every day at 6 PM MST we can all stop for 5 minutes and simply ask for healing of the devastated land and people. Here is a link to an international clock if you want to sort out what time that would be for you. Use Denver, CO to calculate MST.

I know I cannot make this horrible, horrible thing right, but I can offer my own heart and openness for the healing to come. I invite you to join me and all those who are making this commitment.

Warmly,

Kathleen

Here is the Annie Lane column that brought so many of you here.

Dear Annie: I read with interest the letter from "Weird, Stupid or Selfish?" – whose husband eats all the decorative candy she puts out. His inability to resist sugar resonated with me, as I have sugar sensitivity and have engaged in exactly the same behaviors. I simply could not resist sugar.

After years of struggling and dieting and sitting in work meetings obsessing about the doughnuts instead of the topic at hand, I discovered the book "Potatoes Not Prozac," by Kathleen DesMaisons. Her theory is that people who are sugar sensitive have brains that respond differently to sugar, alcohol and refined carbs and that what they eat and when they eat it have a huge effect on them. She shows how to rebalance blood sugar levels, serotonin and beta-endorphins through small lifestyle changes and offers the latest research, free online support and seven steps to change your life. It is not about willpower; it’s about biochemistry, which her program can slowly improve, just one tiny step at a time, with amazing results.

I have been sugar-free for six years now, lost 25 pounds and never gained any of it back. I can go to dinner with family and don’t even think twice when someone orders dessert. I don’t have cravings, and sugar is no longer on my radar. I am more focused and more tolerant, and the daily mood swings are gone. The woman who wrote to you could suggest to her husband that he check out http:// radiantrecovery.com to see whether he does have sugar sensitivity. At the very least, she would be better informed about this condition. – Happy Without Sugar

Dear Happy Without Sugar: I hadn’t considered that health issues might explain

her husband’s behavior. In fact, I hadn’t even heard of sugar sensitivity.

Thanks for opening my eyes to the condition! I’d like to encourage all readers to talk to their doctors if they find themselves compulsively eating sugary snacks.
