Welcome to Radiant Recovery®
Nov 18, 2018,
Hi {!firstname_fix},
Yep, that is a dog picture all right. It is the time of year for my annual pitch on behalf of Golden Retriever Rescue NM. I think most of you know by now that my avocation is placing Golden Retrievers who have been abandoned or thrown away. That is one of them. His name is Brody. He was thrown away because they said he was suicidal. This meant they kept him on a chain and he would try to jump the fence and then be hanging. So they decided he had a mental illness. I foster him. He is not suicidal. He does, however, like to jump fences.
He also likes to counter surf. He decided that the salmon from Costco was for him and grabbed it quick and raced to his hiding place under the cedar tree to scarf it down. He scarfed the bag it was in as well. The salmon got digested but the bag did not, so Mr. Brody ended up in the vet hospital and Rescue is once again needing to fund some vet bills. Rescue lives kinda close to the bone. The fees we get for adoptions cover our cost pretty much. Vaccinations, chips, medications, some ear hemoatomas, some heart worm. treatment.  But we have to rely on our fundraising to pick up the slack with surgery things.
I bring my personal life here to you because doing this feeds my soul and makes me grow. I trust your support and help. And I have learned that *asking* gives you an opportunity to participate. Thank you for your support!  And let me know if you would like to be involved in any other way.

I hope those of you in the US have a wonderful Thanksgiving. It is my favorite holiday of the year. My birthday follows on Sunday. It will be a nice weekend. We have lots to be thankful for!

We will be continuing with the Healthy Heart Class this week but no new classes will be starting.
WORKING WITH KATHLEEN
I feel very strongly about offering you a way to work with me directly. I have set up a whole range of options for you to do that - going from private coaching to being involved in small groups. This link will show you all the choices.
Coaching Apprentice is open to people on steps 1-3 who are starting their program.  We have some new people starting so it is a great time to join Apprentice coaching.  This is also a great place for those of you who want to come back to the program after trying some other things.
Signature Coaching is for those who want to work individually with Kathleen in a 90-day process. Signature is the top of the line. All who have done it talk about their lives being changed.
Another option is setting up a one hour assessment and then making a decision based on that conversation. And you can always call 505-345-3737 and ask me about how each one works.

Testimonial of the Week

Holly,

I was feeling the same way about visiting some friends I hadn't seen in twenty pounds. Part of me even considered waiting until I'd lost ten pounds before making the trip. Then I realized that I could wait forever before that happened, and after all, would I think any less of them if they'd gained some weight? They wanted to see me, not inspect me. So I went anyway.

Now what is really, really interesting to me is the Radiant magic. I have visited my health-conscious mother-in-law, and she simply didn't see the excess weight. She tried to give me her clothes to take home! My visit with my friends went wonderfully. They treated me like a rock star, telling me how wonderful I looked and how glad they were to see me.

I had a recent experience with the outspoken mother of a friend of mine who used to make teasing remarks about my body. (She is very, very thin.) I went to see her in the convalescent hospital, and my program has been going really well lately, and she kept going on and on about how wonderful I look. She even had me stand up so she could look at me. What's interesting about this is that my clothes were a little snug from an episode of Seasonal Affective Disorder triggering some cravings a couple of weeks back, and I hadn't released the excess yet. She simply didn't see the weight.

So of course you're going to feel a little self-conscious about the visit, but I have a funny feeling that these people will be really glad to see you, and not looking to find fault. (I'm assuming that these are nice people and you like them, right?) Once you're actually in the situation you'll have a good time and realize that your weigh was a non-issue.

I hope this helps,

Lora K.

Structure as Antidote

Kathleen DesMaisons, PhD

Many people come to Radiant Recovery® saying they are already doing most of the steps and just need to add a potato. I often suggest they get a copy of the talk I did at ranch in 2007 about what else is embedded in the steps. That discussion goes through each step and outlines the biochemical changes encoded in each step. But there is another key issue one I haven't really talked about. Structure antidotes blind lurching.
When we are in active addiction, it is as if we lose our center and we stop being grounded. We lurch from one thing to another. Maybe from diet to diet, job to job, person to person, place to place or interest to interest. We have 6 knitting and crafts projects going on. We present ourselves as creative and curious, liking to try new things. We collect little things like offices supplies or pens in case we need them. We lurch and resist being pinned down.
We might say that structure ties us down, thwarts our creativity. Structure seems dull and old fashioned. It seems routine and boring and who would want to do that. Nowhere in our brain have we thought of our behavior as lurching. We never really thought that a little of this and a little of that might be saying something about our sugar addiction.
Why is it that we dream big and stay small? Why is it that those sparks of insight and knowing sputter and fade rather than bursting into our passionate flame?
My hunch is that we have avoided the gift of structure. We haven't considered that structure, doing things in an intentional order might actually shape us. And it might change the lurching to intention. If you do this, you will get this result.
Now think about that. For so many years, we have worked to forget the consequence of our actions. We forget that if we eat sugar, or skip meals we get cranky and unpleasant. We forget that we lose direction and we lurch. We forget a lot.
So when we have structure, we stop lurching and we do not lose direction. Even early on in the program, when we are still forgetting because of our biochemistry, the structure itself guides us. The steps, those funny steps, lead us into intention. They guide us with if you do this, you will change. If you do these steps, you will have a life you cannot imagine.         Everything will shift. And it will shift in ways beyond anything you have considered.
Now, many of you may feel that this is simply talk. It is not. We now have enough people who are doing the steps for a long enough time that it is really, really clear that there is a developmental pattern that emerges very predictably over time. The promises we make happen.
The steps are bigger than the food. Don't think of changing them. Do them, do them and get the miracle.

Here is the Annie Lane column that brought so many of you here.

Dear Annie: I read with interest the letter from "Weird, Stupid or Selfish?" – whose husband eats all the decorative candy she puts out. His inability to resist sugar resonated with me, as I have sugar sensitivity and have engaged in exactly the same behaviors. I simply could not resist sugar.

After years of struggling and dieting and sitting in work meetings obsessing about the doughnuts instead of the topic at hand, I discovered the book "Potatoes Not Prozac," by Kathleen DesMaisons. Her theory is that people who are sugar sensitive have brains that respond differently to sugar, alcohol and refined carbs and that what they eat and when they eat it have a huge effect on them. She shows how to rebalance blood sugar levels, serotonin and beta-endorphins through small lifestyle changes and offers the latest research, free online support and seven steps to change your life. It is not about willpower; it’s about biochemistry, which her program can slowly improve, just one tiny step at a time, with amazing results.

I have been sugar-free for six years now, lost 25 pounds and never gained any of it back. I can go to dinner with family and don’t even think twice when someone orders dessert. I don’t have cravings, and sugar is no longer on my radar. I am more focused and more tolerant, and the daily mood swings are gone. The woman who wrote to you could suggest to her husband that he check out http:// radiantrecovery.com to see whether he does have sugar sensitivity. At the very least, she would be better informed about this condition. – Happy Without Sugar

Dear Happy Without Sugar: I hadn’t considered that health issues might explain

her husband’s behavior. In fact, I hadn’t even heard of sugar sensitivity.

Thanks for opening my eyes to the condition! I’d like to encourage all readers to talk to their doctors if they find themselves compulsively eating sugary snacks.
