Welcome to Radiant Recovery®
Feb 17, 2019,
Hi {!firstname_fix},
It has been a week of a lot of reflection. I redesigned the entire Journaling Class based on the work I have been doing with the Return to Radiance Class. We talked about this in chat and had an incredible time. I have decided to share these new insights with the entire community.
I am holding up on starting the Fat Terror Class until we have 8 people so it will have depth and substance. If you have struggled with your weight for your entire life, this is the class for you. If you have restricted what you eat because you are scared of gaining weight, this is the class for you. If you have lost weight but never dealt with the feelings underneath, take this class. it will be life changing.
If you are wondering why we are doing new and revised classes all of a sudden, it is because I have figured out a new way to make them really interesting for both you and me. I have designed a new format and revised the content so it is exciting and vital to me. If I am excited, you will be ;)
Because a couple of you have asked for it,I am reconvening the group for men. I do understand that you do the program differently. Your brains process doing the food differently. So it makes sense to have a place for you to talk with one another. If you want to be involved email me and I will get you set up.
Remember if you have ideas or input for us on what you would like to have available, share them on the Community Forum. We do listen and are very interested in your ideas.

CLASSES
We are starting the second round of the Return to Radiance Class. Whew, has that been fun!
HEALING FAT TERROR
Many of the people coming into the program bring a long history of dieting and a profound sense of pain about weight. Even though you have been trained to not talk about it and to act as if everything is all right, the fact is the pain still simmers under the surface. And is often the biggest impediment to successfully doing the program. This class will be thoughtful and intense. But very healing! It will be for 4 weeks with a specific curriculum. Look under weight loss to find it.
We will start this class when we have 8 people signed up.

LEARNING TO JOURNAL
This is a completely new and revised guide for learning how to journal successfully. It is open to every level of experience - from brand new beginners. to experienced Step 7s. We will approach the art of journaling with a sense of joy. How to do it and how to USE it. If you have struggled with journaling, this is the time to grab a class and really learn it. This is a 2 week class that will start next Wednesday and be very focused. Those of you who have been in chat have had a preview of what we are going to cover. It will be exhilarating!
I will not be doing this class again for six months.

Testimonial of the Week

I had a bad case of the Flat on step 3. It was pretty disappointing and I felt bored doing the food. I asked on the list just like you do now and was told it would pass. I decided to be patient and just do the food the best I could, and of course they were right. It passed and I felt much better after a while. I was a bit suprised when the flat came again on step 6, but it really does make sense. These are the steps where we lessen the impact of sugar - first by moving it to meals and then by taking it out - and the lack of BE hits can make us feel bored and flat. When the body adjusts, you come back to life again - so much better than before! So hang in there!

Love,

Lisa

Step Three foods
What Makes a Difference
Kathleen DesMaisons, PhD

I have been doing a lot of reflection this week. Why is it that some folks come to the program, do the food and find their lives changed? And others play with it, poke around, do a little here and there, and then go away and say it doesn't work? Or do step one for two years and wonder why life is not better? Why do some decide to rewrite it, adapt it, take only what they like and throw the rest away?

What makes the difference? I am thinking that there are three key things:

  • You have to trust it
  • You have to commit to it
  • You have to persist in doing it

When you are out of control and desperate, trusting, committing and doing seem really, really far away and really hard. You are likely to argue, question and want answers to every possible concern before starting. You want to see if it will work, try it out, have a money-back guarantee. You want to play without obligation. You might be too busy, too committed to other things, you might not want someone to see your journal or know your life is out of control.

When you find it takes time, you get bored, frustrated, angry, inattentive or sloppy. You blame the program for not meeting your needs. Or it is too confusing so you stop and say that didn't work. And you go do a real diet.

But there are others who say, 'Yes, this is for me' and they believe it, they do it and it works. What is that about? What happens? Where does that first trust and commitment come from? It is funny to think this, but I think ultimately, it is an act of faith. With a regular diet, you can pick or choose. There are thousands of them. If one doesn't work, you just try another. This silly program is different. It's so simple, it is so deceptive. It asks you to put aside what you have been taught. It asks you to do maintenance first. No glamour, no quick results, no hype. It says what you need to heal is here. If you want to use it, you can. Doesn't have to cost anything. You don't need a doc or to pay thousands of dollars. Doesn't matter if you are rich or poor, or smart or not, or living in a family. If you do it, your life will change.

As I wrote this in the early morning, I started to laugh because the simplicity of this message goes way beyond the food. I have a spiritual teacher. Every morning I meditate and read from her work. This was yesterday's reading:

If however, instead of being desires, they are aspirations for spiritual things, and one continues her life with regular progress, then one is absolutely sure to one day obtain what she has imagined.

I think that the struggle with 'doing the food' mirrors the struggle for a spiritual life. Trusting, committing, doing. Somehow this makes me laugh. I work so hard to complicate things. I thrash around, question, argue, insist that I know better and then I say the 'program' doesn't work.

This time is about quieting, living into the stillness, letting simplicity help me trust, help me recommit.

Here is the Annie Lane column that brought so many of you here.

Dear Annie: I read with interest the letter from "Weird, Stupid or Selfish?" – whose husband eats all the decorative candy she puts out. His inability to resist sugar resonated with me, as I have sugar sensitivity and have engaged in exactly the same behaviors. I simply could not resist sugar.

After years of struggling and dieting and sitting in work meetings obsessing about the doughnuts instead of the topic at hand, I discovered the book "Potatoes Not Prozac," by Kathleen DesMaisons. Her theory is that people who are sugar sensitive have brains that respond differently to sugar, alcohol and refined carbs and that what they eat and when they eat it have a huge effect on them. She shows how to rebalance blood sugar levels, serotonin and beta-endorphins through small lifestyle changes and offers the latest research, free online support and seven steps to change your life. It is not about willpower; it’s about biochemistry, which her program can slowly improve, just one tiny step at a time, with amazing results.

I have been sugar-free for six years now, lost 25 pounds and never gained any of it back. I can go to dinner with family and don’t even think twice when someone orders dessert. I don’t have cravings, and sugar is no longer on my radar. I am more focused and more tolerant, and the daily mood swings are gone. The woman who wrote to you could suggest to her husband that he check out http:// radiantrecovery.com to see whether he does have sugar sensitivity. At the very least, she would be better informed about this condition. – Happy Without Sugar

Dear Happy Without Sugar: I hadn’t considered that health issues might explain

her husband’s behavior. In fact, I hadn’t even heard of sugar sensitivity.

Thanks for opening my eyes to the condition! I’d like to encourage all readers to talk to their doctors if they find themselves compulsively eating sugary snacks.
