Hi {!firstname_fix},
We have been watering with water from the well. Everything is fixed. Turn it on and it sucks up water. Clear liquid come up from the ground and pours out the hose. No chlorine. The plants outside are very happy. Rosie has been trimming the rose plant by biting the flowers off. It is making the plant give us more blossoms. She did the same to the mint plant. It responded by sending out many, many new shoots. its funny, I also have a curry plant in the herb pot. She sniffed that and said "Nope, I prefer rose hips, thank you."
The tomatoes are almost ripe. They are locked up so little Miss Mischief cannot get to them. End of summer tomatoes, ripened on the vine are very, very good.
I love August. I decided to stop watching the news. I get 100+ emails a day asking for money. I do not read them. I just think about what to do today to eat three meals, to stay cool, to keep Rosie safe and to do regular life. In the early morning I think thoughts about the meaning of the universe and then write them down for Fall when it is cool. This afternoon, I burned a letter in which I had written old resentments on something I should have let go a long time ago. That felt good.It makes space for more joy.
On Sundays we have been having a family Zoom meeting which is a wonderful way to keep up with what we all are doing. Bob's wife asked me about our changing Ranch from in Albuquerque to live online. She made the suggestion of thinking about how to do it in creative ways. Maybe we could change the times. Maybe we could be creative. I hadn't thought of that, but I want to talk about what you all would like. I want to make it an organic, user driven event. And we have a way to do that, so our chats over the next few weeks will take a look at what we want and how to do it. So instead of feeling a "loss" we can opt for creative discovery.
My own thinking is that we use Ranch to spend time looking at life "after" the food. We might explore how our decisions are shaped by our choices. How do we respond to stress, to depression, to disorientation that we have never encountered before. How do we make change when we are all masked.Well, its funny but New Mexico has a COVID positivity rate of 3% vs Arizona with 15.5% and Texas with 16.2%, We never argued about it. We just trusted our Governor and did it. It is an interesting hologram.
Some questions I have good answers for, some I do not. But I KNOW that curiosity and willingness create answers. Discovery and recovery suit one another. And we have fabulous ways to talk about this so we will.
And if you are new and you think you might like to be a part of our annual gathering, tell me so we can include that in our planning.

Let me know if you have questions or ideas.

WORKING WITH KATHLEEN
Coaching is a special offering for people who are serious about enhancing their programs and would like to have ongoing coaching. Support is provided in a small group with people who are looking at similar concerns.  Kathleen is part of each coaching group. This is not a class but is a process to support your progress. We have added a special chat for people in coaching. It meets twice a week to accommodate those who are in Greenwich Mean Time and those who are in USA time.  If you are just starting, own the Step lists to learn the basics.
Coaching includes several options now: Return to Radiance Coaching for those who have done the steps in the past and then drifted and would like to get back on track. This is a good place to plug in if you have gotten wobbly and would like to restart your program.

Skilled Coaching is for people who are steady on the steps and ready to work on Step 7 life skills.

The fee for these three coaching options is $20 @ week, billed in 2 week intervals. The coaching is done in an email group and assumes active participation by the members. The process includes peer support with guidance and direction by Kathleen.

If you wish to join coaching send an email and say what you are interested in and why.

I am interested in coaching

I also provide individual intensive coaching called Signature Coaching.  I can help you step out of the craziness of sugar addiction, return to steadiness and clarity after slipping away, slow down and focus on your recovery, or deepen a steady rhythm of recovery. This particular option is especially helpful if you did the steps a while ago and then kinda meandered away. Or if you are facing some intense times and would. like skillful support.  But I can tell you that it is a good time to do coaching.
This is a 3 month process that includes doing an in-depth assessment of where you are in the process, designing an individual plan for you and then talking with me once a week via phone or Zoom to work on your progress. You will learn to do an efficient journal and to identify your strengths and challenges.
This is the way to step out of feeling overwhelmed with where to start and what to do. Because it is so individualized, we can work on what is right for you at this point in your journey.  People tell me that coaching helps them feel safe and focused. We work with your style, your rhythm. This is a unique opportunity to release your fear and let go of shame. The guidance can shorten and ease your process so that in 3 months you will do what you might take a year to do on your own. Signature coaching is also an excellent way to tackle any special needs you may have. like wanting to get sober, or dealing with insulin resistance, or integrating doing the food with special medical concerns.
And in fact, we have developed some creative personalized plans especially suited to where people are in the program and what will work best to support them. Call 505-345-3737 if you would like to chat.

Testimonial of the Week

Doretta found how her food can support her through a harrowing experience:

I was involved in a multiple vehicle accident on the Cimarron turnpike about 40 miles outside of Tulsa. A truck pulling a trailer ahead of me sheared off the lug nuts on two wheels. The wheels came into my lane and I hit one of them dead on. Two cars behind me hit the same wheel.

Miraculously, no injuries to anyone!!!!! So four vehicles and two Oklahoma Hiway Patrol officers spent the next two hours on the side of the road in the Oklahoma darkness ( a beautiful starry night with 5 healthy people) while three flatbed tow trucks came to get us and an industrial tow truck came to get the trailer.

I called Bob and told him I planned to have the vehicle towed to a Saturn dealer in Tulsa and take a taxi to my first day of work in the morning. But I was pretty shaken up. We just got the vehicle in May. He immediately left his job and started out for Tulsa so I could use his truck to go to work in the morning.

On my way into Tulsa with the tow truck driver, the tow truck ran out of gas. He called a coworker who brought us enough fuel to get to the service station.

The new alarm clock I bought for the apartment didn't work correctly and went off too early. So I went to my new job with 4 hours of sleep.

I was thinking the whole time how horrible the experience could have been if I wasn't in this program. I was so calm and clear thinking, even thought I was tired and cold. And I knew there would be solutions to the problems.

The morning after, I got up and ate my radiant breakfast and even though I was exhausted and worn out, I knew I had the skills to cope with whatever the day brought. That's something I've NEVER had before this and it's changed my whole life.

I'm so grateful to all of you and to Kathleen for this!

Rosie's Corner
Kathleen and Rosie
She keeps growing. Her legs are stretching. I think she will leap out of the x-pen in a week or so. She can't stand up in the crate in the car and will transition to a doggy seat belt tomorrow. Everyone wants pictures LOL. And you do not understand that a 3 month old puppy MOVES, moves fast. I promise I will get Andrew to take a picture of her for next week. A friend sent some antlers. They were too small, I was concerned she would choke. She sent another big one. I thought she would trip carrying it LOL. But I gave it to her in the pen.She gnawed herself to sleep. Respite.

Caffeine
Kathleen DesMaisons, PhD

A couple of people have been chatting on the main discussion list about their caffeine use and how they are simply not able to stop using it [ or maybe that they don't want to. I actually don't know ;) ] I thought it might be timely to include this article.

This week I want to raise the issue of caffeine with you. I am going to include a section from, Little Sugar Addicts. It will be less scary if I am talking about your children than about you. (smile).

I think the most compelling evidence about the impact of caffeine on your child’s brain comes from the work of Peter DeWitt who gave a group of spiders different drugs in the late 60s. DeWitt found the spiders that make what is called an orb web. It is beautiful, highly regular and predictable and can be easily photographed.

The top is a picture of a normal happy orb spider web with no drugs.

The soda industry has not found this little spider yet.

Now take a look at the picture of the spider on caffeine.

Sort of stops you cold, doesn’t it? Think about the implications of this for your child’s brain. Think of the impact on his ability to function in school. Sure made me think some. The key part of the caffeine story is the level of the “dose” based on your child’s weight. A can of soda for you is not the same as a can of soda for your child. A 12 oz. can of Coke has 35 mg of caffeine (Diet Coke has 45). If you put 35 mg of caffeine into a body that weighs 180 pounds, it diffuses a whole lot more than if you put it into a body that weighs 60 or 40 pounds. Basically, the same size can of soda can have 3 times more effect on your child than it does on you. Think about that spider web picture when you think about the dose impact on your child.

As you think about caffeine, remember that it is found not just in coffee and soda. Here is a list that gives you a sense of the relative value of caffeine in foods and drinks I am going to include some things like Starbucks drinks because I have noticed so many children now drinking Starbucks specialty drinks.

As you look at these, you can begin to see that yes, they can have a real impact on your child. If caffeine is a drug that peaks in 3-7 hours, it is reasonable to assume that your child will experience drug withdrawal at the earlier end of that scale. So you may have a child in caffeine withdrawal who is edgy, irritable, cranky and with a headache. So he can’t sit still and is whining. You think he is a bad boy. He gets the message he is bad boy and begins to think of himself that way. And the real thing that is going on is a biochemical reaction to the drug.

I strongly encourage parents to get their children off of caffeine. Do not give your children drinks and foods with caffeine in them. If your child is currently using caffeine, do not stop it abruptly. Going off of the drug should be done through what we call a taper process. This means cutting down over time. The first task is knowing the current level of using it. Figure out how much caffeine your child is getting. Use the same process you have been using all along. Do this with your child. Cut down over a 2 week period. If you child has caffeine soda intermittently, you can simply stop and say we aren’t doing that kind any more. Start with this before you think about the rest of the program for your kids.

And, of course, if you are touched by the spider webs and decide you want to get off it as well, let me know. I actually would be happy to run a free seminar on how to let go of caffeine effortlessly and how to stay off it - even when you feel depressed and hopeless.
