Hi {!firstname_fix},
That is comfort food for lunch today.  Thought you could use it :)
Thank you for all the feedback you have given me about Ranch. Today I will do a little clarification. Last weekend I attended an online seminar that was planned for Friday/Sat/Sunday. It included 3 days of Zoom from 11-5. I did the first day and literally felt ill by the end of the day. My intuition about the human brain's capacity to be engaged in a Zoom event for 5 hours was spot on. Anything we plan with Zoom has to be done differently.
I want to reiterate that my plans for the structure of Ranch this year is to honor our brains, and use the medium in the best possible way. We will have 3 formal sessions on Friday, 2 on Saturday, and 2 on Sunday. We will also have some informal small group sessions to talk about the material, and some drop in "social" session s for people to get to know one another, spend time together and learn more about your stories.
There will be two participation options: one for beginners that will include these three modules, and one for people who would like to attend the full Ranch including 7 modules. I am sorry that was not clear in last week's newsletter. You cannot simply choose which modules you would like to attend.
Here is what is planned so far.

INTRODUCTION
  • Brain chemistry
  • What else is embedded in the steps
  • Joy dots
DEVELOPING YOUR PROGRAM OVER TIME
  • Why the amygdala is so important
  • Correcting your course under stress
  • What to do at any stage of your program (Growing with the Steps)
  • How to make sense of your own addiction amoeba (Mastery of Step 7)
I will present the core material and then we will talk about the material together. Each module will also include a little workbook of the material. You will receive a PDF file for each module at the beginning of Ranch. It will include my special sketches, drawing and text that you can fill in, color and write on. These are in lieu of a power point presentation [which I do not find helpful]. They will let you have a visual to work with,  a place to take notes, and provide an opportunity to interact with the material.
Each teaching module will be about 60 minutes. The content presentation will be recorded and posted for you to watch and listen to after the live presentation. During that 60 minutes, I will talk for about 20, and we will have questions and answers for the remaining time. The beginner's program will be held on Friday and will include the first 3 modules.
If you wish to attend all of Ranch you will be welcome at all the formal modules and for "drop in" for a number of informal social gatherings on ZOOM. The times for the live presentations will be designed to primarily accommodate people in the USA and Europe/UK.  If we have attendees from Down Under, we will make accommodations for you. We will do a ZOOM training a week ahead of time for those of you who have not used ZOOM before.
We have had a lot of experience working with introverts. If you are an introvert, I think you will be very pleased with the approach we use. Prior to Ranch everyone will receive material so you can think about what we will be learning together and have time to formulate your questions and concerns.
The actual time together will be structured to allow connection on a personal level and timing that avoids brain fatigue and burnout.  Here is the link to read more about Ranch. Let me know if you have questions. .
Put the time in November (13-14-15) in your calendar. It is a unique opportunity to meet the people you hear talking on the lists.
Finally, please note that this year's Ranch is actually in a fluid process stage. I want this to be a success for all of us. Doing an online/live function is totally different from doing it in persons it is still in development. If you have questions or ideas, please let me know.

I am now offering a free consultation for you before you make ANY decision about either Coaching or Signature plans. Call 505-345-3737 or email to set up a time.

Coaching is a special offering for people who are serious about enhancing their programs and would like to have ongoing conversations  Support is provided in a small group with people who are looking at similar concerns.  Kathleen is part of each coaching group. This is not a class but is a process to support your progress. We have added a special chat for people in coaching. It meets twice a week to accommodate those who are in Greenwich Mean Time and those who are in USA time.
Coaching includes several options now: Return to Radiance Coaching for those who have done the steps in the past and then drifted and would like to get back on track. This is a good place to plug in if you have gotten wobbly and would like to restart your program.
Skilled Coaching is for people who are steady on the steps and ready to work on Step 7 life skills.
The fee for either of these coaching options is $20 @ week, billed in 2 week intervals. The coaching is done in an email group and assumes active participation by the members. The process includes peer support with guidance and direction by Kathleen.

Signature Consultations

I also provide individual intensive consultations called Signature Consultation.  I can help you step out of the craziness of sugar addiction, return to steadiness and clarity after slipping away, slow down and focus on your recovery, or deepen a steady rhythm of recovery. This particular option is especially helpful if you did the steps a while ago and then kinda meandered away. Or if you are facing some intense times and would. like skillful support.  But I can tell you that it is a good time to do coaching.
This is a process that includes doing an in-depth assessment of where you are in the process, designing an individual plan for you and then talking with me once a week via phone or Zoom to work on your progress. You will learn to do an efficient journal and to identify your strengths and challenges. I have several packages for time to make it easier for you.
This is the way to step out of feeling overwhelmed with where to start and what to do. Because it is so individualized, we can work on what is right for you at this point in your journey.  People tell me that this process helps them feel safe and focused. We work with your style, your rhythm. This is a unique opportunity to release your fear and let go of shame. The guidance can shorten and ease your process so that in 3 months you will do what you might take a year to do on your own. Signature consultation is also an excellent way to tackle any special needs you may have. like wanting to get sober, or dealing with insulin resistance, integrating doing the food with special medical concerns, or dealing with a sugar sensitive family member in an artful way.

Call 505-345-3737 if you would like to chat.

Testimonial of the Week

I was tired all the time and joints aching and hopeless. I was, and am, fat (280lbs) . After 3 months and on Step 3, I have energy, hope, optimism and feelings of happiness I haven't experienced in a looong time. It is deceptively simple 'on paper' but in action it is an extraordinary process and it is made all the more amazing by the great wealth of kindness and wisdom that people here have shared with me.

I am no longer bingeing. My eating has stabilised and I am feeling more stable than I have in ages. It *is* possible to do this, you will have so much help and support. It *isn't* a phoney fix.

Best wishes in your healing process,

Emma

Rosie's Corner
Kathleen and Rosie
Rosie is in punk mode these days LOL. Her latest antic is chewing open a box in order to have access to the packaging peanuts inside. She was pretty determined. We finally put her in the crate for a time out with a bone. She is sacked out for a bit.
She loves going to Starbucks. The Baristas have tiny cookies for Brody and Rosie. Rosie BARKS when we turn the corner. Yesterday she shark mouthed the hand that was giving her the cookie and I dropped it. She was so upset, but today managed a soft retrieve. Smart little thing.

Vitamin B Complex

I am including what I said last week because I like it LOL

This is the best protein powder on the market. The cows live in New Mexico, eat grass, do not get hormones and are very, very happy. We just don't those claims on the label because if we do, we have to pay more, LOL. And yes, it is more expensive that what you can get at Trader Joe's or Walmart, but this is an artisanal product made in small batches which means it is FRESH and you know exactly where the cows live. And they live in fields of grass and look at New Mexico blue sky. You may not think any of that matter, but taste it and you will understand. And now we do not have sample size packets because they require a run of 50,000 to do that and we simply do not have the cash flow to do it.

Entitlement and Blame

Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

Many people ask me how they *know* that they are on step 7. Is it a date, hit detox, and then wham, there you are? Is it having a perfect program, every step clean and organized and sorted? How can someone on Step 7 muck around or be sloppy with the food journal? Do they have to revert? If they wobble, do they *lose* their status?

Now, what I am going to say here may surprise you. But step 7 is really about a state of being rather than a destination. Step 7 is affectionately called the *getting a life* step, but really, that hardly defines it. It is about how you meet the world and it is radically different from how the world was before you started the program. Let me walk you through the transformation.

I know from lots and lots of experience that the hallmarks of untreated sugar sensitivity are what I call entitlement and blame. We feel done unto. My husband, my boss, my mother, my children, my life, my stress, my health *made me.* You feel victimized by circumstance. It made you be this way. If he hadn't....I wouldn't be this way. You do not take responsibility for what happens around you because you do not feel empowered. You feel helpless in the face of things happening. And you blame the outside world for things not working.

At the same time, because you feel victimized you feel you are entitled to things. Well, I deserve to be...because..they owe me. Often this is the company owes me because I am poor and work hard and they make lots of money. I hear this as I deserve to not have to pay for the program because I am poor and am entitled to it for free.

These feelings, are biochemically induced. Now, that sounds pretty outrageous doesn't it? However, these are the very feelings that change with the program. Working with your journals helps you to see connections, and something called consequence. If I eat this, this happens. No one does it to me. There is a connection between what I do and what happens. You start making little connections..and over time they grow. As you get more steady, you can make more powerful connections.

Yes, my husband is abusive, but I stay here. Things like that. You start seeing yourselves as players rather than victims. And even more striking, when people critique you, you have this remarkable detachment. You take what is real, own it and are even grateful for the feedback rather than being devastated by it. For example, early in the program, if I offer a suggestion, not even a critique, but a simple reflection that perhaps eating a potato the size of a football might not be the best option, the person who started the program 3 days ago is either crushed or outraged that I do not understand their special situation and they go off in a huff or unsubscribe from the program for a year. If I say that to a person in balance, they say *Oh my, whatever was I thinking about. Thank you.*

I listen for this change. Sometimes it comes early. But most often it is the change that tells me most about Step 7 consciousness. One of my leadership people makes a mistake. We have a code for mistakes called the FANTASTIC! Code. They say, *Oh fantastic, let me go clean that one up.* We laugh and it is no bigger than an error to be corrected. Or someone wobbles, and I say, *Hey, how about a sabbatical while you steady up there?* And they say...*yah, yah, let me go catch my breath and tighten up my plan. My timing is off, I am eating out too much.* And they do. Now let me tell you, working and playing with people in this energy is beyond comparison.

You all feel it drifting through. Those of you on the more senior lists drink from the well. Those of you just starting know this is what you want. This is part of radiance, this humor, this joy, this resilience. It is way more than no longer yelling at your kids. It is getting a life. No more blame, lots of taking responsibility. No more entitlement, just humble willingness to work, show up and participate. Pretty nice from where I sit.

Thanks for reading! If you know someone who could benefit from this, feel free to forward it to them.
