Laura,

this is a very interesting question. The key is to reflect on what
is behind the recommendation rather than just how should you follow a rule.

Think about what time you last ate. So if you ate at 6 PM, by 6 AM the next morning,
it has been 12 hours. That is a long time. And when you start pushing the time, your sweet body is going into stress mode which causes a release of beta endorphin so then you feel lean and mean and beuatiful and virtuous. :h11)

If you are lying in bed dozing in and out, your body may stay in sleep mode. But if you are awake and turning on the motor, it is a good idea to have something to eat :h2)

Does this make sense?
