Hi {!firstname_fix}

Well I am settled back in NM after my trip to California. What an adventure that was. I came back to the ten rescue puppies having made the transition from sleeping infants to holy terror puppies. My Christmas tree is safety wrapped in a fence. I have learned once more what it is like to do 5 loads of laundry a day, get up at 4:30 to squealing, hungry babies wanting to eat, and of course the joy of little growls, grunts and soft noises. Yesterday we named them all, put colored ribbons on them and started to track personalities. This morning, the ribbons were off and stepped on, chewed and strewn through their closet. So we got out the clippers and did right rear female, left front male, and tail. It is a lesson of joy and work intertwined.

You will note that I am back writing our feature. I couldn't stand not doing it (smile). The way we learn is to try something and see how it goes. If it is the right thing, it works, if not, we make another adjustment. I need to be writing the feature. We will still have a team of volunteers putting the newsletter together, but I am back in full gear.

And a few other announcements:

We will be moving the discussion of Little Sugar Addicts from the Book Study Group over to the parents list and putting that book study on hold for a bit.

We have taken down the guys list and the GBS list. We are consolidating the kids and teens lists into the youngradiants list.

And I am wondering if we have anyone in the community who is active in OA and is on Step 7 of this program. If that fits you, will you email me at kathleen@radiantrecovery.com.

And, finally, I will give you a complete update on where we stand with all the classes in the next newsletter.

Please feel free to pass this week's newsletter on to your friends and family. Don't forget to let me know what you like and would like to see.

A copy of this newsletter may also be found posted on the web at http://www. radiantrecovery.com/weeklynewsletter. If you wish to unsubscribe, use the link at the bottom of the page. Do not email me, do not get mad at me, just click on the link and you will be forever removed.

And be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery® website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

Learning that you can have positive feelings from a thousand things other than food is a wonderful insight.

** Testimonial for the Week**

Someone tried to break into my car last night. I discovered it this morning when the lock on my driver's side door didn't work. Because of the way I park in my driveway, I also could not get into the passenger side (because I was right up next to an old, very substantial juniper hedge).

*Sigh.* A couple of years ago this would have been cause for a major freakout. Oh, no!!! Lots of DRAMA, poor MEEE, swirling and spinning around, lots of motion but not much traction -- you get the picture! I admit I'm not happy about it, and I'm a little spooked that someone was fooling around on/with my property, but I dealt with all the details this morning just fine. No drama. No freaking out. Just well, okay, step one, step two... I called work to say I would be late, called the auto club, they got a locksmith to let me into my car, called the police and filed a report, called my insurance company, called my landlord, called the dealership. No big deal I was very good-humored with everyone I talked to and it came back to me big time; everyone was SO nice and good-humored back!

I had an estimate for the repair from the locksmith when I went to the dealership and was able to be very DBA about working with them to match the estimate from the locksmith. Took about $80 off the dealer's original price. Wow, I've NEVER done anything like that before!!! THAT was pretty exciting. In times past I would have just taken the car to the dealer and paid whatever they said it cost. But I was nice, they were nice, they can match the estimate from the locksmith, and I think the whole thing can be fixed without much bother at all.

I fully credit my steadiness on this program with being able to handle this situation without a lot of hassle. I absolutely love radiance!

Val

**Recipe of the Week**

Chanukah is almost at an end, but since dairy foods are traditionally served, Naomi thought this recipe would be great. This recipe is so simple that your six year old can make it.  And it is YUMMY!  And, even better it tastes great reheated. You can even have it for breakfast. Mac and cheese is the ultimate comfort food!  This recipe is from The Radiant Recovery Cookbook.

Kathleen's Macaroni and Cheese

4 servings
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2.  Cook pasta according to directions.  Drain well and place in a 1 quart ovenproof mixing bowl.
  3. Add cheese to pasta.  Combine well.
  4. Pour milk over pasta mixture.
  5. Bake 35-45 minutes, or until cheese sauce is bubbling and top of mixture is golden brown.

**Your Last Diet: More Than What You Think**

As most of you know, YLDonline was started to support folks who want to lose weight. The entire program is structured to support our concept that if you heal the body first, then the weight loss will be permanent. In the process of the work, we discovered that some folks are really resistant to losing weight. They have the motivation, the skill and the commitment, but the pounds would not budge. Rather than claiming failure, we took it as an opportunity to learn more. I went and found the last variables we needed for the weight loss resistant. And oh my, are folks getting results. It is so exciting for me to truly know that hope is possible. You do not have to be fat. This is not a magic pill, but it is the ultimate.

I know that many folks are planning on a winter gift of the program. it is a great time to do so because we are just about to start a YLD Book Study Group.

Come and join us!

**Radiant Ambassadors**

I finished most of my holiday shopping today. I bought several items from the Radiant Recovery store, which I love. I ordered more of the wild rice for me and then ordered extra to give to my massage therapist (a very health-oriented lady) and my father, who grew up in Minnesota where the rice is from.

The hardest gift to find each year is for some friends of ours. We exchange small family gifts. One year they got us tea and mugs, another we received a tin of popcorn. It's easier to find a gift for a couple (us) than to find one gift (under $25) for 3 kids and their parents. I used to go for the easy ones - candy, chocolates. This year I decided to stop giving friends and family anything with sugar. I could no longer tell myself that it was ok to give sweets simply because they hadn't chosen to do anything about their own addictions.

I was really stumped on what to get this family until I saw the store. After all, the kids now range from 3rd to 7th grade and cute little toys won't do. So, I bought them cheese snacks and the tiny books. A notepad and snack for each family member. I think they'll get a kick out of the notepads and I'm sure they'll like the cheese snacks. Though I don't eat cheese, I hear these are yummy!

**David's Corner **

People have been calling me all week about putting together special gift packages. We are combining wild rice, the Rice Cookbook, soy milk makers and our own cookbook. OR making up dog packages. And don't forget we have priced Little Sugar Addicts at cost. So if you have any thoughts of giving them as gifts, make sure to catch our special. And call me at 505-345-3737 if you wish special gift pacs made up just for you.

A lot of you have been getting fish oil and EPA. I just wanted to remind you that much of the benefit of these oils comes in thinning your blood - making it less sticky. Sometimes thinning the blood will make you more vulnerable to bruising. If you take pycnogenol this won't happen. It makes the capillaries strong and flexible so you get the best of both worlds. Kathleen suggests you use them in tandem.

Our store has grown because of your requests and input. I like to think of this as the community service store - an interactive opportunity for people who are healing from sugar sensitivity. My brother, Ted, lives in New England. I keep trying to convince him to come out to NM and work with me in the store. He has a business degree and is an ordained minister. He does eBay on the side and is very entrepreneurial. But he loves his teaching job and I just can't convince him yet.

Please send questions and suggestions.I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

Thanks
David

And of course, we have something for everybody in our store

**Our Online Groups**

RadiantBigOnes is the first list I joined when I first found this community and I never left. (smile) A "BigOne" is a person who has 100 or more pounds to lose. The list is unique in that we don't just focus on food challenges -- although getting 42 grams of protein at a meal can certainly be a challenge! -- but we also share information and support for issues that non-BigOnes may not even realize are an issue in day-to-day life. I love the interaction on this list because everyone is so supportive of everyone else and we learn so much from each other. We have people on the list who are in various stages of the 7 Steps, so if you're a BigOne, you'll fit right in!

**Feature Article **
A Celebration of Light

Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

Hanukkah is here. I have been lighting candles. New Mexico is very dark at night. The sky is clear and you can see light from very far away. I love seeing the candles as I stand outside and look in the house. Today Harold is up on the roof putting the reindeer up. You can see them from all the way down the street. It makes me smile when I come home at night.

This month is the time of deepest darkness. We have these special days, days of celebrating that even in the darkness, a tiny spot of light can be seen. Many folks have wobbled and relapsed this month. And the feelings of relapse are always the fear and desperation that we all know so well. Christmas filled with sugar and treats is a double edged sword. We think those things are such a part of celebrating and that just a little won't matter. We think we will just *celebrate* and then January first we will once again make the resolve to clean it up and do it.

Today, I am going to invite you to try something new. Do not wait until January first, but today start holding the idea of light coming. Each choice we make can build more light. And connecting here to others who are committed and willing and gaining skill is a mighty tool. The loving and funny conversations on the forum will support you and hold you up. The diabetes list is humming, the breakfast list is coming up with ideas that excite even me, and the pets are plotting. We recently had a bird join the cats and dogs on the pet list. My, oh my, are the conversations lively. And Ranger who is no stranger to danger keeps regaling up with his tales.

Humor and connection heal us. I believe that all the traditions that remember the light at this time of year can help us remember our own inner light. Sometimes it feels that the draw is to spending money and struggling, or rushing around, but it is a time to reflect on healing. No matter what the circumstances you are in this year, invite the light and ask that it fill you.
