Lilacs blooming
April 5, 2020,

Hi {!firstname_fix},
Last week it was the daffodils, this week the lilacs are blooming. They are just starting at my house. During the week they will open and then the whole yard will be fragrant. It always feels like spring when the lilacs open.
Everything is quiet these days. We have continued our cleaning and clearing projects. The tool shed is cleaned and sorted and labeled. The yards are weeded, my office is organized. Nothing has been pressured, we have just been doing bits and bobs each day. And it has progressed without our being overwhelmed.
We are continuing the class on transforming fear. I think we are doing level many levels. We started with the knowledge base and then dropped into some deep feelings, then paused and regrouped and we are back processing once more. You are still welcome to come by. All the discussions are posted by lesson so you can start at the beginning, move at your own pace and read what people are sharing.
It is so interesting to me how sugar affects the fear response. What we think comforts us actually creates the problem. I have been saying that since the beginning of the program, but it seems to be even more true today. But I love the conversations and I have reconnected on a number of the quiet lists. I promised the parents' list I would share some of the creative ideas Andrew has packed away since his camp counselor days. I didn't get to it today, it was too beautiful outside not to be in the sunshine.
I read an incredible book this week called We Must be Brave. It is set in the UK at the end of the second world war. The story is deeply touching and the characters are wonderful. I couldn't put it down. So if you are looking for a special read, get it.
I hope you are all staying safe. Remember this is not a lockdown. We are sheltering in place to keep our friends and neighbors as safe as possible. I am sending you all right and love.

WORKING WITH KATHLEEN
Coaching is a special offering for people who are serious about enhancing their programs and would like to have ongoing coaching. Kathleen personally runs the coaching groups. This is not a class but is a process to support your progress. We have added a special chat for people in coaching. It meets twice a week to accommodate those who are in Greenwich Mean Time and those who are in USA time.
Coaching includes several options now: Return to Radiance Coaching for those who have done the steps in the past and then drifted and would like to get back on track. Skilled Coaching is for people who are steady on the steps and ready to work on Step 7 life skills.
If you wish to join sign up for coaching and then we can talk about which section to join.

I also provide individual intensive coaching called Signature Coaching.  It can help you step out of the craziness of sugar addiction, return to steadiness and clarity after slipping away, slow down and focus on your recovery, or deepen a steady rhythm of recovery.
This is a 3 month process that includes doing an in-depth assessment of where you are in the process, designing an individual plan for you and then meeting once a week via phone or Skype to work on your progress.
This is the way to step out of feeling overwhelmed with where to start and what to do. Because it is so individualized, we can work on what is right for you at this point in your journey.  People tell me that coaching helps them feel safe and focused. We work with your style, your rhythm. This is a unique opportunity to release your fear and let go of shame. The guidance can shorten and ease your process so that in 3 months you will do what you might take a year to do on your own. Signature coaching is also an excellent way to tackle any special needs you may have. like wanting to get sober, or dealing with insulin resistance, or special medical concerns.

Testimonial of the Week

Someone tried to break into my car last night. I discovered it this morning when the lock on my driver's side door didn't work. Because of the way I park in my driveway, I also could not get into the passenger side (because I was right up next to an old, very substantial juniper hedge).

*Sigh.* A couple of years ago this would have been cause for a major freakout. Oh, no!!! Lots of DRAMA, poor MEEE, swirling and spinning around, lots of motion but not much traction -- you get the picture! I admit I'm not happy about it, and I'm a little spooked that someone was fooling around on/with my property, but I dealt with all the details this morning just fine. No drama. No freaking out. Just well, okay, step one, step two... I called work to say I would be late, called the auto club, they got a locksmith to let me into my car, called the police and filed a report, called my insurance company, called my landlord, called the dealership. No big deal I was very good-humored with everyone I talked to and it came back to me big time; everyone was SO nice and good-humored back!

I had an estimate for the repair from the locksmith when I went to the dealership and was able to be very DBA about working with them to match the estimate from the locksmith. Took about $80 off the dealer's original price. Wow, I've NEVER done anything like that before!!! THAT was pretty exciting. In times past I would have just taken the car to the dealer and paid whatever they said it cost. But I was nice, they were nice, they can match the estimate from the locksmith, and I think the whole thing can be fixed without much bother at all.

I fully credit my steadiness on this program with being able to handle this situation without a lot of hassle. I absolutely love radiance!

Hoof Alive Hand Care
We all are washing our hands a lot. my mom remembered that she had some Hoof Alive in the cabinet and decided to try it to sooth the dryness. The result was spectataclar. She asked me to call our supplier to send us some because she wanted to remind you how effective this product is. He sent along a copy of a note he had from a woman whose daughter is infectious diseases at Johns Hopkins. Her comment was
* You have to Moisturize dry hands from so much washing them, because
the molecules can hide in the micro cracks. The thicker the moisturizer, the better.
When I called to order they asked me what size, the 16 oz one? I said "Yes, that is good." The next day, they called back to confirm and we realized the 16 oz was for people with horses. We changed it to the 4 oz size. It is thick, I assure you. Don't put it on just before you need to use your keyboard, it takes a little to sink in. But honestly, I am with Mom on this product. Get it!

Your Last Diet: More Than What You Think
Your Last Diet Book Cover

Here is a wonderful quote from Mosaic. I think we can all relate. It is so wonderful to be free of this.

I am so glad you are laughing! You must be healing! My daftest bit was thinking that if I got on slower it might say a lower number, and leaning over 10 times trying to get the dratted thing to say something different. Not to mention cutting my nails and taking my contact lenses out, the last actually quite helpful as I couldn't focus at all.

'Course, with my manipulations, if I ever shifted it down half a pound, I'd go round pleased all day, or if it had the cheek to go up it would be all gloom and doom.

I'm so glad that's all over. Isn't it totally amazing what the steps will cure!

What This Community is Really About

by Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

Twenty years ago,  the first edition of Potatoes not Prozac was being published and I was committed to setting up a web site which would provide a way for sugar sensitive people to come together and share their paths to healing. I spent a long time finding a marketing group to help me set up the site. they asked me my goals. How much money did I want to make? What sort of income stream was I looking for? They were confused by my plan and didn't understand why making money was not at the top of my list. You want to build *community?* they asked. I explained that I wanted to create a healing web. I wanted to provide a way for people to learn new things and to share their journeys. I wanted people to connect and know the power in working together. Sugar sensitivity and addiction flourish in isolation. Healing comes with connection.

This was before social media. We had no Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pineterst, Blogs, YouTube, Vimeo, Steam, Reddit, Google, or  Zoom, it did not exist. They had no idea what I was talking about. But I had a clear vision and knew exactly what I wanted.

So we started. A web site with 20 pages. Mostly informational. A few months later, we put up the community forum and people started talking. You asked for ways to share on specialized topics. We set up an elist for depression. You asked for more and the resources grew. We transitioned to Yahoo Groups and built discussion lists. I answered every email and listened to your concerns and struggles and dreams.

As the mail poured in and the lists grew, I wanted to make sure the tone was clear and we stayed on focus. I formed a leadership team and invited a few folks who were further along in the process to help. The volunteer service base of the community was born. We named this team the Radiant Council, Rad for short. Each person had responsibility for an elist and was willing to meet with me online once a week to talk about how things were going. We learned to do team. We learned to trust one another and to work through style differences. We started the first Ranch and I invited the leadership team to come and meet one another in person. I think we got hooked on the joy of working together.

The lists increased and 15 people could no longer do it all. We expanded the leadership team to include more volunteers. We had a liaison for each list. And then we doubled up. We met once a week, diligently showing up for work and play. We shared our programs, we critiqued ourselves and matured along with the community. People coming in were given a warm welcome. Connections were made. Boundaries were defined about the style of communication. No flaming was allowed and we created a safe place. This was hard work. Sugar sensitive people are notoriously sensitive and reactive when they are starting out.

I wrote a few more books. I started Your Last Diet Online because the marketing guys thought it would be a good experiment. We started chatting and the original idea of *weight loss* expanded to include discovery and exploration about what weight loss might really mean. This was and still is so exciting that I look forward to Wednesday night with a smile. Talk about connection!!

Now we have more than 8,000 people continuing to be connected to the community. The idea of sugar addiction is mainstream. Scientific research has confirmed the hypothesis I wrote about in 1998. People expect community. We are still here. We are not flashy, but we have persisted and adapted. Things are quieter now,  Close to  a million letters have been posted to the web site. That be a lot of talking and a lot of healing. I have learned that the web is the perfect way to connect people. Doesn't matter who you are or where you live. If you can get on line, you can be part of the miracle of community. We laugh about issues in Perth or Oslo or Atlanta, Tibet, Aberdeen or San Diego. We are so much alike, sometimes it is scary. Our differences make us grow.

And in this time, a time that is scary beyond anything any of us have lived through before, we have learned to come together, to get and centered and to support one another. We have learned to replace fear with moments of joy that stream into us regardless of the craziness swirling around outside.. And those tiny dots creep in and wash out the fear, and fill us with trust and patience in waiting for the healing to come.

I LOVE this community. I feel blessed by your energy, wisdom and care. Thank you!!!
