Hi {!firstname_fix},
Ok, it has been two weeks since Ranch was over. I think a lot got worked loose and we have all been in a little shock for the last week. It surprised me that we could create something so powerful on Zoom. I think the impact of "global" was way bigger than I imagined. Somehow sitting in front of a screen that had names and places attached to faces in an of itself was a little mind boggling. had we said nothing, we would have come away changed from that.
    Last week I wrote this:
We talked about  psychic fatigue and slipping away from routine or sticking with route that was life saving. It was a profound combination of unbelievable simplicity and depth - at the same time. The story is not new.  I have always said, if you do the program, really do it for a week, your cells will remember. And if you come together with other people you will remember more deeply.
    Then I said
Look for our new ideas emerging. I will post them here.
LOL, That is what I thought would happen. In reality, I had not new ideas, I was just flat out tired. Then I got angry. I was angry about 50 years ago, I was angry about yesterday, I was angry about who knows what. And anger is not my default. So that was curious. I am emotionally skilled enough to know that I hadn't turned into an angry person, but simply some rocks had been moved by the experience and water was flowing through places it hadn't been.
I talked with people who could listen and not be freaked or make things bigger (or smaller). I wrote, I listened, I read. And now things are still again and the reflection will have a little more distance. And today is my birthday. It makes me laugh that everyone else is excited and I am think, "oh god, another year gone by. Why are they slipping by so quickly, LOL"
I have a special article for you. Make sure to go down to read it :)

Let me know if you have questions or ideas.

WORKING WITH KATHLEEN
Coaching is a special offering for people who are serious about enhancing their programs and would like to have ongoing coaching. Support is provided in a small group with people who are looking at similar concerns.  Kathleen is part of each coaching group. This is not a class but is a process to support your progress. We have added a special chat for people in coaching. It meets twice a week to accommodate those who are in Greenwich Mean Time and those who are in USA time.  If you are just starting, own the Step lists to learn the basics.
Coaching includes several options now: Return to Radiance Coaching for those who have done the steps in the past and then drifted and would like to get back on track. This is a good place to plug in if you have gotten wobbly and would like to restart your program.

Skilled Coaching is for people who are steady on the steps and ready to work on Step 7 life skills.

The fee for these three coaching options is $20 @ week, billed in 2 week intervals. The coaching is done in an email group and assumes active participation by the members. The process includes peer support with guidance and direction by Kathleen.

If you wish to join coaching send an email and say what you are interested in and why.

I am interested in coaching

I also provide individual intensive coaching called Signature Coaching.  I can help you step out of the craziness of sugar addiction, return to steadiness and clarity after slipping away, slow down and focus on your recovery, or deepen a steady rhythm of recovery. This particular option is especially helpful if you did the steps a while ago and then kinda meandered away. Or if you are facing some intense times and would. like skillful support.  But I can tell you that it is a good time to do coaching.
This is a 3 month process that includes doing an in-depth assessment of where you are in the process, designing an individual plan for you and then talking with me once a week via phone or Zoom to work on your progress. You will learn to do an efficient journal and to identify your strengths and challenges.
This is the way to step out of feeling overwhelmed with where to start and what to do. Because it is so individualized, we can work on what is right for you at this point in your journey.  People tell me that coaching helps them feel safe and focused. We work with your style, your rhythm. This is a unique opportunity to release your fear and let go of shame. The guidance can shorten and ease your process so that in 3 months you will do what you might take a year to do on your own. Signature coaching is also an excellent way to tackle any special needs you may have. like wanting to get sober, or dealing with insulin resistance, or integrating doing the food with special medical concerns.
And in fact, we have developed some creative personalized plans especially suited to where people are in the program and what will work best to support them. Call 505-345-3737 if you would like to chat.

Testimonial of the Week

Claire, I'm just catching up on posts, but I love what the others have said. I started the program first and used the questions the children asked me as opportunities for education. When I was steady on step 7 for a while, we started the children on breakfast.

We started to change our language to reflect the program. Sugar was no longer a "treat", but trips to the library and spending time with friends was our new "treat". I gave them decision-making power within the parameters of the program, "We have to eat a protein and a brown, which one would you like today?" Helping the children realize how they feel after they eat whites and sugar was helpful for us as well.

I hope this is helpful. This group has been a great resource for me.

Radiant Recovery Store
David Smiling
David, my oldest son, runs our store. He makes sure your orders go out quickly and works with you to find the best things suited to where you are in your process.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.  This week I am giving you some information about Vitamin D. I get regular emails from grass roots health. I think they are incredibly knowledgeable and trustworthy. They are quoting studies about the impact of Vitamin D on COVID outcomes. My suggestion is to get tested (through them or your own health care provider) and the  get your levels up to 40-60 ng/ml.  This is why we are carrying this product. Read their website. Vitamin D levees are highly productive of positive outcomes for COVID.

Come visit our STORE. Call 505-345-3737.

Your Last Diet: More Than What You Think
Your Last Diet Book Cover

I am feeling settled with YLD these days.  People are having fun, getting out of diet head and having some major success.

Even more exciting is what is happening with chats. The Euro chats are funny. The Monday chat is a delight. I love the questions and answers that are coming out from that chat. They are so helpful. And Wednesday evening continues to be the highlight of my week. Last week we tried really hard to *work* but we started having so much fun, it was hard to stay on task. It is pretty amazing to think how far we have come. Chats used to be serious stuff. People were anxious and overwhelmed by being fat. Now the culture is one of such hope. We have a solution that we know works. Our task has become simply to help people stay focused on the doing. It is so exciting to watch.

If you are not a YLD member, come and join us. Click here if you are ready to change your life or just plain ole have fun. It is not too late to get into the classes if you come right now

Another look at Commitment

Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

Every week, I get many letters from people who feel inadequate, overwhelmed, fat, out of control and unable to do the program. Or I get letters from people who feel buffeted by the stress in their lives. People have died, work is demanding, no time, no space, no capacity to “do” anything but get by. And in the last few years this has gotten worse and worse.

And each time I say, “These feelings are caused by being out of balance. The stress does not create the feelings, your biochemistry does.” When you are balanced, you respond to stress differently, it becomes functional rather than overwhelming. You stand in the center of the swirl with a sense of calm and clarity about priorities and demands. And when you are not balanced, that idea seems totally off the wall.

When you are in the middle of what I call sugar feelings, you will be reactive and feel done to. You will feel like a victim. You will feel like you can do nothing right. And of course it seems like these feelings are REAL because it is what you feel. And when you feel that way, you need something to help you hold them, so you get ice cream and soda. And you feel better for a little while. Life is manageable for a few minutes and you are seduced into thinking that this is comfort. But what you think is comforting you is the cause of what you are feeling. It is a deadly, seductive dance.

When you are in that place, the idea of the “program” seems totally overwhelming. No, you cannot give up sugar. No, you cannot manage to plan anything. I just don’t get it! You feel it is just too big and too unattainable. It is too much so you need to just give up and feel that nothing will work.

So, here is the bottom line. This program can not only save your life, it can transform it. It can make you clear and steady. It can give you a platform for losing weight. But it cannot work its magic unless you do it. And you do not have to do it all at once. You do not have to be perfect or rigorous or disciplined. You can come, you can whine, you can stumble. But if you show up, you ask for help and you listen, and then you follow instructions, things will change.

Sugar sensitive people are notorious for not listening. We think we know it better. We think that we are unique, a special case and the plain ole boring do the steps slowly and in order does not really fit our situation. That way of thinking has to go. If you want what we have, do what we do. We do the steps. We have breakfast every morning, on time. We journal. We eat meals on time. We have enough protein for our body. We take the vitamins and eat the potato. We eat whole grains and we do not have sugar. We are funny, focused and purposeful.

And we are NOT different from you. We were there in that dark, horrible place. Every single one of us, including me, has been there. And it is a place we do not want to go back to. The way out was not magic. It was showing up and “doing”. Doing breakfast, doing journal. Doing potato. One choice at a time. One day at a time.

As I said last week, “Nodding will not heal you.” Agreement will not make change. Commitment makes change. You do not have to live that way any more. Come on over and let’s do this together.  And starting at the beginning, and doing one small thing at a time will heal you.
