Hi {!firstname_fix},
Well, that is a picture of the cover of the new edition of Potatoes Not Prozac in RUSSIAN .  It is pretty exciting. Actually, it is a little mind boggling to be honest. I have never even seen a book in Russian in my life. So the idea that this is "my" book kinda makes me tear up.
Once I got a letter from a woman who lived in Tibet. She told me that the book had changed her life. She told me the exact same story that so many of you had told me - what life was like as a sugar addict. And how things had changes since she did the steps. I was very humbled by the idea of someone in Tibet doing the food. But in reality, each and every one of you makes me feel that way.
The steps and learning how to eat this way to heal our brains is a gift for all of us. This past week I have been talking to a number of people who are finally coming out from COVID fog and beginning to get back to some semblance of a normal life. And everyone, every single person has said that "doing the food" has kept them steady and kept them sane.
I am glad that the Step One list is alive and vital. The energy is streaming. New people are arriving, old people are coming back. And the story is just the same as it was the very first day that the very first edition was published.
Nice to reconnect. I am sorry for the gap in getting a newsletter out to you. I just kinda lost energy and focus and every week had the intention and every week just couldn't do it.

A Dog Update
Cooper hiking in the mountains
A number of you have asked me about how the "dogs are doing". I will give you an update about the house doggies next week. Today I just want to tell you about Cooper, a 18 month dog who had been kept in a crate 24/7 because he was a "bad" dog. He was not a bad dog, he was just a teenager. We found him a home. Here is his life now. It is why I do rescue.

WORKING WITH KATHLEEN
People have been asking for a long time how they might be able to work with me directly. We wanted to set up something that was accessible and affordable so we designed a system of coaching that seems to be working well. If you are serious about enhancing your program and would like to have ongoing coaching, this might be a good option. Support is provided in a small group with people who are looking at similar concerns.  I am in each coaching group. This is not a class but is a process to support your progress. The process includes peer support with my  guidance and direction.
Coaching includes several options now: Return to Radiance Coaching for those who have done the steps in the past and then drifted and would like to get back on track. This is a good place to plug in if you have gotten wobbly and would like to restart your program.
Skilled Coaching is for people who are steady on the steps and ready to work on Step 7 life skills.

The fee for these three coaching options is $20 @ week, billed in 2 week intervals.  If you wish to join coaching send an email and say what you are interested in and why.

I am interested in coaching

I also provide individual one on one intensive coaching called Signature Coaching.  I can help you step out of the craziness of sugar addiction, return to steadiness and clarity after slipping away, slow down and focus on your recovery, or deepen a steady rhythm of recovery. This particular option is especially helpful if you did the steps a while ago and then kinda meandered away. Or if you are facing some intense times and would. like skillful support.

Signature coaching offers several options. Most people do a 3 month process that includes doing an in-depth assessment of where you are in the process, designing an individual plan for you and then talking with me once a week via phone or Zoom to work on your progress. You will learn to do an efficient journal and to identify your strengths and challenges.  Other people chose to do a month long intensive to get a sense of whether the process is suited to their style. And some people continue to work beyond the initial 3 months in special arrangements we work out for their budget and progress. All signature coaching starts with an initial assessment meeting at no charge to you. This time allows us to collaborate on the best way to work with your food and style.
This is the way to step out of feeling overwhelmed with where to start and what to do. Because it is so individualized, we can work on what is right for you at this point in your journey.  People tell me that coaching helps them feel safe and focused. We work with your style, your rhythm. This is a unique opportunity to release your fear and let go of shame. The guidance can shorten and ease your process so that in 3 months you will do what you might take a year to do on your own. Signature coaching is also an excellent way to tackle any special needs you may have. like wanting to get sober, or dealing with insulin resistance, or integrating doing the food with special medical concerns.
And in fact, we have developed some creative personalized plans especially suited to where people are in the program and what will work best to support them. You can go here to learn more about it.  Call 505-345-3737 if you would like more information.

Testimonial for the Week

Someone tried to break into my car last night. I discovered it this morning when the lock on my driver's side door didn't work. Because of the way I park in my driveway, I also could not get into the passenger side (because I was right up next to an old, very substantial juniper hedge).

*Sigh.* A couple of years ago this would have been cause for a major freakout. Oh, no!!! Lots of DRAMA, poor MEEE, swirling and spinning around, lots of motion but not much traction -- you get the picture! I admit I'm not happy about it, and I'm a little spooked that someone was fooling around on/with my property, but I dealt with all the details this morning just fine. No drama. No freaking out. Just well, okay, step one, step two... I called work to say I would be late, called the auto club, they got a locksmith to let me into my car, called the police and filed a report, called my insurance company, called my landlord, called the dealership. No big deal I was very good-humored with everyone I talked to and it came back to me big time; everyone was SO nice and good-humored back!

I had an estimate for the repair from the locksmith when I went to the dealership and was able to be very DBA about working with them to match the estimate from the locksmith. Took about $80 off the dealer's original price. Wow, I've NEVER done anything like that before!!! THAT was pretty exciting. In times past I would have just taken the car to the dealer and paid whatever they said it cost. But I was nice, they were nice, they can match the estimate from the locksmith, and I think the whole thing can be fixed without much bother at all.

I fully credit my steadiness on this program with being able to handle this situation without a lot of hassle. I absolutely love radiance!

We have continued to hold chats. Each Wed night we get together and talk about the process of body image and how weight loss [or not] fits in. T Chats used to be serious stuff. People were anxious and overwhelmed by being fat. We no longer feel that way. We have a solution that we know works. Our task has become simply to help people stay focused on the doing.

Here is a quote from a YLD member:

It has been quite a while since I checked in with you folks. It was not because I wasn't following the plan or had lost interest. Life was unusually stressful from early Dec to the present and I have been putting "stress management" at the top of my agenda. I continue to be absolutely in awe of what Kathleen has discovered. I feel I have found "my home" - a place where I feel at peace with my body. I weighed myself today for the first time in 2 months - I have lost 10-12 pounds since starting on this journey with you. And, more importantly, I feel so good in my body. I've read with interest what some of you have been saying about the loss of emotional energy around weight loss. This feeling of being OK with where I am now - no, not just OK, but radiant - is incredible.

I did post a instruction sheet for how to get to chat. It is in the files at the YLD email list online.  We are working on making it simpler and easier to get in. Please call me at 505-345-3737 if you have any trouble with it.

Restoring Your Brain after Stimulant Use

Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

As I have said in my recent articles, I believe the last year has a much larger psychic impact that simply being housebound for many months. The emotional impact is huge and the stress and pressure of living through the pandemic has jostled us on a deep level. I liken it to a constant dopamine bombardment for many months and the neurological impact would be the same as stimulant yes for all that time.

I have worked with a large number of folks who are trying to crawl back to sanity after detoxing from stimulant addiction. This includes things like cocaine, methamphetamine, diet pills, ephedrine drinks, psuedopepipephrine drinks, Sudafed, caffeine, Ritalin, or NutraSweet products. It also includes screen time including gaming, bingeing on Netflix or YouTube.I have gone back to the literature to refresh my own understanding. It was fascinating to see that in the mid 80's psychologists decided that "behavioral" addictions actually work pretty much in the same pathways as drug addictions. I think the behaviors that ping dopamine are difficult to deal with because the impact is so intense. This article is about what you can do to help restore your brain.

All of these substances activate or cause to be activated a brain chemical called dopamine. Dopamine makes you feel bright, clear, focused and functional. When you first start using these substances or behaviors, you feel like you can take on the world. After a while, your brain adjusts and you simply feel normal after use and very discombobulated when the effect wears off. Addiction sets in when you start needing your substance in order to stave off the withdrawal.

Withdrawal from these substances makes you feel just the opposite. You feel dull, foggy, sludgy, torpid, teary, scattered and incapable of functioning. Cranky, very cranky. And as soon as you get your drug, even if it is a Diet Coke, you feel better. Stimulant addiction is seductive. You feel so fine when you are using and so bad when you are not, it is almost inconceivable to imagine not having it.

But, part of you has known that it is progressive and you are feeling worse. You may not have though about COVID fear time as a stimulant equivalent. You no longer have times of feeling good, and a particular kind of bone weary exhaustion started setting in. You had to up the dose, or shorten the time between your fixes. What started as one latte in the morning became a triple in the morning and a single in the afternoon just to function. You knew you were in trouble and decided it was time to get off.

Doing the steps helped to get you to this place. You have been reasonably steady with your food and you were ready to get out from under this addiction. For the sake of this discussion, I am going to assume you have stopped using and you feel pretty crappy. This is a how to intervention to hold you up and restore your brain so that your willingness to get clean can stick over time.

There are some very specific changes you are going to make over a 3-month period to get your old brain back. [and yes, you will get back to normal!]

  1. Increase your protein intake to .6 - .8 grams per pound of your body weight. But play with it to see what has the best effect. Work into it. Do not make this change all at once. You are working to increase the level of large neutral amino acids, particularly one called tyrosine. Tyrosine is the precursor to dopamine just like tryptophan is the precursor to serotonin. Do not just go get some tyrosine [you see I know the addict's mind, LOL]. You want the package that comes with protein meals. 1
  2. In the early weeks of your detox, you may want to add a protein snack mid morning and mid afternoon.  George's® Restore is great for this.
  3. If you are already on Step Four, increase the size of your potato at night. Serotonin reduces the craving for stimulants. If you start having wild or hallucinogenic dreams, simply cut back some. Find the edge so you are getting restorative and restful dreaming and not getting uncomfortable dreams.2
  4. Take omega 3 fatty acids with a high concentration of EPA/DHA. These fatty acids are abundant in the membranes that are associated with synaptic function the place where the neurotransmitters talk with one another. Increasing the omega 3s helps restore this function. Check the radiantrecoverystore for the brands and products I use.3
  5. If you are feeling particularly edgy or cranky, take a hot shower. If you have access to a a hot tub, go for a soak. Warmth helps quiet dopamine withdrawal.

Make a concerted effort to stay away from foods that are high in omega 6 fatty acids things like margarine and saturated fats [butter, cream, and meat fat] Eat foods high in omega 3 like cold water fishes such as salmon.

In your early phase, you may find it helpful to supplement with omega 3 fish oils capsules like the ones we sell in the store.

If you are taking fish oil, it will tend to thin your blood. Sometimes this will make you more vulnerable to bruising. I have found that the antioxidant pycnogenol helps with this by strengthening capillary walls. I added this product to our store as a nice adjunct to the fish oil.
