Actually the chat room is not the Yahoo chat room so if you are trying to go there, that could be one of the problems.

The instructions of what you need to do are in the YLD manual at

Click on the link for the Manual, and in the manual it gives the link and should tell you what you need for chat. The main thing that needs to be up to date is Java. And you will need Adobe Reader to read the manual. But the web page and manual tell you how to get both.
