July 11, 2011

Hi {!firstname_fix}

Well, it is that time of year again. My friends and I did our annual trek to the Santa Fe Opera. This year we saw La Boheme. It was incredible. We had a picnic beforehand. Kinda like tailgating before a football game, although a little more upscale. We didn't do a candelabra or wine in crystal goblets. Our table cloth was the clean dog mat from the back of my car. But the food was spectacular and we had Pellegrino in bistro glasses. It is a fun event and we love the party.

It was hard to see the smoke from all the fires on the way up. NM is tinder dry. It is very unnerving. Call the rain fairies on our behalf please.

This class will begin Wednesday, July 13, 2011. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Brain Chemistry: Beta Endorphin (2 weeks) is one of our most popular classes. It will teach you the core of the science behind the program. This is the outline for a critical part of sugar sensitivity, why you act the way you do and what you can do to change it. I love this class and so do all the people who have taken it. Somehow BE rocks!

Step 7 Journaling (2 weeks) - is designed for senior people in the Radiant Recovery Community to explore in-depth journaling issues. If you are interested in looking at exciting ways to make your journal come alive, this is your class. This class will also be a fun place for us to be testing ideas for our new weight loss journal. Come join us!

** Testimonial of the Week **

I'm glad you posted. I can reply to some of your post..

I remember being on early step 6 and being concerned that all the monitoring of sugar was like an eating disorder. When I first stopped dieting, I remember the freedom of finally eating anything I wanted. But I still couldn't manage a working, easy relationship with sugar, even with that total freedom. And I tried for quite a few years. My moods were all over, my weight would fluctuate, I didn't quite feel right. But I didn't want to diet ever again.

The freedom for me is now on step 7. I had a conversation with someone about this topic last weekend. Sometimes the best freedom comes from structure. Like in music, just playing all the notes anytime don't make the same quality of sound that using the structures of form and keys do. And kids doing whatever they want isn't as good for them as having guidelines from parents.

Another benefit of step 7 is that it stabilizes the brain as well as the body. So a lot of those Fat thoughts just disappear. I feel so much freedom now, so much more than I ever had eating "whatever I wanted." I don't want those things at all. I want joy, stability, ease of life.

Dizzy and blue doesn't sound good. Dizzy, you might be under hydrated.

I can't speak to marathon training as I haven't done one. But snacks should include a protein and a brown. Almonds are just protein. Can you come up with a complex carb to go with them? Almond butter on bread or whole grain crackers would even work.

The "rigidity" of RR seems to me like an initial learning investment. It takes time and concentration to get it, but then it's like coasting after a while. Even eating out has become simple now. I don't think about food other than being excited for meals when they come. I do plan, but even that doesn't use emotional energy.

And finally, as always, what's for breakfast these days?

Hands up how many of you have blogs? Well, we might just have come up with another great idea for spreading the word (when I say 'we', I actually mean Teresa LOL!)

Teresa came across the following site while reading somebody's blog:

http://www.shelfari.com

It allows bloggers to add a cute little bookshelf to the side of your blog on which you can add virtual books that you enjoy. It also allows you to add a review!

I've added it to my own blog and it looks kinda cute!

Anybody else fancy adding one of their own?

** How I Found Radiant Recovery **

Hi Everyone!

I'm from Montana and have just completed a year-long process with my healthcare provider in which I practiced all seven steps in different ways than how they are sequenced in PNP.

I'm here to continue my healing by following the sequence and taking advantage of the Radiant Resources. I solidified Step 1 last summer and I love maintaining Step 2 with my four different colored ink pens. I'm finally loving Step 3 and will be happy to delve into Step 4 now.

Peace and Goodness,
Beckita

Grant’s Kale Recipe

Boil the kale for 3 minutes.

Then toss it in a wok or similar with some sesame seeds (which you will have dry fried briefly) and a bit of lemon juice. Mix it up, stir it around for a minute and you are done.

** Radiant Conversations **

Here is a fun post from Mel.

I have always been serious. Play got on my nerves, frivolity irritated me, and laughter was an annoyance. I know that Kathleen is onto something big with this play and sleep thing.

I know you are still raw and reactive, and that ties in with the play thing. I always felt that I had to fight fight fight to assert myself as an individual with opinions and gravitas.

Always seeing the funny side as I satired gave an illusion of play, but that was deeply serious too, and all about what was wrong with society and the world.

I didn't flick a switch and lighten up, but slowly the darkness broke up.

I still have no time or inclination really for crafts, but I started cooking, and that's a win win.

I think she has captured these *other* things that are such a part of recovery. Play, fun, lightening up. Somehow it is like those little *joys* that brightened up the depression list.

** Our Online Groups **

The Radiant Step Two list is a source of helpful information and support with journaling. On this list we talk about how to get started with the journal, how to start listening to our body and why giving it a voice is so important. We also discuss how to use the journal for detective work in our program and, of course, how to make journaling fun! Right now the list is rockin' with people supporting each other and making big discoveries with their journal. So whether you are just starting out or are looking for a recharge in your journaling, come on over and join in the fun!

Or come to the group page to find the one that will best support your program: http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm

**Structure as Antidote **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

Many people come to Radiant Recovery saying they are already doing most of the steps and just need to add a potato. I often suggest they get a copy of the talk I did at ranch in 2007 about what else is embedded in the steps. That discussion goes through each step and outlines the biochemical changes encoded in each step. But there is another key issue – one I haven’t really talked about. Structure antidotes blind lurching.

When we are in active addiction, it is as if we lose our center and we stop being grounded. We lurch from one thing to another. Maybe from diet to diet, job to job, person to person, place to place or interest to interest. We have 6 knitting and crafts projects going on. We present ourselves as creative and curious, liking to try new things. We collect little things like offices supplies or pens in case we need them. We lurch and resist being pinned down.

We might say that structure ties us down, thwarts our creativity. Structure seems dull and old fashioned. It seems routine and boring and who would want to do that. Nowhere in our brain have we thought of our behavior as lurching. We never really thought that a little of this and a little of that might be saying something about our sugar addiction.

Why is it that we dream big and stay small? Why is it that those sparks of insight and knowing sputter and fade rather than bursting into our passionate flame?

My hunch is that we have avoided the gift of structure. We haven’t considered that structure, doing things in an intentional order might actually shape us. And it might change the lurching to intention. If you do this, you will get this result.

Now think about that. For so many years, we have worked how to forget the consequence of our actions. We forget that if we eat sugar, or skip meals we get cranky and unpleasant. We forget that we lose direction and we lurch. We forget a lot.

So when we have structure, we stop lurching and we do not lose direction. Even early on in the program, when we are still forgetting because of our biochemistry, the structure itself guides us. The steps, those funny steps, lead us into intention. They guide us with if you do this, you will change. If you do these steps, you will have a life you cannot imagine. Everything will shift. And it will shift in ways beyond anything you have considered.

Now, many of you may feel that this is simply talk. It is not. We now have enough people who are doing the steps for a long enough time that it is really, really clear that there is a developmental pattern that emerges very predictably over time. The promises we make happen.

The steps are bigger than the food. Don’t think of changing them. Do them, do them and get the miracle.
