Hi {!firstname_fix}

The air has changed to fall air. Mornings are different. Softer. The light is different. I like it.

Things are buzzing with preparation for EuroRanch. I think it is the nature of sugar sensitives to think more about the food than the content, LOL. We have lots of new people coming, so I know it will be very special.

I totally get it. And baby steps are wonderful!

I remember being accused of being selfish when I was a teenager, and perhaps I was at the time. But I've now found there's a huge difference between being selfish and practicing self-care.

It has taken a long time to get here but I have figured out that I *am* a worthwhile person and I do get to make my own choices and have my own opinion and take care of my self. And you do too.

** Radiant Ambassadors **

Where do you imagine Radiant Recovery will be in, say, 5 years time?

A household name with leaflets in your doctor's office? Posters and bumper stickers maybe? The medical profession knowledgeable about sugar sensitivity? Local Radiant Recovery groups, perhaps?

All it takes is a little vision and application and they can happen, every single one of them. If you want to talk about your ideas, come on over to the Ambassadors list and help make a difference in someone else's life.

** How I Found Radiant Recovery **

I'm Adrienne, married with three children ages 16-24, all at home. I work full time in a demanding job, usually arriving home exhausted. I diagnosed myself as having sugar addiction several years ago, but my doctor never took it seriously when I mentioned it to him, and my psychiatrist said that increased appetite was a common side-effect of anti-depressants. The usual "diet and exercise" were always mentioned, and I successfully lost weight several times, only to crash hard each time, regaining all the weight lost, and losing the self respect that I had gained.

Half a year ago I finally had the realization that regular dieting was never going to work - sure, I can lose the weight, but my cravings will always return and I will put the weight back on. I had to find a better answer. Research on the internet eventually led me to PNP. Reading the book was an emotional experience - somebody who doesn't know me personally was describing exactly my feelings. I felt like crying.

I've been working on step one for a month - I'm a very lazy eater and have found a breakfast that suits me so I have it every day - oatmeal, soya milk and protein powder. However, I do find that it hasn't stopped my hunger mid-morning, or had an effect on my depression. I realize I am going to need support of others in order for this to succeed, and I look forward to getting to know everyone and learn about the resources the website has to offer.

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

If you do not have a copy of Recipes to Remember, it is a good thing to get it. Especially this time of year. Great recipes for the kids going back to school. I love the section on wraps and stacks. I actually use this cookbook.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

** Radiant Kitchen **

Who knew? It’s National Breakfast Month! In honor of National Breakfast Month I thought I’d share three pancake recipes. I can’t take credit for any of them. Enjoy!

This is one of my all time favorite pancakes. It's from the Laurel’s Kitchen Cookbook and was originally shared with Radiant Recovery by Val L in 2006. These pancakes are chewy and adapt well to any add ins. My husband and daughters like them with blueberries.

Oatmeal Pancakes

  • 1 1/4 cup milk, I use almond or oatmilk
  • 1 cup old fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup flour, I use ¼ cup oat flour and ¼ cup brown rice flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
Combine milk and oats and let stand for at least 5 minutes.

Add the oil and eggs to the oat milk mixture and mix well. Stir in the flour, baking powder, salt and any add ins. Mix just until the dry ingredients are moistened.

Cook on a hot, lightly oiled griddle. Turn when the top is bubbly and the edges are slightly dry.

This next recipe is originally from Ellie and Sascha, two children whose Mom was on the Parents list several years ago. It goes back to 2002 and was a huge staple in my home for years. It was a way I could get my daughters to eat breakfast and even today is a comfort food for my girls. It’s not enough protein as written for an adult but it could be a nice addition to an adult’s breakfast and kids just love them!

Roll Up Pancakes

For each person use:
  • 1 Tablespoon of the flour of your choice
  • 1 Tablespoon of cottage cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 2 Tablespoons of Milk
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of vanilla
Whiz in blender until smooth. Pour the mixture into a hot skillet, and cook like a thin pancake. When it comes out of the pan spread any topping on the pancake and roll it up. My family likes peanut butter or berries heated in the microwave with a bit of water. I’m sure other fillings would work. Try it and let us know what your family likes the best.

Finally, this recipe is handed down in our family, is in many Kosher cookbooks and is yummy!

Cottage Cheese Pancakes
  • 1 pound cottage cheese
  • 3 eggs
  • ½ cup flour of your choice
  • 3 tablespoons milk of your choice
  • dash of vanilla
  • cinnamon to taste
Mix everything together and fry in a hot skillet or on a griddle.

Happy National Breakfast Month!

Gail

** Radiant YLD **

We had a lesson in the *Looking at All Those Diets* Class that I thought would be fun to share. It is about YLD. I hadn't planned it but added it because it seemed to fit.

On Sun, Sep 4, 2011 at 6:37 PM, Kathleen wrote:

Now, this is fascinating because when I started I had NO idea that I would be talking with you about YLD and its virtues..but I am so irked by those diet thingies, that I guess I will, LOL.

Ok...

#1 The purpose of it is to allow you to heal the reason you got fat in the first place which includes:

sugar addiction, fats addiction, junk food addiction...that package

which come from unbalanced sugar sensitivity. So it is going to root cause, not symptomatic manifestation of the imbalance.

The process stops addictive behaviors so you get a huge benefit along the way. The process demands that you learn how to eat and do maintenance BEFORE you start the weight-loss phase. So you come to weight loss with clarity, humor, problem solving and a whole lot of skill.

The process has you look at the emotional stuff that adds to weight gain and ambivalence about weight loss.

The process helps you get over the societal myth that being fat CAUSES all sorts of health problems.

The process teaches you how to know what YOUR body needs, and how to discern using data from your lifestyle to make change in a way you can hold over a long period of time.

The process is incremental, so you start with creating a foundation, going through the seven steps and then step up to weight loss in action with a functional attitude about how to lose weight in a safe and healthy way.

The process then gives you the 8 components of weight loss and supports you in choosing which of them you wish to do in which order. You get personal support and problem solving throughout that journey.

The process allows you to identify if you are stuck, and to unravel what factors are contributing and what to do.

The process gives you extraordinary information about exercise appropriate for your level of skill and fitness, and how to plan a complementary exercise program that works for you.

It's fun, it's funny, it has great support, it grows with you, we learn more as we do it, we laugh a lot.

Oh yah, and you lose weight, LOL.

I am sure there is lots more...but this will start.

I will talk a little about exercise in another email.

kathleen

Yes, yes, yes. YLD is all of this!

Until this year, I wasn't able to really put it all together. There has been something about my process. I think I needed more emotional healing before I could really approach the weight loss steps calmly and clearly. I now know that I absolutely can lose weight without being hungry or wacky. I am tickled to be living into this piece of Step 7... because weight loss has become for me just one more thing to clear up on Step 7, neither better nor worse than anything else. I am gaining clarity by shedding weight, and then I will simply maintain my weight the same way that I maintain my money or my relationships or anything else in my life.

Thank you for what you have given us.

** Radiant Conversations **

We have a new portal for the Conversations program. Come check it out here.

Last week we talked about the power of intention in creating our recovery. I love that we have two *units* of thought on each topic. The eurochat has a tone that is often very different from the US chat. I love how they add to and complement one another.

And honestly, this is the cutting edge of step seven - these conversations about being in life as a step seven person. And the fun thing is you don't have to be on step seven to enjoy and learn. But it is a window into why we do all this.

If you would like to join us, you can do that below.

** Our Online Groups **

The Radiantdepression group is all about support for the person who is depressed and trying to work the 7-step program of recovery from sugar addiction. Many of us have struggled with severe depression for years without any hope of finding an end to it. But through doing the food we have found that hope returning and have found light where before there was only darkness.

Some of us are taking anti-depressants while doing the food, so we talk about how the two are compatible and we also share about getting through the tough spots together, with support from each other. If you are feeling depressed please come join us. There is hope.

**A Key Part of Step Seven **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

Because so many of you are starting to meditate, I am resending this article this week.

Those of you who have heard me speak at book signings or at Ranch know that I often include meditation and prayer as two of the best beta-endorphin raisers in the world. They are a key part of Step 7 and creating a life that is rich, full and loving. We have people in our community who come from many backgrounds with many ideas of prayer and meditation. And many folks who have been raised in more traditional communities think of meditation as either some esoteric thing that has nothing to do with them, or some new age thing that feels strange.

Let me say a little about the context I am using when I refer to these. For me, neither is denominational or scary and both can do many things. I think the most important thing is to know why one prays or meditates. It is the 'why' that gives the quality of the prayer or meditation and makes it of one order or another.

You may pray or meditate to open yourself up to the Divine Force, you may pray or meditate to reject ordinary awareness, you may pray or meditate to enter the depths of your being, you may pray or meditate to learn how to make sense of things and integrate all you are learning. You may pray or meditate for others.

You may pray or meditate to enter into peace and calm and silence - this is what most folks do, and often with little success. But you can pray or meditate to receive an energy that heals you, to see places in your heart that are asking to be healed, and to learn to see how you are progressing. You may pray or meditate for very practical reasons: when you hit a rough time, when you are looking for an answer, or when you want some help in what choice to make.

I think all of us have our own mode of prayer or meditation. But if we want the prayer or meditation to be dynamic, we need to have an aspiration for progress as we sit in prayer or meditation. If we come to either with an open heart and ask that we be helped in our progress, profound change will emerge. Come to prayer or meditation with that sense of desire to grow, rather than wanting to escape.

And here is another idea, one that may sound strange. Ask for your body to be healed, this healing of our bodies is key. We need to see our bodies as having value, and we need to want to perfect them rather than ditch or run from them, or ignore them, or drug them with alcohol, sugar, caffeine or white stuff. If we see our bodies as instruments to help in our process, then we see our doing the food, doing the process of the 7 steps as part of that commitment. We do this, not to climb out of the hole of our addictions, but to discover this connection to what Star Wars called 'the Force' - our healing power, a power that will nourish and sustain us.

Putting prayer and meditation into a healing body is a mighty tool for transformation - way beyond crawling through the day wishing just to stop hurting. Prayer and meditation create an inner silence of wonder, a beatitude and a way of being that is not possible in regular life. Both shape my day in a big way. It is the core of my step 7.
