October 17, 2011

Hi {!firstname_fix}

Well, I have been home long enough to feel settled. Euroranch was truly fabulous. It was relaxed and fun, we had a great time with people, and I think we found a new way of learning that will impact all of what we do in the community. Euroranch seems to do that every year, LOL. This year was how can we make these ideas come alive...

and how can we meet the ideas of addiction and recovery fearlessly and with joy. I will be thinking about new classes to do that.

These classes will begin Wednesday, October 19, 2011. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Brain Chemistry: Beta Endorphin (2 weeks) is one of our most popular classes. It will teach you the core of the science behind the program. This is the outline for a critical part of sugar sensitivity, why you act the way you do and what you can do to change it. I love this class and so do all the people who have taken it. Somehow BE rocks!

Radiant Play (2 weeks) is based on the material that came out of our discussions about the amygdala in chat. I learned that play has a huge impact on our ability to handle emotional change, and to make sense of the world. It was mind boggling to me. We will be talking about the neurochemistry of play. Why it is especially important for ss people and why even more so for those of us who have committed to recovery.

This class is not about the psychology of play. It is about the the neurochemistry of it and why it is so crucial for us. And because we have been talking about play in chats, we will incorporate these ideas as well - what kind of play works for *you*...how can you nurture it?

So come take it for you, or if you are a parent or grandparent, for your children.

Radiant Step 3 (2 weeks) - will give you small steps to success. Learn what the most successful members have done to work their way to solid meals, on time, with good foods. This class will provide detailed suggestions to guide you.

These classes will begin Wednesday, October 26, 2011. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Radiant Step 1 (2 weeks) is our foundation class to get you started. Learn all four parts of step 1 in a structured way. Learn how to progress through them with enjoyment. Let us support getting your program off to a fabulous start.

Handling the Holidays: Thanksgiving (2 weeks) - will help you focus on gratitude rather than pie. Learn how to make this day a time of reflection and grace even if Uncle Sandy gets drunk and your sister asks about your weight.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

For a while you may struggle with the concept that 'doing the food' - something so simple and so not sexy - can be so powerful.

** Testimonial of the Week **

I want to tell you all about how my life has improved, but it's the kind of thing that boggles my mind once I start to examine it. It's like if I was to drop a huge can of paint on the ground - it would go everywhere and touch everything. And once I sat down to make a list of all the things that paint touched it would be overwhelming.

I could focus on the physical:
No more achy joints
I don't have migraines anymore
My skin looks and feels better
I have more, and more sustained, energy

I could focus on the emotional:
I am patient now
I am able to react to events without drama
I am much more centered and laugh a LOT more

I could focus on the mental:
I think much more clearly
I am able to find solutions instead of flapping around
I can follow through with ideas to their end with efficiency

There are so many other things. Best of all, I don't feel like I am a slave to any kind of food, sugar or not. I have had a huge education about my own body and my own preferences, and each person's knowledge base is going to be so specific to that person.

Just yesterday I overheard a conversation between coworkers, and the topic of ingredients in popular drinks came up. Someone said, "well, you'll never fully know what's in all the stuff you put into your body - you'll never be able to avoid everything that might contain bad stuff."

Well, once you've done this for a while, you realize how funny that sounds. You get to know SO MUCH about so much, you'll start to learn how to read labels in a meaningful way. And there's tons of delicious, amazing food out there. My enjoyment of food didn't really start until the last few years.

Have fun with your shake! And eat pudding if you want, who cares? If you don't want to, great. But step one is only about adding, it's not taking away. Just do the four steps of breakfast:

enough protein for your body weight
with a complex carb (toast, cereal, oatmeal, bagel, whatever...)
within one hour of your feet hitting the floor
every day

Good luck!

** Radiant Ambassadors **

I've just got back from Euroranch - it was the best ranch yet (and this was my 5th). It was so relaxing; so full strong women who loved playing! I learnt loads, met truly wonderful people and reconnected with friends. What a weekend!

So on the Sunday a few of us went to the really old Haunch of Venison pub for lunch. The ordering was pretty simple this time - 7 tuna jacket potatoes and a roast turkey dinner. We enjoyed the company, the food (I have never seen such large potatoes LOL!) and the setting. After a while a lady came over to us to ask what brought us together - were we friends or crafters or... Diane answered, yes to all of it! Kathleen mentioned that we had just finished a seminar (it felt more like fun than any seminar I've ever attended!) on sugar addiction and how to heal it through nutrition. The lady's eyes lit up and she was now really interested - so I gave her a Radiant Recovery business card.

It's funny how sometimes you can just be in the right place at the right time.

** How I Found Radiant Recovery **

My name is Kathy, I heard about potatoes I think from my physical therapist. She mentioned the book. After deciding that I could be a candidate for Overeaters Anonymous, I began to see more issues with sugar than with overeating. So I decided to buy the book and check out the web site.

I am struggling with the amount of protein per meal, (I am overweight and need a lot), but I have been working on it for a couple of weeks now. When I have cravings or grumpiness, my dear husband gets out the book and reads to me.

All of it is confusing, I have been on and off a vegetarian, vegan, raw food..... Not sure what is the right way to eat anymore.

I live in Michigan, in a small town, I work for myself as a Real Estate Broker, my husband is a State Farm Insurance agent. We have 7 children, the last one will be moving out soon, and we will be empty nesters in a big house.|

I look forward to any insights and helps that the class can offer.

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

I would like to speak with you a little about our flagship product, Restore. Over the past ten months, we have been faced with a staggering increase in the price of manufacturing our shake. Our price has increased 40%. This reflects a phenomenal increase worldwide in demand for it. Anyone who is coming into the market as a new wholesale whey protein isolate customer cannot even buy it, We have been struggling with how to handle this and have absorbed the increase which has meant a very significant decrease in our income.

This week, I will be needing to announce a 10% increase in our pricing. I asked Kathleen to say something about why our product is so special (other than the taste which you all already know about). Here is what she said:

*Whey Protein Isolate comes from the by-product of cheese making. It starts as whey and then is distilled a number of times to pull out concentrated protein molecules. How this is done makes a difference. And how refined it is contributes to the quality of the product. The refinement is determined by the ratio of the protein to the weight of the product. Good WPI is generally around 90% protein. Something like dry milk powder is about 30% protein.

If you go and read labels and see what the ratios are, you can see that many manufacturers are cutting their WPI with other fillers to adjust for the price. In addition, they are also using products made in China rather than purchasing American made WPI.

Another key issue. Pure WPI is not exactly yummy. What many companies do is mask the taste by adding all sorts of sweeteners and other additives so you don't notice. What I did was spend several years researching ways to get a natural flavor that is delightful and retains what is called the dispersability of the product - i.e., how well it mixes. That research meant learning all about what WPI is, how it is made, where it is produced and how to create a mix that has great taste while retaining the inherent value of WPI.

We have not changed the formula of Restore, we have not added fillers, we know you love it the way it is. We recently explored using some different options and we just were not satisfied with what we got.*
So, we are not going to compromise the product, but we will be adjusting the price. I hope this makes sense to you.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

Easy Egg and Oat One-Pan Breakfast

Here is a breakfast recipe (for one) that is quick and tastes great! Some folks like it with plain yogurt on top. This is another one of those that we all “play” with to add, subtract and change to suit our tastes.

  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup milk or yogurt
  • 1 cup oats
  • 1 small apple, diced
  • Cinnamon and nutmeg to taste
Beat the eggs, stir in milk or yogurt. Add oats, apple, nutmeg and cinnamon. Cook like a pancake or scramble in oiled skillet.

This is one of Kathleen’s personal recipes.

** Radiant Conversations **

We have a new portal for the Conversations program. Come check it out here.

We started a discussion at ranch about spirituality as the notion that there is something bigger than our personal selves. Some people talked about this being a guiding force, some talked of it being an illusive sort of thing, and some felt that it was not something they resonated with at all. It was actually pretty exciting to look at the question from differing points of view.

What I have seen is that as programs deepen, this question comes up. It is not a question about *god* or religion so much as a question of purpose and how do I know who I am meant to be.

At any rate, I am going to bring it up in chat (smile) and I think it will be fun for us to bat around.

** Our Online Groups **

The Radiantdepression group is all about support for the person who is depressed and trying to work the 7-step program of recovery from sugar addiction. Many of us have struggled with severe depression for years without any hope of finding an end to it. But through doing the food we have found that hope returning and have found light where before there was only darkness.

Some of us are taking anti-depressants while doing the food, so we talk about how the two are compatible and we also share about getting through the tough spots together, with support from each other. If you are feeling depressed please come join us. There is hope.

**A New Look at Halloween **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

Many of the parents originally felt stumped by Halloween, the Queen of all sugar holidays. But they are getting creative. Vicki is making changes in the treats she offers:
Last year I bought little things, like pencils, cheap Harry Potter glasses, the Halloween long scary fake fingernails, things from the birthday gift aisle at Wal-Mart, etc. and put them in little gift bags tied with a ribbon. My son helped me put them together. We just did a few each night for about a week. I spent a little more than I would have on candy, but I didn't feel guilty about handing them out. I gave a bag to a few friends' kids and they loved them, so I am assuming that the kids at the door liked them too.
Here are some other goodies our moms give out:
  • Small packets of pencils
  • Microwave popcorn from Costco
  • Small toys from Oriental Trading Company (you can buy these on line or through their catalogue)
  • Small bags of pretzels
  • Small bags of Goldfish
  • Packets of cheese or peanut butter crackers
Gail actually “buys” her girls’ candy - she purchases the candy from them in exchange for cash, which they use to buy things they really want, like music CDs. She got a number of the other parents intrigued by this idea. Vicki liked it a lot:
For the past two years, I have bought back my kids' candy. I will give them $15 each and they would much rather have the money than the candy. Originally, I let them pick out 5 pieces that they could have with meals, but not all at once. This year I am going to tell them that I will buy all their candy for $20. Even the five pieces is making me uncomfortable now. Of course that doesn't mean they won't sneak some while they are out trick-or-treating, but at least I am making a dent!.
Melanie now does a sugar-free Halloween party with finger foods and games. She holds a costume contest and then the kids all make jack-o-lanterns together. No one even thinks about the candy any more. Maggi does the same in a big way:
I decided that we would make our Halloween tradition about the pumpkin carving and the costume. That way, there is a special trip to pick out the pumpkin, carve it and eat dinner in the dark by pumpkin candlelight on Halloween. The other thing I had always wanted to do was to teach my son how to sew -- he picks out his costume, we go to the fabric store, pick out patterns, he chooses the fabric and we sew it together (that means I do 90 percent of the work, and he sews a few straight seams, pins the pattern and pins fabric...). This has worked great, as he has costumes for dramatic play that are really nice that he uses all the time throughout the year. The costumes this way are a little pricey and very labor intensive for mom, but his cool midnight blue with silver trim wizard costume will be treasured for many years.
Janie raised yet another alternative. She and her family simply are simply not going to do Halloween.
We decided we are going to go to the Grand Canyon! We will stay a couple of days and then drive the whole way back on Halloween. So we will miss the stupid holiday all together and not have to worry about it. I will, of course, talk to them about all the fun we will be having on our trip, and all the fun things we will be doing instead of trick or treating.
