December 12, 2011

Hi {!firstname_fix}

I think I told you that a few weeks ago I traveled down south to see the Sand Hill Cranes. This morning, I was driving home early in the morning and in the field that is right near my house there were a bunch of cranes walking with the Canadian Geese. This is my life in New Mexico. That scene and the sight of the lunar eclipse this morning 15 minutes before sunrise was simply why I love living here.

This morning I sent a completed draft of my new book off to New York to see if we can find someone who might like to publish it. Hold it in your heart and send good vibes. This is a book about life after recovery...really what all of you here know about already...but it is for the people who are not here yet (smile). And it will be fun for you to see how it all fits together...the topics that we share in chat, perhaps the classes that may feel like random explorations. Of course I will keep you posted.

This class will begin Wednesday, December 14, 2011. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Holy Night Reflections (1 week or so) - is our annual reflection on the meaning of light in the darkness. This is a free class, my gift to the community. We would love to have you join us. If you have never done this class, sign up for it. It will change everything. Remember, this class is NOT about doing the food or the steps, it is about *why* we heal.

There will be no classes beginning Wednesday, December 21, 2011.

These classes will begin Wednesday, December 28, 2011. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Using Radiant Resources (1 week) - is a free orientation for those of you who are brand new and would like to find your way around town. Come sit on the top of our double-decker bus for a guided tour. And even if you are not brand new, this is a really fun class to reconnect with all the treats of the community.

Napping Your Way to Radiance (2 weeks) - In writing the new book, I went back to the material we had developed before and took it way deeper. The information is so exciting, I thought you HAVE to hear the update. I have been doing what I will outline in the class and it is phenomenal.

Getting to Radiant Ranch (8 weeks) - is an ongoing 8-week class to provide skills, motivation and support in getting to Radiant Ranch. It is particularly geared to people who feel they cannot afford ranch. If you attend and participate, and decide to come to ranch, the fee for the class is applied to your tuition. Last year, all the graduates attended.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

** Testimonial of the Week **

I am in my hotel room and enjoying catching up here. I have a funny story to tell that will keep me laughing for a long while.

Yesterday, before we left the office, two of my coworkers came and sat by my desk. One of them never carries a purse so the other coworker asked her what was in it. She pulled out a wallet, her keys and one other thing. Then the other person emptied her purse to show us what she carried. The one with next to nothing in her purse turned to me and asked if I carried a lot in my purse.

I grinned and opened my bag and starting pulling stuff out. Ziploc bag of roasted sweet potatoes, small plastic container of sweet potatoes, pouch of brown rice, tiny container of peanut butter, ziploc of almonds, walnuts and brazil nuts mixed together, bag of raw vegetables. Then my light box, my wallet and a pile of other stuff. The icing on the cake was a pair of underwear. (Aging bladder and all!) We laughed and laughed. There was a mound of food. They said later they wished they had taken a picture.

They have retold the story twice already to the other people we have met up with and there is so much laughter at every telling. I didn't tell them I have lots of other food in my suitcase yet.

And now they know I am serious about what I eat and I don't have to explain a thing. This morning when I joined them for breakfast they asked me if I had brought breakfast with me and when I said yes, they said they weren't surprised. I didn't explain and they didn't ask.

When I think about how serious I have been most of my life, and how in the past I would have wanted them to understand why I had all this food along, I am grateful that I could have a laugh with them and leave it as is.

Have you been to your local library recently?

Even they have a presence online now where you can order books, write reviews and search their catalogues.

But some libraries go one step further and ask you to recommend books for them to buy for their readers. I recommended Potatoes not Prozac to my local library and they went out and bought 4 more copies to lend out!

I wonder if that will work in every library?

Let me know!

** How I Found Radiant Recovery **

I am Caterina and live in San Antonio, TX, having grown up in Wisconsin. Our household growing up always had lots of sugars and whites around. I believe now that my father was ss. Over the years, I am now 64 yrs, I have had a growing awareness of being addicted to sugar and now it is affecting my health in negative ways.

Currently I have been sugar-free and on Step 7 for the last 3 months. I'm aware of various resources, but keep finding out about more. I want to be sure that I am familiar with all the options, to set myself up for the best support and success.

I found RR by googling 'sugar addiction'.

** Radiant Kitchen **

This recipe is one of my all time favorites from the Radiant Recipe Cookbook. I think it very festive and perfect for cold winter days. Just the thought of this one warms me up! Enjoy!

Spiced Butternut Soup

  • 1 T. Olive oil
  • 3/4 c. onion, cut into 1/2 inch dice
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 T. grated fresh ginger root
  • 3 c. vegetable or chicken stock
  • 4 c. (about 1 medium) butternut squash, cubed
  • 1 T. lime juice
  • 1/2 tsp. ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cardamom
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp. ground white pepper
  • Dash of cayenne or to taste
  • Sour cream or yogurt for garnish
Heat olive oil in large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion, garlic, and ginger and saute briefly until vegetables turn translucent and fragrant, about 3 minutes. Add squash and broth. Cover and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer 30 minutes or until squash is tender. Puree soup in batches in a blender, being careful to avoid spilling and burns. Return soup to pan. Stir in lime juice and remaining spices (coriander through cayenne) and heat until hot. Garnish with sour cream or yogurt if desired. Makes 4 servings. Prep time: 15 minutes. Cook time: 45 minutes. Beginner Skill.

** Our Online Groups **

The radiantrecovery list was set up as a support for people who are in recovery for alcohol and/or drugs and would like to add the Radiant Recovery nutritional piece to their healing. There are people who are wanting to see how doing the Radiant Recovery program can help them stop using alcohol or drugs. And there are people who have many years of sobriety through AA, who are learning how to integrate doing the food steps so the promises come in a way they could not have imagined.

**Light in the Darkness **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

Hanukkah starts on the 20th - that is 10 days. I will be lighting candles. Soyal, the traditional winter solstice ceremony of the Hopi people, starts on the 21st. It is a 16-day period of ceremony that will set the tone for the coming year. Christmas is in 15 days. My tree is filled with lights. Wikipedia lists 36 different types of midwinter celebrations across the globe. I think it is an important time for connecting.

New Mexico is very dark at night. The sky is clear and you can see light from very far away. I love seeing the candles as I stand outside and look in the house. Harold was on the roof putting the reindeer and sleigh up. This year I added a Golden Retriever to the sleigh. You can see them from all the way down the street. It makes me smile when I come home at night.

This month is the time of deepest darkness. We have these special days, days of celebrating that even in the darkness, a tiny spot of light can be seen. The Holy Night class will be starting on Wednesday. Many folks have wobbled and relapsed this month. And the feelings of relapse are always the fear and desperation that we all know so well. Christmas filled with sugar and treats is a double-edged sword. We think those things are such a part of celebrating and that just a little won't matter. We think we will just *celebrate* and then January first we will once again make the resolve to clean it up and do it.

Today, I am going to invite you to try something new. Do not wait until January first, but today start holding the idea of light coming. Each choice we make can build more light. And connecting here to others who are committed and willing and gaining skill is a mighty tool. The loving and funny conversations on the forum will support you and hold you up. The lists are humming. Whatever support you need, you can find it.

Humor and connection heal us. I believe that all the traditions that remember the light at this time of year can help us remember our own inner light. Sometimes it feels that the draw is to spending money and struggling, or rushing around, but it is a time to reflect on healing. No matter what the circumstances you are in this year, invite the light and ask that it fill you. And join us in the Holy Night class.
