December 10, 2012

Hi {!firstname_fix}

The trees have lost their leaves, so morning means lacey outlines against that sky…gold on the bottom edge, then green, then the dark blue of night with one bright dot of Jupiter. These winter mornings are still and astounding…clear, bright, and soft. I love being out while the sun creeps up to light the sky.

Today was weird. To the East, dark clouds covered the mountains and swirled with snow-filled clouds, to the North, the sky was blue, to the West, the sky was gold and to the South, the sky was grey swirl. Must be New Mexico. And then an hour later, everything was blue again. We are waiting for some kind of water to fall from the sky to wet the dryness.

My dog in the sleigh and the reindeer sit on my roof, glowing with light from dusk to 11:00. The electric candle flickers in the window all night. The Christmas tree twinkles with many colors. I understand why people have celebrations of light in the darkness. it is very dark out there. Soon to be new moon, so we pass through the stillness of winter.

I love this time of year.

This class will begin Tuesday, December 18, 2012. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

starry sky Holy Night (19 days) - is a free reflection to help you shift gears into the real meaning of Christmas, Hanukkah, Soyal or any solstice celebration you may do. I do this every year and people find it very supportive. I am doing it differently this year to honor 2012 so be sure to join us.

These classes will begin Wednesday, January 2, 2012. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

clutter Clearing All That Stuff (2 weeks) - I am revising the clutter class to work with the perspective of the research on how *hoarders* brains are wired differently and how this research may apply to those of us who are sugar sensitive. I will look at why our *stuff* or our *collections* may actually provide comfort for us.

This will be a FOCUSED, quick and dirty support to getting your house, your yard, your closets, your life, your soul all cleaned up. This will be a funny, playful way to look at the scary corners filled with 15 spice jars, cosmetics pots of face cream, tools or old sheets that you might need someday. This is an opportunity to face your stuff and be supported in letting it go.

Most important, this is about taking away the shame we have all carried about this hidden part of our lives. Take your recovery to another level. Not for the feint of heart or anyone not ready to play. But if you are brave and want to take a look at this, come join us.
child holding teddy bear Magical Introversion (2 weeks) - is a class which grew out of your teachings. Last year you sat with me and talked about what life is like for you. I took that material, added the brain component, and put together the implications for sugar sensitives. We LOVE this material, love this class

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

Hi Gill,

Happy to share some of my radiant journey. I was desperate. I was gaining weight and really frightened, feeling I would die if this pattern continued. I was considering surgery as I couldn't see another solution.

I don't know what made me do it, but I googled sugar and up came PnP. I was about to order it on Amazon when I checked my bookcase and there it was, having waited patiently on my bookshelf for 9 years! I read the book and decided I had nothing to lose, joined this list, the step one list, and started eating breakfast. I did the steps just as Kathleen had written them, I asked questions, acted on the answers, got support, did the classes, met other Radiant Brits for lunches, attended Ranch. I gained weight at first but felt so much better I carried on. I have now lost around 30lbs. I detoxed from sugar 6 months later and then caffeine gave me up.
My life has transformed. I no longer get depressed, I have fun, I am connected, I exercise, I feel great and have a fantastic job. I love being part of this community, I could go on :) I would never have believed that all of this could come from 'just doing the food.'

Jo

**How I Found Radiant Recovery **

Hi Everyone! I'm Sandra from the Chicago area. I've been doing the food for 6 and 1/2 years and it has completely changed my life. I struggled with food, weight, and self esteem issues for a very long time.

In college, I was studying nutrition and discovered Kathleen's book at the library one day. A few years later, I bought all the books and dived right in! Slowly, things began to change for me as I did the food.

I had a few times during those 6 years where life was hard and I sort of fell of the wagon so to speak, but things in my life kept showing up and nudging me back to Kathleen's work. I resisted and cried and whined and finally said "Okay, I will try it again for 6 months, and if it doesn't work than that's it". LOL.

I haven't looked back since then and thankfully have developed a great relationship with food and my body and my life :-).

I'm so glad all of you signed up for this resources course and I look forward to getting to know you better.

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

This week we are introducing a new product. Kathleen found these fabulous little calendars that are the exact size of the journals we all love. The colors we will offer are ocean (blue), orchid (Raspberry) and licorice (black).

She found that the size and interior were perfect for recording regular life that was going along with her Your Body Speaks Journal.

One day she was over on Selena's Blog and noticed that Selena was making *journal covers* and she got all excited. She ordered this little blue and green cover.

She ordered one, and just slipped the organizer into the other side. I got her to take some pictures of what the *set* looks like.

Then other people got excited. Steph had Selena make her one in hot, sparkly pink. Mom asked Selena to add an extra snap to accommodate the calendars being added. You can look at her creative endeavors here.

Or if you want one, you can go here.

And if you want us to send someone you love one of the calendars, we can do that too. This is a GREAT addition to your journaling process, I guarantee.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

**Our Online Groups **

The radiantrecovery list was set up as a support for people who are in recovery for alcohol and/or drugs and would like to add the Radiant Recovery nutritional piece to their healing. Our approach to recovery encourages the use of 12-step programs and Radiant Recovery. I have heard from a lot of people who have many years of sobriety in AA but have just recently come across Radiant Recovery. Won't you come and join us over on the recovery list to learn how to integrate sobriety and doing the food steps? If you want the promises to come in a way you have not imagined, it is a great time to come over. And if you aren't sure, but think alcohol might be a problem for you, we are here to support that exploration as well. The folks on the list are warm, compassionate, caring and straightforward. So we would love to have you come join us.

Or come to the group page to find the one that will best support your program: http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm

**Another Look at Commitment **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

Every week, I get many letters from people who feel inadequate, overwhelmed, fat, out of control and unable to do the program. Or I get letters from people who feel buffeted by the stress in their lives. People have died, work is demanding, no time, no space, no capacity to “do” anything but get by.

And each time I say, “These feelings are caused by being out of balance. The stress does not create the feelings, your biochemistry does.” When you are balanced, you respond to stress differently, it becomes functional rather than overwhelming. You stand in the center of the swirl with a sense of calm and clarity about priorities and demands. And when you are not balanced, that idea seems totally off the wall.

When you are in the middle of what I call sugar feelings, you will be reactive and feel done to. You will feel like a victim. You will feel like you can do nothing right. And of course it seems like these feelings are REAL because it is what you feel. And when you feel that way, you need something to help you hold them, so you get ice cream and soda. And you feel better for a little while. Life is manageable for a few minutes and you are seduced into thinking that this is comfort. But what you think is comforting you is the cause of what you are feeling. It is a deadly, seductive dance.

When you are in that place, the idea of the “program” seems totally overwhelming. No, you cannot give up sugar. No, you cannot manage to plan anything. I just don’t get it! You feel it is just too big and too unattainable. It is too much so you need to just give up and feel that nothing will work.

So, here is the bottom line. This program can not only save your life, it can transform it. It can make you clear and steady. It can give you a platform for losing weight. But it cannot work its magic unless you do it. And you do not have to do it all at once. You do not have to be perfect or rigorous or disciplined. You can come, you can whine, you can stumble. But if you show up, ask for help and listen, and then follow instructions, things will change.

Sugar-sensitive people are notorious for not listening. We think we know better. We think that we are unique, a special case and the plain ole boring 'do the steps slowly and in order' does not really fit our situation. That way of thinking has to go. If you want what we have, do what we do. We do the steps. We have breakfast every morning, on time. We journal. We eat meals on time. We have enough protein for our body. We take the vitamins and eat the potato. We eat whole grains and we do not have sugar. We are funny, focused and purposeful.

And we are NOT different from you. We were there in that dark, horrible place. Every single one of us, including me, has been there. And it is a place we do not want to go back to. The way out was not magic. It was showing up and “doing”. Doing breakfast, doing journal. Doing potato. One choice at a time. One day at a time.

As I said last week, “Nodding will not heal you.” Agreement will not make change. Commitment makes change. You do not have to live that way any more. Come on over and let’s do this together.
