Hi {!firstname_fix}

lavendar field Today was blue sky and warm. Had a friend visiting. We ended up going over to Los Poblanos Farm in the late afternoon. There were 2 burros in the field running together. The staff wanted to catch one and bring it in for hoof care. We watched for 30 minutes while the burros outsmarted the people. Finally, they went and got the big, white farm horse and brought her in the field. The two little furries came running to see her and they could put a halter on the grey one.

There were goats and chickens, a big brown cow, a yellow tabby cat, wooly sheep, a llama, several dogs and a number of adolescent pigs. We sat facing East to the mountains while the light got lower and golder. We got talking about why I feel so at home there at the farm. I think it was visiting my aunt and uncle's farm as a child. We gathered eggs, jumped from the 2nd floor in the barn into piles of hay, drove the tractors in the fields, and gathered vegetables for dinner in the farm kitchen. I realized that my Auntie was probably in her late 30's then, caring for 5 children and running the farm. Somehow, it always felt like a safe haven to me.

If you are thinking about the Obesity Myth Class, do come and join us. I want to share some interesting new material I have found about about the cultural *wash* of negative assessments re: obesity that we live with. Finally the few lone voices are being chorused in science as folks are realizing there is more to the story than the scale. I love how it is all fitting together.

Step 1

Step 1 (2 weeks) - is our foundation class to get you started. Learn all four parts of step 1 in a structured way. Learn how to progress through them with enjoyment. Let us support getting your program off to a fabulous start.
Obesity Myth (2 weeks) - We have been doing some very creative stuff in Your Last Diet [our online weightloss program] which has sparked some real passion in me.

Even if you have taken this class before, I am going to encourage you to take it again. We are going to get down and dirty with the myths in this class and and look at how our culture shapes how we feel about ourselves. If you have ever had a thought about being *fat and ugly*, or feeling that being overweight means you are unhealthy, come learn a different way of thinking.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

Remember that sugar-sensitive people tend to be people of extremes. You may feel either totally awash in feelings or totally disconnected.

**Testimonial of the Week **

This is how it worked where the Appleton video took place. I am going to send a copy of LSA and the video to my school board. Also, as a teacher, I do the best I can in my own classroom. The other teachers in my school pretty much know what I do and how I feel about sugar etc...but if they are in denial as to their own problems with sweets, they don't really want to hear it. I do this one person at a time. My teaching partner is very supportive of this and does the same thing I do.

This year, I am going to go one step further...not just promoting ONLY healthy snacks, I am going to try to insist that EVERYONE bring a snack every day with protein in it. I can do whatever I can in the classroom, but if the district is still giving the kids less than quality food, then we have a lot more to do. I will try with my parents too, but that is also difficult since most don't even speak English...but I'll do the best I can.

The kids are one of the best methods of getting to them...and I tell them how I feel about the stuff and what they are and aren't allowed to eat in my classroom. Since kindergartners still like/love their teacher, it seems to be helpful!!! I have had parents tell me I have brainwashed their children (in a good way). It's very cool watching a 5 year old tell their parent that a lollipop isn't a healthy snack.

So...I guess where I'm going with this....you can do whatever you can, one teacher at a time...one parent at a time, one child at a time. You have already planted seeds.

Elaine

**Radiant Ambassadors **

Selena head shot

The BBC website is one of those that I refer to every so often for details on, well, pretty much anything really, LOL!

They always used to have lots of great resources on mental health. I went to look for it the other day and it had disappeared - to be replaced by an area on addictions. Well, that's something!

So I read more about the addictions information. There was no mention of 'sugar.' Anywhere.

I have written to them and we will see what happens.

If you want to join in, come on over to the Ambassadors list!

**How I Found Radiant Recovery **

Hi, happy to share some of my radiant journey.

I was desperate. I was gaining weight and really frightened, feeling I would die if this pattern continued. I was considering surgery as I couldn't see another solution. I don't know what made me do it, but I googled sugar and up came PnP. I was about to order it on Amazon when I checked my bookcase and there it was, having waited patiently on my bookshelf for 9 years!

I read the book and decided I had nothing to lose, joined the step one list and started eating breakfast. I did the steps just as Kathleen had written them. I asked questions, acted on the answers, got support, did the classes, met other Radiant Brits for lunches, attended Ranch. I gained weight at first but felt so much better I carried on. I have now lost around 30lbs.

I detoxed from sugar 6 months later and then caffeine gave me up. My life has transformed. I no longer get depressed, I have fun, I am connected, I exercise, I feel great and have a fantastic job. I love being part of this community, I could go on :)

I would never have believed that all of this could come from 'just doing the food.'

Jo

**Radiant Kitchen **

Sweet Potato Waffles (or Pancakes)

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 pound sweet potatoes, peeled, cooked and mashed (about 3/4 cup)
  • 1 1/2 tsp. oil
  • 1 large egg white, lightly beaten
  • 3/4 cup milk (cow, soy, oat)
  • 1/2 cup brown rice flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt (optional)

Directions:

Preheat waffle iron.

Combine the cooked sweet potato, oil, egg white and milk in a large bowl and beat until well blended. Add flour, baking powder and salt and beat until smooth.

Spray hot waffle iron with non-stick cooking spray. Cook waffles according to manufacturer's instructions using 3/4 c mix per waffle.

Serve with yogurt, fresh fruit, fruit compote or unsweetened applesauce.

If making pancakes, heat griddle until a sprinkle of water dances on griddle. Drop 1/4 cup batter on griddle. Cook until bubbles form on surface (about 3 minutes). Flip and cook on other side until golden brown.

Both waffles and pancakes can be frozen and reheated later.

**Radiant Conversations **

We have a new portal for the Conversations program. Come check it out here.

Conversations answers questions that are about living a life of recovery. We will ask questions like, "How do we take care of negative thoughts, how do we transform fear, what is equanimity, how does silence heal, and how does guided imagery work? And we find answers together. If you are feeling steady with your program, this is a wonderful place to have fun talking about the *other* stuff. If you are not steady, (smile), it will be a little confusing because of course doing the food is the first line of defense.

**Our Online Groups **

As the name says, the Radiant Step Three group is all about our very favorite Step 3. This can be a tough step for some when starting. People either forget to eat meals, eat the most inappropriate sugar-laden stuff or just graze through the day.

The Step 3 list is a great place to stop by for those who are finding this a challenging step, or who are starting out or who would just like some extra support. We talk a lot about things like: What is a meal, exactly? How do I get my body to cooperate with eating "just" three meals a day? What are some tips to help me with consistent timing? And all sorts of other aspects of this step. We try to make it fun, because... well why not make it fun?? It's a great place of support... come and join us! (And it matters not if you are new to the step, totally re-doing the step or just shoring up your Step 3 after being further along in the program.)

**Sugar, Sugar, Have to Get Rid of the SUGAR **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

The popular press is writing a lot about the evils of SUGAR. Today I got a manuscript in the mail about a new SUGAR book that they would like me to endorse. It offers a 3-day quick detox solution. Get it out, get rid of it and get on with your life. I was thinking, "Hmm, I don't think these folks have any idea about the concept of addiction."

The whole point of addiction is that we are not able to *just say no*...that approach reminds me of the public health promotions in the 80's where we hung red banners on street lights with a circle with a bar running through it with the *just say no* slogan below. I knew that the county had spent something like $50,000 on the campaign. It made no sense. It makes no sense now to try the same with sugar.

And yet every day I read posts here in the community from people who believe they have to get the sugar out now! "It is killing me," they say. "I HAVE TO take care of this addiction NOW." It is a good thing that we have awareness of sugar as a drug. But over and over and over I keep saying, "Don't focus on the sugar, focus on BREAKFAST." And they just think I am being silly and that I do not understand how important it is to deal with the issue right now. And man, no one wants to hear that this is just more addictive drama. Let's create crisis, let's put our brains into shock, let's be bold and brave and tough it out. After all, breakfast is so, so boring. I mean, what relationship could breakfast have to healing addiction?

Those of you who have been around for a while know that we are doing something very different here. We are doing healing. We are building recovery one small step, one nano step at a time. A good breakfast, a good breakfast on time. We are learning to have protein, best browns, and then we learn to wake up, to move from vague to aware with journals. We learn steady state, consistency, attention...and when it comes time to do the sugar, it is simply not an issue.

No dramatic *detox*...no blazing lights or trumpets, just, oh, yah, I forgot to have it today. But everything changes. Everything.

So we do not have sound bites about the sugar. Except maybe Eat Breakfast. But we have answers, we have healing and we have knowing. I hope you will come on board. It sure is fun.
