Hi {!firstname_fix}

Well I have lots to share this week. As I am sure many of you have realized, I have needed to review and revise the way I have been doing classes. Our classes offerings have kinda grown tremendously over the years and I think we have lost some focus with it. I have struggled with some keeping up and you have struggled in knowing what will be offering when. After a pretty in-depth review of the classes over the last 4 years I have a much better sense of what has worked well, and what has not.

So, I will be changing the system some and offering 4 types of classes in addition to the free orientation we do once a month. Here is how we will divide things up:

1) CORE: these will include Step One and Two classes and the three brain chemistry classes, Serotonin, Beta endorphin and Dopamine which will rotate through each quarter.

2) On DEMAND classes which will include Steps Three through Seven, as well as some of the *regulars* people love like Magical Introversion, Depression, Amygdala, and the other healing classes. These classes will be run whenever 10 people have signed up for one of them. No charges will be made until we actually run the class.

3) NEW CLASS offerings will include intriguing and critical topics as they emerge or as I discover in my research work.

4) INDEPENDENT STUDY will be offered on a number of the skills or special interest classes. You can purchase the curriculum, read it and then have an email consultation with me about the application of that specific material to your situation. In essence you get the material plus an ASK Kathleen in one package.

I think this will work much better for all of us. Now this revision means that I have not quite finished outlining the schedule and the logistics for all of this. It should be completed in the next few days.

Let me know if you have questions.

These classes will begin Wednesday, January 22, 2014. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Step 1

Step 1 (2 weeks) - is our foundation class to get you started. Learn all four parts of step 1 in a structured way. Learn how to progress through them with enjoyment. Let us support getting your program off to a fabulous start.
Brain Chemistry Beta Endorphin (2 weeks) - Learn how this chemical affects your self-esteem and why your capacity to cope may be directly related to your beta endorphin levels. A fascinating look at the part of the story that is most crucial to sugar sensitivity.

Look for the schedule mid week.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

For a while you may struggle with the concept that 'doing the food' - something so simple and so not sexy - can be so powerful.

**Testimonial of the Week **

Hi Everyone,

I would like to tell you all about the experience I had with my daughter (5) yesterday. I picked her up from Kindergarten along with my son (7). After we came home from school she was "cranky". I gave her a snack before doing homework then we settled in. During homework she was starting to getting frustrated. Scribbling all over her homework paper and ripping it. She has a very strong personality and when she doesn't want to do something, it becomes a battle of wills, usually. Not yesterday though. I just sat there and watched her "freak out", then I remembered a line Kathleen used, 'don't punish them...feed them.' So, I got her a heavier snack and within 10 mins the crying, screaming, anger and frustration disappeared and we were able to continue practicing her letters and could even sit down together and read a book.

I just asked her when we were both calm...'do you feel better after you ate?' The answer was yes, I'm so proud of her.

I am very proud of myself too b/c I stayed calm b/c my food has been good.

We were able to ride out another storm just b/c of doing the food. (smile)

**Radiant Life **

Sunday I had the house to myself because the daughters went to the beach. When Cathy (the older one) came by to pick up Margie, she found us in the middle of a hilarious discussion. Margie was doing her comic routine and mimicking again.

This time she was mimicking what happens when her friends come over after school and look in the fridge for something to eat. Inside are either whole-foods ingredients like kale and unflavored yogurt, or strange-looking leftovers (my spinach-and-pumpkin quiche). She says they say, "oh I'm not that hungry" and then close the door. So then they roam to the pantry and what is there are things like canned salmon, turmeric, and two-year-old coconut milk from some experiment I planned. So the friend gets this sad look on her face and leaves the kitchen.

So then Cathy comes in and said she dropped by the other day to raid the fridge and hm, that pumpkin pie looks good - but why does it have green in it!!! eyew!!

They laughed their heads off. But then we talked about how different it is to do homemade whole foods as opposed to having convenience food around all the time.

And then we did some problem-solving so Margie could feel like a better hostess. We came up with nuts, fruit, HFS chips and salsa, good PB&J, good sandwiches. Margie asked how she could recognize "healthy" alternatives of things to have so we talked just a little about labels. This is a big deal because she hates with a passion when I read labels too much while shopping.

Too funny.

Connie

**How I Found Radiant Recovery **

Hello! My name is Susan. I am from Maine, USA. I am a recovering alcoholic and have been sober for 5 years.....but my first addiction was sugar as a kid and I realized that a long time ago but thought it was lifestyle and learned habits.

I am eating protein every morning but that is it. I can't seem to write in my journal every day. I am reading Potatoes not Prozac now. I gave up on trying to do too much for two weeks because I am on vacation with my parents and sister and they are all sugar addicts and the house is full of sugar. I didn't last one day without binging on ice cream cake at night when everyone was gone.

I always try to do everything on my own and I have joined this group knowing that I need a new strategy and need to ask for help. The first book I bought was The Sugar Addicts Total Recovery Program because I did a search on Amazon for sugar addiction. I have since bought Potatoes not Prozac, and Your Last Diet. I intend to read them all, and I bought some extras for female alcoholics I sponsor. I would like to be a power of example and heal myself so I can help so many other people that I know that struggle with it also.

Thank you for being here!

Apple Pie with Cheddar Crust

Ingredients:

Crust:

  • 1 cup oat or brown rice flour, or a combination of both
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 Tbl cold butter
  • 3 Tbl Crisco or other solid veg shortening
  • 1/3 c iced water
  • 1 c shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Filling:

  • 2 1/2 lb apples, peeled, cored and sliced
  • 2 cups unsweetened apple juice
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 Tbl cornstarch dissolved in 2 Tbl apple juice
Directions:

For crust:
  1. In medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. With pastry blender or 2 knives, cut in butter and shortening until mixture forms coarse crumbs.
  2. Stir in ice water just until dough comes together. Stir in cheese and combine well.
  3. Form dough into a dish and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate 1 hour.

For Filling:

  1. Combine apples, juice and cinnamon in a large saucepan. Bring to boil.
  2. Once apple mixture boils, lower heat to simmer and cook down 10-15 min.
  3. Return to boil and thicken by adding cornstarch mixture. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Stir in Vanilla

To Assemble:

  1. Spoon apple mixture into 9" pie pan sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Preheat oven to 450 degrees fahrenheit.
  2. On lightly floured surface, quickly roll out the crust into a 13" round. Drape the crust over the apples and crimp edges to seal. With a sharp knife, cut 2 or 3 slits in dough for steam vents.
  3. Place pie plate on a baking sheet and place in 450 degree oven. Bake 20 minutes. Reduce oven temp to 350 degrees and bake 15 minutes more or until crust is golden and apples are tender. Let cool at least ˝ hour before cutting.

Yield: One 9" pie - 6 to 8 servings.

**Our Online Groups **

The Radiant Step One list is a great place to learn the nuances of breakfast, build a strong foundation for the rest of the steps, and find how helpful it is to share our journey with others. It is great for new people and those who have been on the program a long time. Sharing helps everyone.

The awesome thing is we all, Step 1 or Step 7, eat breakfast every single day. How cool is that?

**The Values of Radiant Recovery **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I suspect that many of of you may not think about what is behind our community. Who are we? What are we about? This is way more than responding to a collection of books. Radiant Recovery® is a community, grown by a group of volunteer liaisons under my leadership. We meet every week. We talk, we sort things out, we work to continue to foster and grow the vision of a highly functional, creative healing place. Some of us have been working together for more than five years. It only gets better and better.

Here are the values we operate with:

1) Commitment to the vision. We believe that the Radiant Recovery® program offers a life changing solution for the problem of sugar sensitivity and are willing to change our food, change our lives and share the vision with others.

2) Simplicity. We will provide solutions to sugar sensitivity that are easy to understand and implement.

3) Respect. We will recognize the individuality and unique differences of each person doing the program by reinforcing the unique, individually tailored aspect of the food plans.

4) Listening. We will acknowledge that the most powerful definition of our success comes from those using the services and products we offer.

5) Integrity. We deliver the promises we make. We say what we mean and we mean what we say.

6) Compassion. We encourage self-awareness and empowerment in our community members by providing information in a non-judgmental way and remembering our own journeys.

7) Empowerment. Rather than offering directions, we will provide tools that enable members to find the way out of chaos, feeling stuck and overwhelmed into a sense of clarity, focus and direction. We will work to teach rather than tell.

8) Modeling. Our leadership will commit to living our values, working the program and being fully accountable for the quality of their own recovery. We will walk our talk.

9) Responsibility. We will take responsibility for how we do business. We commit to being culturally and linguistically sensitive to the range of interests, concerns and backgrounds of our members.

This last weekend I went to a trade show put on by the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association. Five of our liaison team attended. They came to help, paid their own expenses, wore their sunflower Radiant Recovery® shirts and went around and talked to vendors, bookstore owners and buyers. I kept running into people who said *Oh, yes, one of your people was here*. No one could believe that this *staff* was there voluntarily because they care about the books and the message. The model we are creating is sort of outside the box.

At any rate, I am inviting you to participate and share in the development of this vision. If you have ideas and comments or thoughts or critique, email me. I will take your feedback, put it up on the web and we can all talk about it. get how this works, we can start making choices for healing.
