One of the real markers for your recovery is to begin to think about your food needs before you get into trouble.

**Testimonial of the Week **

So, Italy was lovely and totally a non-event food wise.

I brought browns with me (wild rice, oats, buckwheat cakes), and protein powder and cocoa powder, and nuts.

At the supermarket there I bought tuna, eggs, cheese, and vegetables.

For breakfast I stirred up protein powder and cocoa powder in a cup of water and had it with oatmeal on the side. It wasn't my favorite way of making shake, but it was good enough and my body was just as happy.

When on the road, I had with me a container of wild rice mixed with tuna. Made sure to drink plenty of water too.

When we ate out I had my brown before we left the villa, and then had my protein and greens at the restaurant. The last few days, I actually had some ravioli. I cut off the doughy edges and ate the thinner dough in the middle with the cheese and spinach filling. It was very good, but I was very *blah* about eating the white flour. My body is so healed it does not scream with delight from such things any more.

My family went wild for Italian ice cream and myriad desserts. I had none and craved none. I watched them licking their fingers and was happy for them, but did not care for any.

On the last day, I decided to have a tiny taste of panna cotta and tiramisu that my kids were devouring, just to have the experience of tasting it. I had a Thumbelina-size taste of each.......and it was soooo sweet. How do people eat it?

I laugh, because I was a *people* who could live on such things only three or so years ago. My family, who know me well, were amazed that I didn't touch the stuff the whole week we were there.

They thought I was making a huge effort.
It was no effort at all.
It was what my body chose.
It was the essence of being healed.

Chloe keeps saying, "Healing is grand" and it truly is!!

**Notes from the Forum **

Yes, thank you! It was lovely to read of the shame melting and how good you feel.

The thing that springs to mind right now is how my absolute driven single mindedness has softened into being quite useful.

For instance, if I had got a bee in my bonnet I literally would not rest until I had covered everything I could get my hands on. Getting an author from the library I liked, and that was it.... felt impelled to get everything else they had ever written and felt uneasy until that was achieved.

Well that came in handy finding a certain author, Dr. Kathleen DesMaisons. And though it was a bit exhausting reading everything I possibly could, breakfast and then step three calmed that 'driven' thing into something a lot calmer. All the things I have been 'driven' about have had a softer , useful side.

And I have since discovered that the tenacity that I used to apply so fruitlessly to diets on and off, in a healing mode is a real strength. And all that planning I used to do.... is just a base of knowledge as to what suits me (and what doesn't, LOL) and can be recalled effortlessly without all the angst and frustration that used to go with it.

And, yes, even the old habit of stockpiling certain things in the pantry is converted into either an early-warning sign (like when I had 14 packs of Ryvita in the cupboard and got worried about running out, LOL) or, how organised I am with my shopping and cupboard stocking so I am prepared for any eventuality.

Thanks, pleasure to be walking along with you! mosaic

**Radiant Ambassadors **

Have you always fancied having a go at Twitter but were too afraid to ask?

Perhaps you thought that it’s just for teens and what would I want to be doing there anyway?

Or perhaps you want to tip toe over there but aren’t sure about how to go about it?

Well, the ambassadors list might just be the place for you! There are some Twitter instructions in the files section if you want to come on over and have a look.

Twitter can be fun. It can also be a great way of talking about Radiant Recovery if that’s what you want to talk about. I talk about real life and Radiant Recovery too.

Why don’t you try it? You might like it!

**How I Found Radiant Recovery **

Hello, I'm Teresa from Tucson, Arizona. Suspecting that sugars, or in my case starchy carbs, were creating a lot a havoc in my life, I read The Sugar Addicts Total Recovery Program about 7 years ago. I saw myself and my family history clearly in KD's book.

Impulsively, I then dropped sugar immediately and had such severe withdrawal, like the worst hangover in my life, I remember thinking, "Is this pain what alcoholics or drug addicts go through?" Though I did modify my diet over time, like less sugar, gluten and dairy free, I see that my initial withdrawal shock for years afterward kept me from following through the suggested program to "total recovery."

Now I am reading Potatoes Not Prozac and I understand it now; go slower than slow, focus on one step, one meal and in my case, one craving at a time.

Today I have a lot more self-care tools and spiritual insight under my belt than I did 7 years ago, so I am ready to have another go at it. I feel group support will be a golden opportunity for me to anchor into the recovery steps safely and sanely. I am hopeful that we will all be elevated harmonically through our group efforts.

Peace and grins to you all, Teresa

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

We are excited to announce two new products. Our Nordic Naturals Sales Rep sent over some samples for Kathleen to try.

The first was something call Nordic Probiotic. She tried it and reported back that it is fabulous. Here is her quote:

This is an incredible find for anyone with a unpredictable gut. I have not thought of myself as having GI problems, but I was floored with the positive impact of taking this product. I can well imagine for those of you who struggle with digestive stability these would be fabulous.
We also ordered some Algae Omega. I know that some of you would prefer a vegetarian/vegan source of omega 3 fatty acids. Let's give this one a try. See what you think and let me know.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

**Our Online Groups **

The radiantrecovery list was set up as a support for people who are in recovery for alcohol and/or drugs and would like to add the Radiant Recovery nutritional piece to their healing. Our approach to recovery encourages the use of 12-step programs and Radiant Recovery. I have heard from a lot of people who have many years of sobriety in AA but have just recently come across Radiant Recovery. Won't you come and join us over on the recovery list to learn how to integrate sobriety and doing the food steps? If you want the promises to come in a way you have not imagined, it is a great time to come over. And if you aren't sure, but think alcohol might be a problem for you, we are here to support that exploration as well. The folks on the list are warm, compassionate, caring and straightforward. So we would love to have you come join us.

**What is Radiant Ranch Anyway **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

This week, I am going to write about Radiant Ranch since we have just finished. I have had some folks ask me what it is. Is it a seminar or a conference or what? I thought it might be helpful to give you some context.

Originally, I started ranch so I would have a reason to go up to Ghost Ranch once a year. That location is one of my most favorite places in the world. It is where Georgia O'Keefe lived and painted for the last years of her life. However, as we grew, they were less and less willing to work with us about the food, so we made the decision to find a place here in Albuquerque. This made *ranch* more accessible in many ways.

So ranch grows and evolves. Each year is the same and yet different. I always use it as a time to offer new ideas and thoughts on healing sugar sensitivity. The agenda evolves out of what has been happening in the community over the year, and the interests of the people who are attending. I think of it as the heartbeat of our community. Yes, we present *stuff*, but really, it is the coming together and *creating* that makes it what it is.

This is what one of the community members who attended this year shared about her experience:

Three opportunities to go to Ranch passed me by because I wasn't sure if I'd even still be doing the program by the time Ranch rolled around! But finally, after many trials and tribulations with Radiant Recovery, I learned that it truly worked for me. So this past May I took the plunge and went to Ranch for the first time and absolutely LOVED it. It truly was the best decision I could have made.

I can't tell you how cool it was to be in a room full of people just like me, and hearing Kathleen speak was just wonderful. The food was great - on program and always on time - and I left Albuquerque feeling better than I ever have. It was great for my program and really strengthened my commitment. I also made some great life-long friends who I can call up or email for support. Also, the lists have "come alive" for me because I met so many people at Ranch. It's really helped my participation in the lists.

Here's my two cents IF you think you want to go to Ranch. Start saving on your own now (and by the way, it really is a bargain), and tell your hubby you are taking a personal retreat, which is led by this amazing woman who wrote these amazing books that you feel are life changing. :)

You can invite your husband to come along, but I would suggest you try to go by yourself. I love my husband a lot and he's a good sport about my program, but I think it was important for me to do this on my own. I know I connected more with people than I would have if he would have come along.

I should let you know that my husband was very skeptical about all this because I've been on so many diets and tried so many things. Not to mention the fact that I've spent hundreds of dollars on everything under the sun. But now that I've been following this program for a while, he has noticed that our relationship is 100x better, and our life is a lot nicer with me doing this program. He knows I can now get on a plane without being doped up on Xanax, and how much less anxious I am about everything. I told him that Ranch was awesome, and that I planned to go to many more. And he said, "cool!" So there you go.

I would love to meet you! Give it some serious thought over the next couple of months. Oh, I am not trying to twist your arm or anything LOLOLOLOL!!

Brenda wrote this after the 2004 Ranch. I get letters like this every year. It deepens and gets richer time and time again. This year was no different……although we had the joy of having a husband come along with the girls. They had a blast touring Albuquerque while we did the seminar. We all had a great time!

Thanks for reading! If you know someone who could benefit from this, feel free to forward it to them.
