Hi {!firstname_fix}

Well, we started the new journal skilled class rather innocently and were stunned to discover how technology can serve us with journaling. The whole class is rocking and my brain is working on double speed to stay ahead of the creativity of the participants. I really feel as if we have stumbled into a tool that will come to serve all of us in the community. You will be hearing more as we go.

I am holding off on starting a step one class to allow more people to get there.

Today I spent an incredible morning. Went to the farmers’ market. It was mostly craft people and there were just the most interesting things. One woman had jewelry made from tiny seeds. It was just exquisite. She is young, has been doing it for a year and has a whole range of things like earrings and necklaces. Talk about creative entrepreneurship!

There was a stall for gluten-free breads, a stall for dog treats with the dog there to help, and many stalls for organic garden foods. I walked around for a couple of hours listening to the music and watching the children and dogs run through the middle part. As I drove home, I was enjoying the trees being bright yellow. We don’t get the mix that New England does, but my, is the yellow against the blue sky bright!

This class will begin Wednesday, October 29, 2014. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Step 1 (2 weeks) - is our foundation class to get you started. Learn all four parts of step 1 in a structured way. Learn how to progress through them with enjoyment. Let us support getting your program off to a fabulous start.
The class schedule will be online soon. I got caught off guard with the journaling class taking so much time. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

**Testimonial of the Week **

This is how it worked where the Appleton video took place. I am going to send a copy of Little Sugar Addicts and the video to my school board. Also, as a teacher, I do the best I can in my own classroom. The other teachers in my school pretty much know what I do and how I feel about sugar etc...but if they are in denial as to their own problems with sweets, they don't really want to hear it. I do this one person at a time. My teaching partner is very supportive of this and does the same thing I do.

This year, I am going to go one step further...not just promoting ONLY healthy snacks, I am going to try to insist that EVERYONE bring a snack every day with protein in it. I can do whatever I can in the classroom, but if the district is still giving the kids less than quality food, then we have a lot more to do. I will try with my parents too, but that is also difficult since most don't even speak English...but I'll do the best I can.

The kids are one of the best methods of getting to them...and I tell them how I feel about the stuff and what they are and aren't allowed to eat in my classroom. Since kindergartners still like/love their teacher, it seems to be helpful!!! I have had parents tell me I have brainwashed their children (in a good way). It's very cool watching a 5 year old tell their parent that a lollipop isn't a healthy snack.

So...I guess where I'm going with this....you can do whatever you can, one teacher at a time...one parent at a time, one child at a time. You have already planted seeds.

Elaine

**Notes from the Forum **

Hello and welcome

I really understand the desire to just jump in there and do it all right now. But as you have already discovered, that really doesn't work - it's very hard to sustain. (Plus, addicts love drama, and quitting sugar cold turkey is definitely drama, putting your body and biochemistry through a major shock.) If you do the steps the way they are written in the book, slowly, and one piece at a time, the changes are sustainable and steady, so even though it seems like it takes longer, it really doesn't because you are less apt to relapse.

The good thing is, you will notice major improvement well before step 6, so you don't have to wait until detox to begin feeling better physically and feeling more sane. So, I hope you will consider just starting with step 1, breakfast with protein.

It has 4 parts:

enough protein for your body
a complex carb
within an hour of getting up
every day

I noticed a big change just from this step. What do you think you would like to eat for breakfast?

Allison

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

I thought you would love this story. My great, great grandfather, Joseph Burnett, was a chemist and the first to bring vanilla extract into the country from France. Burnett's vanilla was considered the finest there was. Here is an antique box that we recently discovered in an antique store in Arizona. I think it is really fun to think that a 100 years later, I am here peddling extracts and flavorings to you.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

**Radiant YLD **

We had a most interesting discussion last week about the role of chats in our recovery. We have shifted from thinking about chat as simply a *conversation* to a unique opportunity for a real-time Master’s interaction. Members were talking about what it means to them that they are able to work with me directly. Over time, the interaction has a pretty significant cumulative effect in making sense of the program. It was an amazing discussion and I think it clarified a lot for me. Like, what are we really doing here? At any rate, it is a nice opportunity.

Don’t forget that the lifetime memberships for both YLD and Living will be changing on Nov 1 to annual memberships, so if you want the lifetime option, now is the time to grab it.

**Our Online Groups **

The Radiant Depression group is all about support for the person who is depressed and trying to work Kathleen's 7 step program of recovery from sugar addiction. Many of us have struggled with severe depression for years without any hope of finding an end to it. But through doing the food we have found that hope returning and have found light where before there was only darkness.

Some of us are taking anti-depressants while doing the food, so we talk about how the two are compatible and we also share about getting through the tough spots together, with support from each other. If you are feeling depressed please come join us. There is hope.

**Converting Scary Stuff to Fun **
Angella

I was thinking recently about how fun Halloween has become for our family. Talk about a holiday transformed :-) I thought I'd list some of my favorite things.
  • Making orange and black paper chains with my kids and stringing them around the house (this has become a Halloween tradition for us).

  • Decorating the house with Halloween crafts like bats, spiders and webs, pictures of pumpkins, whatever we make together.

  • Looking for silly, yummy and spooky snacks that I can make for our Halloween party and also just for my kids as Halloween treats.

  • Planning Halloween costumes, this year we decided to make them homemade!

  • Having friends over for a Halloween party and playing LOTS of games together.

  • Watching all the kids gobble up all the healthy whole-grain sugar-free Halloween snacks :-)

  • Finding fun things to give to kids as treats instead of candy, like glow sticks or temporary tattoos that turn your hand into an animal face.

  • A nourishing, warm dinner for my family, that has been simmering all day in the slow cooker, eaten right before we head out trick or treating.

  • My kids looking forward to going trick or treating and it's not because of the candy.

  • Being goofy and fun about our money-for-candy exchange after trick or treating.

  • My excited and giggly kids as we head out on our evening shopping trip, right after the exchange, still in our costumes.

  • Tucking in my tired but level-headed, stable and content kids after an exciting Halloween day.

  • The satisfaction of not having Halloween candy in the house after Halloween, causing days or weeks of meltdowns (on my part too!)

  • The fact that I don't buy Halloween candy early anymore then eat it all, and need to buy more before Halloween.

  • The fact that I don't sneak candy from my kids trick or treating hoard anymore.

  • That I don't see Halloween as the beginning of a dangerous slide into feeling totally out of control with all the sugar of the upcoming holidays.

  • That I have learned how to have fun with my family during Halloween, because I can focus on something other than the sugar.

  • Teaching my kids that the essence of radiance is this joy we have together when playing and living into a life of recovery.
